Egypt welcomes ILO resolution granting observer status to Palestine

CAIRO – June 7, 2025: Egypt's Ministry of Labor has welcomed the decision by the General Conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO) to grant the State of Palestine observer status within the organization.
The resolution was overwhelmingly adopted, with 386 votes in favor, 15 against, and 42 abstentions, marking a significant step forward for Palestinian representation in international labor affairs.
Egyptian Minister of Labor Mohammad Jubran extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Palestinian delegation—comprising representatives of the government, employers, and workers—on this historic milestone. He praised the ILO's decision to grant Palestine "non-member observer state" status, describing it as a just and overdue recognition.
The resolution was adopted during a plenary session on Friday, June 6, as part of the 113th Session of the International Labor Conference, held in Geneva from June 2 to 13, 2025.
Minister Jubran delivered Egypt's official statement in support of the resolution during the plenary session on Thursday at the United Nations Palace. In his remarks, he welcomed the adoption of what he described as a 'historic resolution,' noting its alignment with the United Nations General Assembly resolution of May 10, 2024. That resolution affirmed Palestine's eligibility for full UN membership under Article 4 of the UN Charter and called for its admission to the United Nations and its specialized agencies.
The ILO's 352nd Governing Body session subsequently adopted a resolution to amend Palestine's status, enabling its delegation to participate more fully in the organization's meetings and activities.
Minister Jubran stated: 'This resolution embodies a historical truth and a recognition of the rights of a people who have suffered for more than seven decades under foreign occupation, blockade, oppression, and the killing of women and children.

European parliament member Rima Hassan, who is on board the vessel, urged governments to "guarantee safe passage for the Freedom Flotilla." The Palestinian territory has been under an Israeli naval blockade since 2007, long before the outbreak of Israel's devastating war on Gaza in October 2023. The blockade, coupled with repeated military incursions over the years, has devastated Gaza's infrastructure and economy, exacerbating poverty and limiting access to basic services like healthcare and clean water. In 2010, Israeli commandos killed 10 civilians during a raid on the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara, part of a similar aid flotilla attempting to break the blockade. Egypt is ready to support counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel region, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar, during a phone call on Saturday. The two ministers discussed developments across Africa and the need to deepen cooperation within the African Union (AU) to promote peace and security, particularly in the increasingly volatile Sahel.
