'Fastest Van' At the Nurburgring: Ford Stock (NYSE:F) Slips Despite Outlandish Win

'Fastest Van' At the Nurburgring: Ford Stock (NYSE:F) Slips Despite Outlandish Win

Business Insider14 hours ago
Give legacy automaker Ford (F) credit: it is taking the credo of 'no boring cars' so seriously that it is almost frightening. In fact, Ford managed to make a Transit SuperVan surprisingly, well, surprising by putting it to the test on the Nurburgring track. It came away from that storied proving ground with a new record: the fastest van to ever see the track. Yet despite this, Ford stock slipped fractionally in Monday afternoon's trading.

It was considered iconic when the Ford Transit van, driven by Sabine Schmitz on an episode of Top Gear, managed to post a lap time of 10:12. But recently, Romain Dumas took a similar run in Ford's electric vehicle (EV) demonstrator version of the SuperVan and pared over three minutes off Schmitz's time. The SuperVan came in at 6:48.42, which—and brace yourself for this—puts it between Chevrolet's (GM) Corvette ZR1X and a late-model representative from the Mercedes-AMG (MBGAF) GT Black Series.
Admittedly, there were key differences that helped; the SuperVan made its run on slick tires, and was built as a 'purpose-built racing vehicle.' This forces observers to take the result with something of a grain of salt, even if the lap is still downright impressive by any standard for something that looks like, well, a van.
Consider the 2025 Explorer
With the end of the model year approaching, some car buyers are, perhaps, starting to wonder if they should buy a new car now or wait for the next model year to show up. And for the Ford Explorer—one of Ford's biggest names in SUV—that model year issue is particularly telling.
The 2026 Explorer, reports note, will actually be less expensive than the 2025 model. Several new Explorers will be part of the lineup, including the Explorer Active at $38,330, the Platinum at $50,830, and the Tremor, taking over for the Timberline, that costs $48,330. But the 2025 models are often seeing price cuts, reports note, part of a clear-the-lot strategy. And in some cases, the 2025s may have better feature sets, which means a 2025 could prove a better value than its 2026 equivalent.

Judge Rules that Tesla (TSLA) Will Face Class Action Lawsuit over FSD Package

A U.S. judge has ruled that EV maker Tesla (TSLA) will face a class action lawsuit in California from drivers who say that Elon Musk misled them for years about the self-driving abilities of Tesla's vehicles. Indeed, the case centers on the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package, with claims that Tesla didn't have the sensors needed for full autonomy and never successfully showed a vehicle completing a long-distance autonomous drive. Because these are issues that affected many customers in the same way, the judge decided the case could move forward as a group lawsuit. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. Judge Rita Lin explained that many buyers likely saw Tesla's marketing between October 2016 and August 2024, which included the 'Autopilot' section of its website, blog posts, earnings calls, and Elon Musk's 2016 press conference. She noted that while most automakers rely on dealers and wide-scale ads, Tesla's direct-to-consumer model made it more likely that potential buyers visited its site and were influenced by those claims. Tesla argued that not everyone saw the statements or found them important, but the judge said Tesla's unique marketing made this case different from most. Interestingly, the certified class includes people who bought the FSD package during specific timeframes and chose not to be bound by Tesla's arbitration agreement. However, the judge excluded buyers of the Enhanced Autopilot package after saying that it didn't promise full self-driving capabilities, so Tesla's alleged misstatements wouldn't have affected their decisions. The case, officially titled In re Tesla Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Litigation, comes as regulators continue to investigate whether Tesla's self-driving tech is safe, especially since it's a key part of the company's future robotaxi plans. What Is the Prediction for Tesla Stock? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on TSLA stock based on 14 Buys, 15 Holds, and eight Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average TSLA price target of $307.23 per share implies 7.7% downside risk.

Snowflake Stock (SNOW) Melts as Rival Databricks Hits $100B Valuation

It was revealed that Databricks is getting close to sealing a new funding round which will value it at $100 billion. That would be over 60% higher than its last round in December. New Funding Databricks did not reveal how much money it is raising, but back in December it hit the $10 billion mark in that funding round. The company was then valued at $62 billion. With the new cash, Databricks is looking to ramp up its AI strategy, expand its suite of AI agents and invest in its new database. It may also look at making more acquisitions in the AI space. 'We're seeing tremendous investor interest because of the momentum behind our AI products, which power the world's largest businesses and AI services,' said Databricks Chief Executive Ali Ghodsi. 'We're thrilled this round is already oversubscribed and to partner with strategic, long-term investors who share our vision for the future of AI.' Databricks recently said it generated $3.7 billion in annualized revenue in July, a growth rate of 50%. The company, which has partnerships with tech giants such as Alphabet (GOOGL) -owned Google and Amazon (AMZN) is expected to IPO at some stage in the future. It could even happen before the end of this year. Databricks had $2.6 billion in revenue in its fiscal year that ended in January, with a net retention rate over 140%. In the first quarter of the new fiscal year, nearly 50 of Databricks' 15,000-plus customers are spending over $10 million annually. Snow Joke Both Databricks and Snowflake sell data analytics and data-management software that runs on cloud-computing platforms. Snowflake has a market cap of $66 billion, so the challenge from a stronger Databricks is obvious. But the opportunity for both firms in an expanding AI field is just as clear. Snowflake's share price has climbed over 28% in the year-to-date and over 50% in the last 12 months – see below. The company also reported a strong start to the year with Q1 product revenue reaching $997 million, a 26% year-over-year increase. Snowflake also added 451 net new customers in Q1, growing 19% year-over-year. What are the Best AI Stocks to Buy Now?

Ford's $30,000 EV Truck Could Save Americans Thousands in Maintenance. And They Need To Know it

Ford Motor Company is betting quite a lot on its new "Universal EV Platform,' which will spawn a $30,000 electric pickup in 2027 . It certainly said the right things last week: The truck will have a competitive price, ample performance, and unmatched utility in a versatile package. This new vehicle is a bold promise that combines emerging technologies and new-to-Ford manufacturing processes. However, it could all be for nothing if Ford doesn't get the marketing right. The Blue Oval has to highlight one thing dealers might not like: Maintenance intervals. For as much as many of us love cars and enjoy the art, science, and frustration of working on them, most owners couldn't care less. I enjoy changing my car's oil on a quiet Saturday morning, and I'm sure there were plenty of people who found pleasure in cleaning the stables before the horseless carriage upended their careers. For most people, maintaining a vehicle is one of the last things they want to do. Negligence is common among owners, but it's also more expensive to maintain and fix vehicles than ever before, with costs spiking 43 percent post-pandemic, according to one study . This should be a wake-up call and an opportunity for automakers—Ford especially. Photo by: Ford Not only do new car prices continue to rise, but the cost of ownership is also increasing. Oil changes, repairs, and maintenance costs are things no one likes to think about, but they should be front and center in the EV conversation. In ditching the internal-combustion engine, electric cars provide benefits that could lead to a better, cheaper ownership experience, and automakers need to let their customers know. EVs face their own set of growing pains, which automakers continue to struggle with. But these issues are mostly related to software and production quality. Those are things that, once solved, should make owning an electric vehicle more appealing to average consumers. Just look at the Mach-E and F-150 Lighting. Yes, Ford recommends service every 10,000 miles, but it's for the most basic stuff. Techs inspect the brakes, steering linkage, and cooling system, rotate the tires, and check the wheels for any abnormalities. At 40,000 miles (and every 20,000 thereafter), Ford recommends replacing the cabin air filter and performing the 10,000-mile service. The first major maintenance interval for either of Ford's EVs is at 200,000 miles, and even then, there's not much to do. Photo by: Ford Many owners may not bring in their EV for its first major service for over a decade after purchase.. That's quite different compared to visiting the dealership in the first three to six months of ownership for an oil change. And something Ford should truly highlight as it pins its hopes on its new EV platform. The only big hardware concern with EVs is battery longevity, but a study from earlier this year found that degradation is almost a non-issue, with cars retaining 90 percent of their battery capacity after 90,000 miles. It's another thing that the average driver might not notice until years after purchasing a car, and automakers could design vehicles to make it easy and cheap to replace old batteries, minimizing frustration and likely keeping the customer in a bubble of profitable subscription services. But none of it matters if these vehicles don't roll off the line fully cooked. Ford is positioning its new line of EVs as affordable models, which is what consumers are clamoring for. And being affordable means more than just an attractive MSRP. If cheap EVs can lower the total cost of vehicle ownership for people and save them a few bucks in their day-to-day commute, that frees up more of their money to spend on that Mustang or Bronco they have always wanted. It's not as if we'll consume less, but rather the opposite. That gives consumers more choice on how to spend their money, and more opportunities for Ford and others.
