Flying taxis, screens, massage seats: Shangai auto show displays futuristic cars
Hundreds of carmakers and equipment supplies have filled the exhibition space since Wednesday, showcasing models packed with screens, massage seats and other add-ons -- not to mention flying taxis.
Facing fierce competition, Chinese car manufacturers are trying to attract hyperconnected consumers with screens up to 65 inches wide mounted in front of each passenger, in the doors, in the sun visors or even on the car bonnet.

Meanwhile, electronics giants Huawei and Xiaomi are targeting younger customers who already easily connect their cellphones to their cars.
European automakers are attempting to counter their Chinese rivals, with the first model from Volkswagen's China-focused brand AUDI -- deliberately styled in capital letters -- offering a screen occupying the entire dashboard.
When stationary, the screens can be used for watching videos or singing karaoke.

And on the road, advanced driving systems promise to get users from A to B without needing to touch the steering wheel except in an emergency.
"With the proliferation of intelligent driving, cars will no longer be viewed solely as transportation tools, but will truly become a 'second living space,'" consultancy firm McKinsey said in a 2025 report on Chinese auto consumer tastes.
Chinese consumers place more value on interior comfort compared to other markets, according to European carmakers.
Visitors at Auto Shanghai queued to sit in luxurious minivans with chrome radiator grilles and reclining rear seats.
Mercedes unveiled a prototype of its next-generation luxury electric minivan, the Vision V, hoping to seduce future executives with aluminum seats, wood and silk trim, and a cinema screen that folds out from the floor.

According to McKinsey, lifestyle-oriented features such as fridges, televisions and reclining seats are highly sought after in China, as are top-spec suspension and rear-wheel steering that enhance comfort while driving.
"As vehicle prices increase, so does consumer demand for these features, along with a growing willingness to pay extra" to have them, the consultancy said.
On Friday, Chinese carmaker Nio had passengers bounce around inside its vehicles to demonstrate the effectiveness of the suspension.
Others are turning to traditional techniques, with French equipment manufacturer Forvia offering a seat that kneads, pinches, and pricks its occupant.
The seat was "inspired by traditional Chinese and Thai massages", said innovation manager Zong Li at the company's booth, and is expected to be installed in a Chinese vehicle this year.
Elsewhere, a number of propeller-powered flying taxis towered over other vehicles.
The technology, known as electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL), is still at the prototype stage but eventually aims to ferry several people at a time.
The world's leading battery manufacturer, CATL, showed off its eVTOL concept, fresh from announcing an investment of "hundreds of millions of dollars" in Chinese startup AutoFlight.
Even traditional manufacturer Hongqi -- famous for supplying limousines to China's leader Xi Jinping -- presented its concept of a "flying car" for two passengers, claiming an unproven range of 200 kilometres (124 miles) ahead of tests scheduled this year.
In recent years, China has made strides in eVTOL technology, where it is in direct competition with US players while Europeans struggle to make their mark.
Automotive supplier Wanfeng announced last month that it would take over bankrupt German eVTOL manufacturer Volocopter, whose aircraft were originally slated for a small-scale rollout during the 2024 Paris Olympics but are still awaiting certification.

Nissan Motor Co. 's Oppama factory, opened in 1961, was once a crown jewel in Japan's postwar rise to manufacturing powerhouse. Today, it represents the dangers of being caught flatfooted in a rapidly changing industry. The factory, about 30 miles south of Tokyo, is set to shut by March 2028 - part of Nissan's wide-ranging restructuring after a slump in sales sparked its worst financial crisis since Renault SA rescued the carmaker from near bankruptcy a quarter century ago. Once synonymous with cutting-edge technology, Japan's legacy brands are struggling to adapt to changing consumer tastes, ceding market share to the likes of Tesla Inc. and a wave of Chinese upstarts led by BYD Co. That means whatever happens to Oppama - and the thousands of local residents that depend on it - will serve as a warning for Japanese manufacturers as intensifying competition sparks a painful period of consolidation that could pave the way for much-needed rejuvenation. It's also a new era for the Japanese economy, as a wave of bankruptcies among small and medium-sized firms across industries from transportation to technology challenges the idea of 'shushin koyo' - a job for life. Like any factory town, Nissan's ties run deep. It directly employs almost 10% of Oppama's 29,700 residents. Field trips to the plant are a rite of passage for local school children and the company revived its baseball team this year after a 16-year hiatus, though they lost in the semifinals to ultimate tournament winner Toshiba Corp. A victory would have provided a welcome distraction, said Yuji Fujita, the third-generation owner of a fresh produce store located in the shopping avenue that runs between Oppama's train station and the factory. He drew parallels with the shutdown of Nissan's Zama plant in 1995, which marked the first factory closure in Japan by any carmaker in the postwar period. "This is the worst case scenario," said Fujita, whose family has owned around two dozen Nissan cars over the years. "It's impossible to know what will happen to us now." His sentiment is echoed around town. It's not clear yet how many of the 2,400 people employed at Oppama will be transferred to a Nissan factory in Kyushu, about 600 miles to the southwest, or when they will start their new roles. "The priority now is to figure out what options will be offered to existing employees," said Keiichi Asakura, general secretary of the Nissan Motor Worker's Union. There's also uncertainty about what happens to the site that spans 1.7 million square metres (18 million square feet) - about half the size of Central Park. Speculation has swirled among residents that it could be turned into a vacation resort or a theme park, or even used by the private defense industry. Nikkei reported in early July, before the announcement that Oppama will close, that Nissan is in talks with Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. - better known as Foxconn - over the site. Nissan chief executive officer Ivan Espinosa has said he isn't considering contract manufacturing. And plans are complicated by the need to rewrite the town's civil laws to reflect a change in utilisation.

V.O.C. Port scales new heights in windmill blade handling
V.O.C. Port in Thoothukudi has recorded a notable growth in windmill blade handling. The port handled 343 windmill blades in July 2025, registering a 90.56% increase over July 2024, when 180 blades were handled. During this July, the port also facilitated handling of eight ships carrying windmill blades and accessories, registering a 100% growth over the corresponding period last year, which witnessed handling of four such ships. An official statement said to support windmill blade handling — predominantly at Berths 3, 5, and 6 — the port employed two crawler cranes and three harbour mobile cranes. Facilitating the growing windmill blade handling, the port had established a dedicated storage facility of about 1,00,000 square metres within the Customs-notified area, along with an exclusive gate for their movement. This infrastructure ensured seamless operations and secure accommodation of the oversized cargo. The port's infrastructure further supported efficient handling through well-planned and congestion-free roads that allowed timely arrival of windmill blades at the port from the manufacturing units. In addition, the availability of skilled workforce ensured safe and smooth loading of blades and accessories. These components, manufactured in Bengaluru, Tiruchi and Chennai, were primarily exported to global destinations, including the United States, Turkey, Australia, Spain, Finland and other European countries. V.O.C. Port Chairman Susanta Kumar Purohit emphasised that this achievement further strengthened the port's position as the preferred hub for windmill blade exports among the Indian ports. He also highlighted that the port was developing a dedicated terminal exclusively for handling windmill blades and components.
