US urges curb of Google's search dominance as AI looms
Washington – US government attorneys urged a federal judge Monday to make Google spin off its Chrome browser, arguing artificial intelligence is poised to ramp up the tech giant's online search dominance.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) made its pitch at a hearing before District Judge Amit Mehta, who is considering 'remedies' after making a landmark decision last year that Google maintained an illegal monopoly in online search.
'Nothing less than the future of the internet is at stake here,' Assistant Attorney General Gail Slater said prior to the start of the hearing in Washington.
'If Google's conduct is not remedied, it will control much of the internet for the next decade and not just in internet search, but in new technologies like artificial intelligence.'
Google is among the tech companies investing heavily to be among the leader in AI, and is weaving the technology into search and other online offerings.
Google countered in the case that the United States has gone way beyond the scope of the suit by recommending a spinoff of its widely used Chrome, and holding open the option to force a sale of its Android mobile operating system.
The legal case focused on Google's agreements with partners such as Apple and Samsung to distribute its search tools, noted Google president of global affairs Kent Walker.
'The DOJ chose to push a radical interventionist agenda that would harm Americans and America's global technology leadership,' Walker wrote in a blog post.
'The DOJ's wildly overbroad proposal goes miles beyond the Court's decision.'
The DOJ case against Google regarding its dominance in internet search was filed in 2020.
Judge Mehta ruled against Google in August 2024.
– Ad tech under fire –
Google's battle to protect Chrome renewed just days after a different US judge ruled this month that it wielded monopoly power in the online ad technology market, in a legal blow that could rattle the tech giant's revenue engine.
The federal government and more than a dozen US states filed the antitrust suit against Alphabet-owned Google, accusing it of acting illegally to dominate three sectors of digital advertising — publisher ad servers, advertiser tools, and ad exchanges.
The vast majority of websites use Google ad software products that, combined, leave no way for publishers to escape Google's advertising technology, the plaintiffs alleged.
District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema agreed with most of that reasoning, ruling that Google built an illegal monopoly over ad software and tools used by publishers, but partially dismissed the argument related to tools used by advertisers.
'Google has willfully engaged in a series of anticompetitive acts to acquire and maintain monopoly power in the publisher ad server and ad exchange markets for open-web display advertising,' Brinkema said in her ruling.
The judge concluded that Google further entrenched its monopoly power with anticompetitive customer policies and by eliminating desirable product features.
Online advertising is the driving engine of Google's fortune and pays for widely used online services like Maps, Gmail, and search offered free.
Money pouring into Google's coffers also allows the Silicon Valley company to spend billions of dollars on its artificial intelligence efforts.
Combined, the courtroom defeats have the potential to leave Google split up and its influence curbed.
Google said it is appealing both rulings.

Gold poised for weekly gain; silver touches over 13-year high
Shafaq News/ Gold firmed on Friday, and was poised for a weekly rise after U.S. data this week boosted interest rate cut hopes by the Federal Reserve, while silver hit a more than 13-year high. Spot gold was up 0.4% at $3,367.45 an ounce, as of 0854 GMT. Bullion has gained 2.4% for the week so far. U.S. gold futures climbed 0.5% to $3,390.70. "The disappointing jobless claims data, indicating potential labor market weakness, has had a more substantial impact on gold prices than the optimism stemming from President Trump's call with President Xi," said Alexander Zumpfe, a precious metals trader at Heraeus Metals Germany. U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping held a rare call Thursday amid trade tensions and a dispute over critical minerals. The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits increased to a seven-month high last week, the Labor Department showed Thursday. Markets are now eyeing the upcoming U.S. nonfarm payroll report, due at 1230 GMT, after a series of data releases this week signaled softness in the labor market. Economists polled by Reuters forecast nonfarm payrolls increased by 130,000 jobs in May, while the unemployment rate is expected to remain steady at 4.2%. "A softening US labor market would likely increase pressure on the Fed to ease monetary policy, especially if payrolls disappoint," Zumpfe added. Gold, traditionally considered a safe-haven asset during political and economic uncertainty, tends to thrive in a low-rate environment. Meanwhile, spot silver rose 0.2% to $36.23 per ounce, after hitting a more than 13-year high earlier in the session. Platinum rose 2.7% to $1,163.95, its highest level since March 2022. Palladium was up 1.4% at $1,019.62. Gold is struggling really to break higher in the short term, driving investors toward undervalued silver and platinum, said Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank.

Older iPhones, Androids lose WhatsApp access
Shafaq News/ WhatsApp will stop working on several older smartphones beginning Sunday, June 1, according to Meta, the app's parent company. The update, initially planned for May 5, was postponed for several weeks before June 1 was confirmed as the final rollout date. Starting Sunday, WhatsApp will only be compatible with iPhones running iOS 15.1 or later and Android devices operating on version 5.1 or newer. Affected models include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. Some reports have also indicated that support may be discontinued for the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and the first-generation iPhone SE. These devices, however, can still receive updates up to iOS 15.8.4, which enables their continued access to WhatsApp as long as the software is kept up to date.

DeepSeek unveils upgraded giant-challenging R1 model
Shafaq News/ Chinese AI firm DeepSeek has released an upgraded version of its flagship R1 reasoning model, intensifying competition with US leaders OpenAI and Google. The updated model, R1-0528, significantly enhances performance in complex inference tasks, narrowing the gap with OpenAI's o3 series and Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro, according to a post on the developer platform Hugging Face. While described as a 'minor' version upgrade, R1-0528 introduces substantial improvements in mathematical reasoning, programming, and logical deduction. DeepSeek also reported a 50% reduction in hallucinations—AI-generated false or misleading output—in tasks such as rewriting and summarization. In a WeChat post, the Hangzhou-based firm said the model now excels at generating front-end code, roleplaying, and producing creative writing including essays and novels. 'The model has demonstrated outstanding performance across various benchmark evaluations.' Originally launched in January, R1 quickly went viral, challenging assumptions that advanced AI development requires vast computing infrastructure. Its success triggered responses from Chinese tech giants such as Alibaba and Tencent, both of which released competing models claiming superior performance. DeepSeek also disclosed that it applied a distillation technique—transferring the reasoning methodology from R1-0528—to enhance Alibaba's Qwen 3 8B Base model, boosting its performance by more than 10%. 'We believe the chain-of-thought from DeepSeek-R1-0528 will hold significant importance for both academic research and industrial development focused on small-scale models,' the company added.
