Crack down on vigilante groups behind mob trials and violence, asks CBCI president Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath

The Hindua day ago
President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) and Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath has called for strict action against extremist groups engaging in mob trials and violence, citing the recent arrest of two Catholic nuns in Chhattisgarh as a disturbing example of growing religious intolerance.
In a statement to the media in Thrissur on Saturday (August 2, 2025) following the release of the nuns on bail, the Archbishop urged authorities to quash the fabricated case under which the nuns were arrested and ensure such incidents are not repeated in the future.
'These were innocent sisters arrested on false allegations of human trafficking and religious conversion even though they were only accompanying three adult Christian women to their workplace in Agra with parental consent. This is not only unlawful but a blatant violation of religious freedom,' the Archbishop said.
He further demanded swift and strong action against extremist outfits that operate outside the law, conducting mob interrogations and attacks in the name of moral or religious policing. 'What we saw in Chhattisgarh was not an isolated incident. For the past several years, attacks against Christians and minorities have been steadily rising in different parts of the country,' he said.
Emphasising the constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and minority rights, Archbishop Mar Thazhath called for systemic reforms to safeguard these protections. 'There must be clear mechanisms to prevent discriminatory practices against Christians and other minorities, particularly in States where such acts have become disturbingly frequent.'
He also thanked all individuals and groups across political and social spectrums who helped secure the release of the nuns, extending special gratitude to both the central and state governments for their support.

LinkedIn Indian-origin Mathura Sridharan was appointed as Ohio's 12th solicitor general. However, her feat garnered wrath online with trolls questioning why a 'non-US-origin' person was picked for the post. Soon after her appointment, Sridharan's LinkedIn went viral with critics questioning her credibility. All this prompted Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost to issue a clarification, slamming the troll for ignorance. Yost, who appointed Mathura for the post, said that she is wrongly being portrayed as a non-American. She is a United States citizen, married to a US citizen, and the child of naturalised US citizens,' he said. 'If her name or her complexion bothers you, the problem is not with her or her appointment,' Yost said in a statement. 'Mathura is brilliant… she won her argument at SCOTUS last year. Both the SGs she worked under (Flowers & Gaiser) recommended her. I told her when I originally hired her that I needed her to argue with me. She does… All the time! Excited to promote her. She will serve Ohio well,' he added. Trolls question her religious identity However, Yost's take on the matter was also met with trolling as people pointed out that she is not 'American-American', with some even questioning her religious identity. 'Is she a Christian? That's the biggest factor that concerns me. Based on the bindi on her forehead, I worry she is not,' one user wrote online. 'Another American job… given away to foreigners,' another wrote. 'She's Indian. They all have a loyalty first to other Indians. Horrible pick. Un-American. The GOP is pathetic,' a third user exclaimed. When it comes to Mathura's career, before joining the Ohio Solicitor's Office, Mathura clerked for Judge Steven J. Menashi of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Judge Deborah A. Batts of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. She holds a Juris Doctorate from the New York University School of Law, a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Can Soul Return In Another Body? Spooky Reincarnation Tales Of 2-Yr-Old US Boy, 4-Yr-Old Indian Girl

Last Updated: One case is of Shanti Devi, a woman born in 1926 who reportedly remembered her past life as Lugdi. When it comes to the idea of what lies ahead after death, many people still believe in reincarnation. Time and again, cases appear that convince a section of society that the human soul reincarnates in another body after death. Recently, two videos discussing claims about reincarnation have grabbed attention. One of the clips details the situation of a young Indian girl who reportedly fascinated even Mahatma Gandhi. The other is about a boy in the US. The clip in question details the story of Shanti Devi, a woman born in 1926. When she was four years old, Shanti began talking about her past life in Mathura, which was located 75 miles away. She told her parents that in her earlier life, she was called Lugdi and that she died shortly after giving birth to a son in October 1925. Her parents wrote to Lugdi's husband, Kedarnath, who confirmed what Shanti was saying. Her parents took Shanti to Mathura, where she led them and a team of researchers to her old house. SHe also recognized Lugdi's parents in a crowd. The case even caught the attention of Mahatma Gandhi. He asked a commission to look into the case. The commission found 'no rational explanation" for the matter. Shanti Devi's story was detailed in a 1994 book by Swedish author Sture Lonnerstrand. The book was translated into English in 1998. US Boy's Claim About Being Lou Gehrig In 2009, a boy named Christian said he was a baseball player called Lou Gehrig, who was nicknamed 'The Iron Horse.' His parents initially dismissed his statements. Later, Christian saw a photo of baseball icon Babe Ruth and claimed that he was 'mean" to him. Christian also identified Gehrig from a team photo and said this is what he used to look like. At that time, he was two years old and did not have exposure to baseball. His mother, Cathy Byrd, investigated the matter and found startling similarities, which she later detailed in a book titled The Boy Who Knew Too Much. Gehrig died in 1941 due to ALS. Christian remembered his demise in detail and also knew information that was not in public, like the names of Gehrig's parents. By the time he was five, Christian's memories about Gehrig began to fade. top videos View all The idea of reincarnation continues to fascinate many people. Cases like these are frequently cited by individuals who believe in the idea. While nothing can be proven about what lies ahead after death, these cases demonstrate that many people continue to see reincarnation as a factor for incidents which cannot be explained. tags : reincarnation us viral view comments Location : Delhi, India, India First Published: August 03, 2025, 10:00 IST News viral Can Soul Return In Another Body?
