How Hostels Are Becoming The Preferred Co-Living Choice For Young Professionals

Last Updated: With a rise in remote work opportunities, Gen Z believes in working from new destinations everyday. This has led to a boom in hostel culture across India. Hostels in India have officially shaken off their backpacker stereotype. What began as budget-friendly stopovers has evolved into lifestyle destinations for Gen Z, solo travellers, and remote professionals. With their chill vibe, cost-effective setup, and built-in community, hostels today are more than just a bed for the night; they're a way to live. As rental prices soar and long-term leases grow more rigid, hostels offer a flexible, no-fuss alternative. Add to that the rising popularity of remote work, and you've got the perfect storm for a co-living boom. Short Stays Are Getting Longer Hostel stays are no longer limited to weekend getaways or quick pit stops. Among digital nomads and young professionals, the average stay has grown significantly – from five nights in 2019 to nearly 14 nights in 2024. That's largely due to hostels adapting to new lifestyles, with nearly 73% offering co-working spaces that support both productivity and play. 'We've turned the idea of hostels into vibrant, all-in-one spaces where people come to live, work, and connect," says Pankaj Parwanda, co-founder of goSTOPS. 'From travelers seeking green escapes to Gen Z explorers chasing authentic community vibes, today's hostels offer experiences that go far beyond just a place to stay." 'Today's generation values easy access, affordability, and a lifestyle that blends fun with comfort," Parwanda explains. 'We've seen one-time guests return and gradually adopt this way of living because it feels more human, connected, and real." It's a reflection of a broader generational shift: freedom over permanence, connection over isolation, and experiences over ownership. No Chores, No Landlords, No Stress Modern hostels are more than convenient; they're plug-and-play living solutions. No utility bills, furniture shopping, or landlord negotiations. Just move in, unpack, and focus on your work, passions, or travels. For those craving independence without the baggage, hostel living hits the sweet spot. Today's hostels represent a conscious shift in how young people want to live. They're choosing fluidity, flexibility, and freedom, while still having a place to call home. Whether it's for a week or a few months, hostel life is no longer the alternative. It's the new normal. view comments First Published: August 02, 2025, 10:19 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Visa-tech startup Atlys has announced a two-day pricing experiment scheduled for early August that it claims is aimed at removing financial friction in the visa application process for Indian travellers . The company, which facilitates visa applications digitally, will temporarily offer visa services for multiple global destinations at a flat fee of ₹1 on August 4 and 5 via its positioned as a limited-time initiative, the move reflects a larger shift in how Indian travellers—especially first-time applicants, Gen Z, and millennials—are approaching international travel planning. In recent months, Atlys has reported a notable rise in search traffic for countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Georgia, the UAE, and the UK, with growth ranging from 18% to 44% compared to the prior two months. A significant share of this surge comes from Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, suggesting a wider base of outbound travel interest beyond traditional metro hubs.'Atlys was created to eliminate friction from the visa process. With the One Way Out Sale, we are taking that mission even further,' said Mohak Nahta , Founder and CEO of Atlys. 'For the first time, travellers can get visas at a price that feels impossible. We want to challenge what people expect from this industry and prove that global travel can be truly within reach.'The list of destinations covered under the initiative includes countries such as the UAE, UK, Vietnam, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, and Egypt, among others. For countries requiring physical appointments, including the US and select Schengen states, appointment booking services will also be offered at the same nominal to a 2024 data, Indian travellers lost over ₹664 crore in non-refundable visa fees last year alone—often due to documentation errors, rejections, or failed appointments. The figure highlights the financial risk embedded in the current visa ecosystem, especially for newer travellers navigating the process that context, Atlys's move could be seen as both a signal of shifting industry economics and a potential indicator of how travel-tech platforms are recalibrating to meet consumer demand post-pandemic. With digital visa solutions gaining ground, companies like Atlys are positioning themselves not just as facilitators of documentation, but as gateways to global startup, which has raised over $40 million in funding, has previously launched AI-based tools to simulate consular interviews and evaluate visa probability. Its broader focus has been to digitize traditionally opaque processes and provide a mobile-first, self-serve experience for it remains to be seen how pricing experiments like these evolve in the long term, the data suggests a growing appetite for frictionless international travel—particularly among India's younger, increasingly mobile population.

Maggi with a twist (and a view) at this cafe in Hyderabad

Imagine sitting at a restaurant overlooking Durgam Cheruvu lake, tucking into a bowl of Maggi. At Café Delhi Heights in Inorbit Mall, that is exactly what you can do. Except, this is not your usual two-minute Maggi — it is ISBT (Inter State Bus Terminus)makhani Maggi, served in a large pasta bowl. In the meantime I also had a pecan toastie. Curious to know why Maggi needed a makhani twist, I ordered it. Fifteen minutes later (because, even plain Maggi never takes two minutes), my bowl arrived glistening with ghee and smelling like butter chicken masala. One forkful and my only thought was: why? Why did Maggi need this treatment? And why did I, clearly not part of the 'young crowd' the staff said swears by this dish, order it? Café Delhi Heights has plenty on its menu — Punjabi kadhi chawal, Punjabi palak choley, Jammu special Rajma rice, pizzas, pastas, sandwiches and more. So there is no pressure to follow Gen Z's choices. The café, done up in soft pastel greens, has comfortable seating, views of the lake on one side and the mall on the other, and is the perfect place to wrap up a shopping spree. I quickly redeemed my palate with spicy garlic chicken wings, which disappeared in no time. Then came the grilled chicken for me and a chicken jumbo lollipop for my colleague; both left us with satisfied smiles. No Hyderabadi meal feels complete without chai, so I ended lunch with a hot cup of adrak wali chai (ginger masala tea) and a vada pav. Just as it began to rain, it felt like the perfect endnote to the meal. Prices start at ₹250.
