Ladybugs stop play at Lord's, the home of cricket

New York Times10-07-2025
Cricket matches have been stopped for various strange reasons over the years, from too much sun, swarms of bees to puddles on the outfield.
But it was a new one for most involved in the first day of England Test against India at Lord's on Thursday: ladybugs stopped play.
In the closing stages of the day, a 'loveliness' (which is genuinely the collective noun) of ladybirds descended upon the field at the Pavilion End of the ground. This appeared to distract the England batsmen, Ben Stokes and Joe Root, and caused a temporary halt in play.

Umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula Saikat conferred, but did not seem entirely certain of what to do in the situation — there is no specialist provision for an invasion of ladybugs in the laws of the game — and told the teams to resume playing.
Stokes then pulled away as Indian bowler Akash Deep was at the top of his run up, swatting the insects away with his hand. After that, the final few overs of the day went without incident.
The Athletic can confirm that, as of around 15 minutes after the close of play, the ladybirds had broadly cleared from the field, save for a few left on the boundary markers.
It was one of a number of delays to the day, as England closed on 251 for four, with Joe Root not out on 99.
Stokes appeared to suffer an injury which seriously hampered his running between the wickets, but did not leave the field for treatment. If the injury prevents him from bowling later in the game, it will provide England with some significant problems given their attack already has a series of fitness-related question marks hanging over it.
Jofra Archer has returned to the team after four injury-hit years away, Brydon Carse struggled with a foot problem in the last Test at Edgbaston, where the 36-year-old Chris Woakes struggled and looked weary.
Off spinner Shoaib Bashir does not appear to have any fitness problems, but has taken his eight wickets in the series at a hefty average of 59.5.
Earlier, India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was forced to leave the field with an injury to a finger, with substitute Dhruv Jurel taking over the gloves.

Oliver Glasner: Eberechi Eze a Crystal Palace player, no one's told me otherwise

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner said Eberechi Eze will play for as long as he remains at the club and urged fans not to believe 'rumours' the England international is about to be sold. Amid reports of an imminent move, Eze was a surprise inclusion as Palace began their Premier League campaign with a goalless draw against a lacklustre Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He looked to have delivered a potential parting gift to supporters with a brilliant first-half free-kick before VAR intervened controversially to disallow the goal. Referee Darren England initially allowed Eze's bullet finish after 15 minutes to stand, but a rarely-invoked rule stating an attacking player may not stand within a yard of the defensive wall at a free-kick meant the presence of Marc Guehi – another surprise starter amid interest from Liverpool – next to Moises Caicedo constituted a foul. 'We know the rule that you have to be one yard away from the wall,' said Glasner. 'At the beginning we were, maybe we stepped too early because you have to wait until the kicker kicks the ball. If this was the case then maybe it's right.' Palace have had talks with Tottenham over Eze and Arsenal are also reported to be keen to sign the midfielder, who scored the winner when the Eagles beat Manchester City to lift the FA Cup at Wembley in May, in light of which he was not expected to feature in west London. The 27-year-old's contract included a £68million release clause that expired on Friday, with neither Spurs nor Arsenal reportedly willing to go that high. 'As much as I know, Eze has a contract with Crystal Palace, he's a Crystal Palace player and he showed it today,' said Glasner. 'As long as he is a Palace player and performs like this he will play for us. Nobody has told me something else. 'He was picked because he's a Crystal Palace player and he's a very good player. He trained the whole week so there was no reason not to pick him. 'The players are giving their answer (to press speculation) week by week. Last week winning against Liverpool on penalties (in the Community Shield) and here against the club world champions. 'Don't always believe what you read, especially on the internet. And here it's the same. Who knows that this is the truth, what is written? You've got rumours, so many rumours. 'I watch the players every day. If most of the things that are written about them are true, they couldn't perform like this, they couldn't be together like this, couldn't be committed like this.' After a truncated pre-season following victory in the Club World Cup, everything pointed to a Chelsea side lacking both preparation and rest as Glasner's men coped relative easily with a new-look yet disjointed attack. Playing 35 days after their win in the final against Paris St Germain, Enzo Maresca's team bore signs of mental fatigue, particularly in a first half low on creativity. Marc Cucurella came close with a header that was cleared off the line, while on their league debuts for the club Liam Delap and 18-year-old Brazil international Estevao Willian also missed chances. However, Maresca was reluctant to blame limited pre-season preparations for a leggy display. 'I don't think so, because in the end we competed, we tried to win the game,' he said. 'We had some chances at the end with Estevao, with Andrey Santos. That showed probably we competed quite good. 'They (Palace) have played already seven or eight games, for us we played two friendly games where we tried to share minutes, so our first real game was today. '(Estevao) was very good, he showed personality. He has already showed that in training. No doubt that slowly, slowly he will be a very important player for this club.'

Caoimhin Kelleher endures nightmare debut in first Premier League game since Liverpool exit

Caoimhin Kelleher's highly anticipated Premier League debut after leaving Liverpool turned into a game to forget, as the Republic of Ireland international endured a torrid start to life at Brentford. The 26-year-old goalkeeper swapped Anfield for the Bees this summer in a deal worth an initial £12.5 million ($17m), potentially rising to £18 million ($24m) with add-ons. Kelleher, long regarded as one of the best backup goalkeepers in the Premier League during his time at Liverpool, made just 10 league appearances for the Reds across six seasons. His performances in domestic cup competitions, including his penalty heroics in the 2022 Carabao Cup final, earned him a reputation as a reliable deputy to Alisson Becker. Yet in his league debut under new manager Keith Andrews, Kelleher had a game to forget in Brentford's opener against Nottingham Forest. Brentford found themselves trailing inside the opening five minutes. Elliot Anderson's in-swinging corner, created after Callum Hudson-Odoi's work down the flank, fell kindly for Chris Wood, and the New Zealand striker poked a bouncing effort past Kelleher into the far corner. Anderson then enjoyed a flurry of opportunities, drilling a low effort from 25 yards that lacked the power to trouble Kelleher. But Forest's pressure soon told. Gibbs-White, under pressure from Michael Kayode, whipped in a dangerous cross that Ndoye met with a clever looping header back across the goal to double the lead. The hosts struck again in first-half stoppage time, with Anderson threading a precise through ball for Wood, who calmly rounded Kelleher before slotting into an empty net to make it three. Igor Thiago coolly slotted home from the penalty spot to hand Andrews a fleeting reprieve, but the Bees were comfortably second best in the end. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson started the game on the bench, coming on in the 69th minute. The midfielder arrived on a two-year contract after leaving Ajax last month, with both parties agreeing to terminate his deal a year ahead of schedule. says: For Kelleher, the challenge now will be to prove that this rocky start is no more than an early setback in what he hopes will be a long and successful Premier League career. With his ability to command his area, distribution under pressure, and shot-stopping pedigree, there is every chance he can recover quickly

Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool talks for England star

Liverpool are continuing their talks with Crystal Palace over a deal for Marc Guehi. That's according to a new report from Fabrizio Romano. It strongly suggests that sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Arne Slot are not currently satisfied with their central defensive options. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Right now the club have got only three senior options at their disposal including Virgil van DijkIbrahima Konate and Joe Gomez. Another central defender, Giovanni Leoni, was added last week from Parma for around £26m. However, the Italian is just 18 years old - and has played only 17 top-flight games in his career. Konate doubts Would it be a gamble to throw him in at the deep end rather than letting him settle into life at the club? Then you need to factor in the complications over Konate's contract. With the defender's current deal expiring in 2026, it's been suggested he's planning on running down his contract. Real Madrid of course are lying in wait - prepared to offer the Frenchman an €18m signing-on fee. If he is to go this summer, then some succession planning will be required sooner rather than later. Guehi can solve the problem Palace are facing a similar conundrum over Guehi - with their captain's contract also up in 2026. It makes sense therefore to ship out Konate if he won't sign a new deal and bring Guehi in as a ready-made, high-class replacement. Even so, that would leave Liverpool exactly where they were numbers-wise. With Jarell Quansah having left the club, there is probably call for at least one more senior centre-back even if Konate stays through this summer. Liverpool require centre-back options And that's before we get to the issues faced by Konate and Van Dijk on Friday night against Bournemouth. Neither covered themselves in glory on Antoine Semenyo's goals and it would be nice for Arne Slot to have increased options. It is Liverpool's partnership out of necessity - and doesn't legislate for injury, suspension or a loss of form. With much of the transfer focus still on Alexander Isak at the other end of the pitch, it is Liverpool's threadbare options at centre-back that is the real issue. Slot and Richard Hughes would do well to act accordingly and push through the signing of the England international.
