'Major' judiciary reveal fizzles, questions remain

KUALA LUMPUR: The much-anticipated announcement on top judicial appointments failed to materialise, leaving many guessing as to who would be the country's next Chief Justice. Clarity over vacant positions at the highest level of the judiciary, following weeks of speculation, had been expected today. Just a day earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hinted at an announcement in conjunction with the Conference of Rulers meeting in Istana Negara. Today, the Malay rulers and their representatives, along with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak, Sabah, Penang, and Melaka, convened. Key issues, including national security and the judiciary, were discussed, but no announcement followed. However, throughout the day speculation was rife about who would be appointed Chief Justice. Several names were bandied about – minus former attorney-general Tan Sri Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh. This was because it had been revealed by Pakatan Harapan MPs who met Anwar on Monday that Terrirudin's name was not on the list for any top posts. It is understood that Court of Appeal judge Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh is the frontrunner for the Chief Justice's post. Meanwhile, Datuk Abu Bakar Jais is being tipped to be the new Court of Appeal president, succeeding Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, who retired on July 2. Datuk Azizah Nawawi, meanwhile, is said to succeed Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak. Meanwhile, acting Chief Justice Datuk Seri Hasnah Hashim will continue to serve as Chief Judge of Malaya. The appointments are expected to be announced tomorrow.

PM urges business-friendly reforms following Malaysia's ranking rise

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts to enhance the ease of doing business in Malaysia, following the country's improved performance in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025, where it jumped 11 places to rank 23rd globally. Anwar described the result, the best in five years, as a clear sign of progress, but warned that sustained reforms remain necessary to maintain momentum. "I urge all relevant parties to continue strengthening their resolve and efforts to improve the ease of doing business in the country," he said in a Facebook post after chairing the National Physical Planning Council meeting. He also said that comprehensive reform in governance and public service delivery is important, highlighting the need for systems that are more efficient, transparent and uphold integrity. Anwar added that effective planning under the Town and Country Planning Act 1976, including reviewing state structure plans and land use proposals, is vital to ensure that development remains people-centric and investor-friendly. "These steps are crucial to safeguard national prosperity, boost investor confidence, and most importantly, ensure that the well-being of the people remains at the heart of development," he said.

UN Agency Describes Gaza War As 'Crisis For Rules-Based International Order'

GENEVA, July 16 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The chief of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees on Wednesday warned that the war in Gaza has escalated beyond a humanitarian catastrophe, describing it as a fundamental threat to the rules-based international order and urging immediate action by states, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. "Entire families, entire neighbourhoods, an entire generation are being wiped out in Gaza," Philippe Lazzarini said on X, citing his address to the Emergency Conference of States held in Bogota. "Hundreds of UNRWA staff -- our colleagues, our friends -- have been killed. Aid is blocked. Civilians are not protected," he added.
