In a significant announcement that will have far reaching consequences for the future of the armed forces and defence of the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new mission that will identify and induct future weapons over the next decade to provide a comprehensive national security shield Naming it the Sudarshan Chakra Mission , the PM said the entire system will be developed and manufactured in India and will also include precision strike elements , besides ensuring the security of both strategic and civilian establishments like hospitals, railway networks and centres of faith."Whatever technology comes to attack us, our technology should prove to be better than that and hence, in the coming 10 years, till 2035, I want to expand this national security shield, strengthen it, modernise it and hence, taking inspiration from Lord Shri Krishna, we have chosen the path of the Sudarshan Chakra," the PM said from the ramparts of Red Fort.The PM also made a strong case for self-reliance in the defence sector , pointing out that India was able to carry out Operation Sindoor due to home grown weapons and did not have to go out to the world for arms to prepare for the strike. Significantly, the PM announced a strong determination to develop an indigenous fighter jet engine , which is the basic element for developing future fighter jets.The PM shared that some basic elements of the Sudarshan Chakra mission have already been decided and the project will be taken up with great intensity over the next decade.The PM added that the system will be designed keeping in mind the changing nature of warfare and that it would also have the capability of conducting targeted precision action if required. While further details are yet to be shared, the comprehensive system is likely to include different elements of modern warfare, including cyber defence and offence, space-based assets, close range and long range anti drone systems, offensive drone capabilities and integration of a tri service missile force.

The India-US negotiations for a trade deal, which began in February after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the United States, have come to a halt, and the US negotiators' scheduled visit to India later this month stands cancelled, a source aware of the development told The Indian Express. The breakdown in trade talks assumes significance as US President Donald Trump has announced 50 per cent tariff on Indian products, the highest on any country globally. While 25 per cent tariff has already come into effect, government officials have said the levy of another 25 per cent – for Russia oil trade — could depend on 'how geopolitical events unfold'. The Indian Express had first reported on August 8 that the negotiations for a trade agreement had hit a pause, and the arrival of the US trade team was uncertain, as no formal communication had been received from their side. The deal has been stuck over India's long-standing stance of protecting farmers in every trade agreement. The US, under Trump, is prioritising market access for its agricultural products. In his Independence Day speech on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that India would not compromise on the well-being of its farmers, fisherfolk and cattle keepers, amid the standoff with the US over access for American products in India's agriculture and dairy market. On August 7, too, after Trump announced the additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, Modi had said that he would not compromise 'even if it entailed paying a very heavy personal price'. The geopolitical factor The uncertainty over when the tariffs on India could ease may drag on, as Trump's high-stakes talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin did not result in a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire. However, Trump said he and Putin had made progress during the meeting in Alaska. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that the secondary tariffs on India could increase if 'things don't go well' during the Trump-Putin talks. 'I think everyone has been frustrated with President Putin. We expected that he would come to the table in a more fulsome way. It looks like he may be ready to negotiate. And we put secondary tariffs on the Indians for buying Russian oil. I could see, if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up,' Bessent said in an interview with Bloomberg earlier.

Mithila ‘bhajan' at Atal event wows PM
Patna: A soulful Mithila bhajan rendered by two young girls from Bihar imbued a spiritual ambience at the 'Sadaiv Atal' memorial in Delhi on Saturday where President Droupadi Murmu, PM Narendra Modi and other dignitaries paid emotional tributes to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary. The performance by Samridhi Pathak and Sanvi Pathak so moved the PM that he met them after the programme to personally commend their talent and encourage them. President Murmu also warmly applauded the duo for their rendition. West Delhi MP and folk singer Manoj Tiwari, Madhubani MP Dr Ashok Kumar Yadav, and JD(U) national executive president Sanjay Kumar Jha shared videos of the performance on their social media accounts. Jha noted that the Maithili Vandana, "Jai-jai Bhairavi Asura Bhayauni…", composed by the eminent poet Vidyapati, had left a deep impression on those attending the solemn gathering. The devotional piece, known as Gosauni, is part of Mithilanchal's rich cultural heritage and is traditionally sung in praise of Goddess Durga. Delhi's infra boost: PM Modi to inaugurate Dwarka Expressway, UER-II; Rs 11,000 crore project to decongest Capital
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate two major National Highway projects in Delhi on Sunday, with a combined value of nearly Rs 11,000 crore. The inauguration marks a significant step in government's broader plan to ease congestion in the capital and improve connectivity across the region. The projects: the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), are expected to greatly cut travel time, decongest arterial routes, and provide smoother links between Delhi and its neighbouring cities. The 10.1 km Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway has been built at a cost of around Rs 5,360 crore. It will not only help traffic movement but also provide multi-modal connectivity to Yashobhoomi, the DMRC Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and the Dwarka cluster bus depot. Alongside this, the Alipur to Dichaon Kalan stretch of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), including new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, has been developed at a cost of Rs 5,580 crore. This new corridor will ease pressure on Delhi's Inner and Outer Ring Roads, as well as busy intersections such as Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-09. The Dwarka Expressway, fully operational, has been built in four packages at a cost of around Rs 9,000 crore. Its Haryana section was inaugurated by Modi in March 2024, just before the Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, the UER-II was executed in five packages with a total cost of Rs 7,716 crore. As per the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the UER-II begins at Alipur on NH-44 and connects with NH-9 and NH-48 in Delhi. Of the 76 km stretch, 54.2 km lies in Delhi while the remaining 21.5 km falls in Haryana. Conceived under the Delhi Master Plan 2021, it will also link the proposed IICC in Dwarka via the Dwarka Expressway, as per a TNN report.
