
Nissan's Mid-Engined Hot Hatch Is Back. And It's Even Cooler Now
A new
electric Nissan Micra
is coming in 2026, which should have fans of the famed hatchback at least excited to see the nameplate return. But before it does, Nissan wants to celebrate the third-generation Micra's 23rd birthday with a special reinvention of its one-off Micra 350SR.
The original Micra 350SR was built by RML Group, the same racing team responsible for Nissan's 1990s British Touring Car success. Based on a standard 2002 Micra K12, the 350SR had a 3.5-liter V-6 engine from the Murano shoved behind the front seats, complete with headers from a
350Z
and high-lift cams from Nismo. All told, it made 300 horsepower.

Twenty-five years later, Nissan is giving that 350SR the restomod treatment. Although it doesn't stray far from the original design, the updated Micra 350SR features new rounded LED headlights that pay homage to the upcoming Micra EV, a silver-and-blue livery with Nissan's '=III 23' iconography, and refreshed 18-inch RAYS wheels.
The cabin goes mostly untouched, apart from a few light updates. The 350R's interior boasts modern seats and harnesses, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and speakers for blasting your favorite tunes—so long as you're not drowning out the sound of that V-6.
The powertrain, thankfully, appears untouched. It's the same 3.5-liter V-6 from the Murano used in the original version, still making an estimated 300 horsepower. For a car that weighs just 2,646 pounds, that's plenty.
The updated Micra 350SR debuts to the general public today at the 2025 SMMT Test Day at Millbrook Proving Ground in the UK—the very same track Nissan used to develop the car more than 20 years ago.

Nissan Ends Production of U.S.'s Most Affordable New Car Over Tariffs, Low Sales
A new report states that Nissan has axed its five-speed manual transmission-equipped Versa-a model the automaker has sold since 2006. A 2025 Nissan Versa starts at $17,190 for the manual base S trim, and a combination of tariff impacts and difficulty keeping the car profitable led to its downfall, according to an Automotive News report. Nissan has since confirmed the end of the model, which is 2025's most affordable new vehicle, but it will continue producing other Versa trims with better business performance. Fewer than 5% of the 42,589 Versas sold in 2024 had a five-speed manual configuration. The Versa is one of three vehicles that Nissan manufactures in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and sells in America alongside the automaker's Sentra and Kicks. Combined, the three models represented nearly a third of Nissan's U.S. volume in 2024. The discontinued Nissan Versa was the last new five-speed manual-equipped car available on the U.S. market. "We remain committed to offering a line-up that answers the evolving needs of customers and maintains Nissan's competitive edge. We are focusing on the most popular Versa grades that deliver the strongest business performance and are in line with what customers are looking for from this type of sedan," Nissan said, according to Motor1. President Trump's 25% tariffs on auto imports from countries like Mexico would add around $4,500 to the affordable model's starting price, further lowering its appeal. After a $1,140 shipping charge, the 2025 five-speed manual Versa starts at $18,330, whereas its CVT counterpart is sold from $20,130. A top-spec Nissan Versa SR starts at $21,190, not including its delivery fee. While the base Versa falls short in areas like power, its fuel efficiency, large cargo space, and solid amount of standard features helped enhance its value. A base manual Versa has 15-inch wheels with hubcaps, cloth seat trim, 30 combined MPG, and 122 horsepower via a 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine. You'll get a 7-inch infotainment display and automatic emergency pedestrian braking, but manual Versas don't come with the higher trims' 7-inch LCD instrument cluster. The FWD manual Versa became the U.S.'s most affordable new car after Mitsubishi retired its subcompact Mirage after the 2024 production year. The 2024 Mirage started at about $16,695 for the ES hatchback, whereas the Mirage G4 sedan was priced from $17,795. Drivers will now have to spend over $30,000 in most cases to get a new vehicle with a manual transmission. The Ford Bronco and Mustang, the Honda Civic Si, Type R, and Elantra N, the Jeep Wrangler, the Mazda Miata and 3, the Toyota GR Corolla, and others remain the few new manual cars on the market. While it's unfortunate to see the U.S.'s last new sub-$20,000 car disappear, the move won't significantly impact drivers given the manual Versa's low sales volume. Nissan also told Autoblog that it's "considering all possibilities to recover its business performance," so axing a low-demand, tariff-impacted model seems to be the right decision amid the company's recent financial troubles. Nissan to raise JPY 1 trillion (US$7bn) to pay debt
Nissan Motor Company is looking to raise up to JPY 1 trillion (US$ 7 bn) this year from the issuance of new corporate bonds and by selling assets, as it faces massive bond redemptions and restructuring costs, according to local reports citing a company source. The struggling Japanese automaker is understood to be facing bond redemptions worth around JPY 780 billion in the current fiscal year (FY2025), ending on 31st March 2026. The company is also facing substantial restructuring costs, after it announced plans to reduce its number of global vehicle production plants from 17 to 10 by FY2027, cutting around 20,000 jobs. As well as issuing new convertible bonds worth JPY 630 billion, Nissan is also looking to sell non-core assets including shares in affiliated companies and real estate assets. This includes selling and leasing back its head office building in Yokohama and selling properties in the US. The automaker also plans to sell part of its 15% stake in its Alliance partner Renault and its entire shareholding in battery manufacturer AESC Group this year. Separate reports suggested Nissan is looking to secure a GBP 1 bn loan guaranteed by UK Export Finance, a British government-linked institution, to help safeguard its UK manufacturing operations. Among the expected plant closures are facilities in Japan, Mexico, and South Africa. Nissan is understood to be aiming to raise a large proportion of the funds in the next few months. Nissan's global sales fall by 7% in April
Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Company reported a 7.2% year-on-year fall in global sales to 225,729 vehicles in April 2025, including Nissan and Infiniti branded models, with domestic and overseas volumes both weaker. Sales in Japan plunged by 19% to 24,348 units last month while overseas deliveries dropped by 7.2% to 201,381 units. In the first four months of 2025, global sales fell by 5.9% to 1,095,513 units from 1,163,646 in the same period last year, with sales in Japan dropping by over 11% to 157,649 units while overseas sales declined by almost 5% to 937,864 units. China was the worst-performing major overseas market year-to-date, with sales plunging by over 25% to 167,630 units, while sales in Europe fell by 4.9% to 132,822 units. Deliveries in North America rose by 3.3% to 465,569 units, including a 3.5% rise in US sales to 339,629 units, a 5.7% rise in sales in Mexico to 84,917 units, and an 8.1% rise in sales in Canada to 40,440 units. Sales in other markets combined fell by 4.4% to 171,843 units. In terms of production, global volumes dropped by 12.5% to 956,327 in the first four months of 2025, with output in Japan falling by over 11% to 201,902 units while overseas volumes dropped by 13% to 754,425 units – driven lower by a 26% plunge in Chinese output to 162,908 units and a 14% decline in UK output to 92,044 units, while production in Mexico rose by just 1% to 221,481 units. Exports from Japan fell by 14.4% to 113,220 units year-to-date, with shipments to North America plunging by 26.5% to 48,562 units while exports to Europe plunged by 31% to 12,048 units.
