NEW YORK (AP) — During the Liberty's lineup announcement Tuesday night, one name brought the Barclays Center crowd to its feet: Jonquel Jones. She held up a heart to the crowd. In the words of head coach Sandy Brondello — 'It's a happy day. JJ's back.' The Liberty star center officially returned to the court in New York's 98-84 win over the Fever on Tuesday night. Jones, last season's WNBA Finals MVP, was playing for the first time since June 19 with an ankle injury and scored a team-high 18 points. 'It felt great to be back out there,' Jones said after the game. 'Obviously, it's been a while since I've been on the court, but my teammates have held it down while I was out, and everybody was excited for me to be back in. And I was just as excited.' Jones, the Liberty's third-highest scorer, has averaged 12.1 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists this season, while shooting 43.8 percent from behind the arc. New York struggled in her absence, going 5-4 after starting out the season 9-0. They are undefeated with Jones on the court. It's been a touch-and-go season for Jones so far. Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Jonquel Jones scored 18 points in her return from an ankle injury, and the New York Liberty beat the Indiana Fever 98-84 on Tuesday night. Breanna Stewart and Leonie Fiebich each scored 17, Sabrina Ionescu had 13 points and nine assists, and Isabelle Harrison also had 13 points to help the Liberty (15-6) beat the Fever for the second straight time. New York beat Indiana 98-77 last Wednesday in their last game before the All-Star break. Kelsey Mitchell scored 29 points to lead the Fever (12-11), which again played without Caitlin Clark (groin injury). New York struggled in the first half with Ionescu and Stewart scoring three points and six points, respectively — an anomaly for the duo that averages 18 and 19 points per game. Ionescu was held scoreless in the second and third quarters, spending most of the third on the bench. The Fever led 46-42 at halftime, capitalizing on Liberty turnovers to grab the thin lead. They held on to that advantage for most of the third quarter, until Stewart made a 3-pointer and a layup to put the Liberty back on top in the final minutes of the quarter. Ionescu's return in the fourth helped solidify the momentum moving in New York's direction. Jacob deGrom strikes out 9 and helps the Rangers to a 6-2 win over the Athletics
Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jacob deGrom struck out nine and allowed a leadoff homer in six solid innings, and Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia homered as the Texas Rangers beat the Athletics 6-2 on Tuesday night. DeGrom (10-2) was making his first start since July 12. The All-Star right-hander opted not to pitch in the Midsummer Classic and settled down quickly after allowing a homer to Lawrence Butler at the start. DeGrom retired 10 straight A's at one point and allowed just three hits while throwing 86 pitches, 60 for strikes. Garcia's homer in the fourth inning tied it and Texas went ahead to stay in the sixth on Semien's 364-foot shot off the foul pole in left field that required replay review to be confirmed. Seager's 3-run shot highlighted a four-run seventh. The Rangers shortstop has reached base in 23 straight games. Sean Newcomb (2-5) took the loss for the Athletics. Starter J.T. Ginn yielded one run in five innings, allowing five hits with two strikeouts. Butler's homer was his 14th of the season for the A's, who have lost three straight.
