HighlightsSameer Bajaj, the head of corporate communications and corporate affairs at MakeMyTrip, discussed the importance of data-driven communication at the India Communication Summit 2025. MakeMyTrip faced a challenge of low headline presence despite a significant share of voice, prompting a year-long effort to align internal teams and produce unique insights and reports. The campaign resulted in 1,800 media exposures at no cost, a 50% increase in media visibility, and 46% of mentions being headline placements, significantly boosting the brand's engagement with travelers.
In today's digital era, where data is the new oil,
data-driven communication
uses analytics to craft tailored messages for specific audiences. By decoding customer behaviour and preferences, brands can create personalised, resonant content that boosts engagement, sharpens decision-making and delivers impactful outcomes.
At the
India Communication Summit 2025
,
Sameer Bajaj
, head of
corporate communications
and corporate affairs,
MakeMyTrip
, addressed the audience on data-driven communication. Presenting an insightful case study, he showcased how leveraging data enhances communication strategies, driving impactful engagement.
Kicking off the address, Bajaj highlighted the challenge MakeMyTrip was facing: despite having a significant share of voice (SOV), the brand was not making it to the headlines.
Elaborating on this challenge, Bajaj said, 'We were reaching travellers from every angle, supporting offline travel agents and capturing signals from direct browsing, but how do we leverage these signals for communication? In the travel sector, trend stories dominate PR, yet MakeMyTrip's headline presence was low. We were part of trends but not leading them'.
To address this challenge, MakeMyTrip spent one year aligning internal teams to unearth unique insights and produce exclusive case studies or reports that competitors couldn't replicate.
'These insights became our USP because MakeMyTrip processes 230 transactions per minute. This effort culminated in three distinctive reports, showcasing our ability to transform data into compelling narratives that strengthen brand communication and elevate our industry presence,' Bajaj noted.
The report resonated across the ecosystem and achieved PR success. The results were remarkable: 1,800
media exposure
s without spending a penny. Additionally, the report, distributed only to national outlets, engaged every major newspaper. This led to a 50% surge in media exposure and added fresh visibility. Most notably, 46% of mentions were headline placements, underscoring the campaign's impact.
Concluding the session, Bajaj noted that the report's success boosted engagement from travellers. 'It not only amplified our
media presence
but also built greater confidence among all stakeholders, beyond just media outlets,' Bajaj concluded.

"We didn't want to travel too far with kids, so we booked a pool villa at Raichak. It's more relaxed than rushing through a packed sightseeing schedule," said Aritra Saha, a graphic designer. SUV rental firms are also reporting a spike in bookings, especially for large groups headed to beaches or hill retreats. "All our bigger vehiclesare booked for the long weekend. People prefer the comfort of SUVs when travelling with friends or extended family," said Anirban Chakraborty, who runs a car rental service in New Alipore. "We had two 12-seater buses. They too were long booked." Tour operators say the long weekend has given many the perfect excuse for a short break before the festive season rush. "This year's Aug holiday stretch is as busy as Durga Puja in terms of short-haul travel," said tour planner Paritosh Banerjee. Many, like the newly wed Diptobrata Bhattacharya, are also driving to Puri with his wife and two other friends to spend the weekend as they plan to head out of the city after office on Thursday. Nationally, the top 10 most trending domestic cities for this long weekend include Puri, Goa, Udaipur, Jaipur, Lonavala, Varanasi, Coorg, Mahabaleshwar, Ooty, and Pondicherry. Among the international destinations closer to home, Pattaya, Bali, Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai, and Phuket are the trending short hauls. "Independence Day has emerged as a key travel occasion over the years. This year too, the search and booking trends point to strong intent to travel over the Independence Day weekend. With Independence Day on a Friday, travel demand appears to be peaking two days earlier, on Wednesday, Aug 13, giving early travellers a five-day window," said Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group CEO, MakeMyTrip. NEW DELHI: India's travel and hospitality sector is set for a strong upswing this long weekend, with early trends indicating that travellers are heading to popular destinations in large numbers. Independence Day weekend 2025: Goa to Singapore, where Indians are headed

The Independence Day extended weekend you've been waiting for is finally here — and it's sending travellers across India into booking overdrive. Hotels are reporting a rush of reservations, airfares are holding steady, and popular destinations are bracing for packed beaches, bustling streets, and high demand. Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group CEO, MakeMyTrip, said Independence Day has steadily grown into a major travel occasion. 'This year too, the search and booking trends point to strong intent to travel over the Independence Day weekend. With Independence Day on a Friday, travel demand appears to be peaking two days earlier, on Wednesday, August 13, giving early travellers a five-day window,' he said. Domestic favourites this year include Goa, Udaipur, Jaipur, Puri, Lonavala, Varanasi, Coorg, Mahabaleshwar, Ooty and Pondicherry. Leading international picks are Pattaya, Bali, Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai, Phuket, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Zurich and London. Turning the weekend into a five-day holiday Pickyourtrail co-founder Hari Ganapathy shared a leave strategy for those looking to stretch the break. 'Take Wednesday, August 14, and Monday, August 18 off. Pair them with Independence Day on Friday, August 15, and Janmashtami on Saturday, August 16, and you have a perfect stretch for that holiday you've been putting off,' he said. Travel platforms say the August break is ideal for destinations that offer quick flights, easy visas, and enough variety to feel like a proper escape without a long absence from work. Ganapathy recommends: Thailand (Phuket + Phi Phi) Day 1: Arrive in Phuket, check into a beach resort, and explore Bangla Road at night. Day 2: Take a full-day trip to Phi Phi Islands for snorkelling, Maya Bay views, and a picnic lunch. Day 3: Visit the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, and local markets; finish with a cooking class or spa. Day 4: Morning beach walk before heading home. Sri Lanka (Galle + South Coast) Day 1: Arrive in Colombo, travel to Galle Fort, explore the lanes, and watch the sunset from the ramparts. Day 2: Beach-hop at Unawatuna and Jungle Beach, visit the Peace Pagoda. Day 3: Spend the day in Mirissa with whale watching (seasonal) or beach BBQ. Day 4: Coffee, shopping, and a final stroll through the fort before returning to Colombo. Dubai Day 1: Check into a hotel in Downtown or Marina and explore the area. Day 2: Visit Dubai Mall, Museum of the Future, and Dubai Aquarium. Day 3: Explore Al Fahidi, take an abra ride, and go for a desert safari. Day 4: Relax at JBR or Kite Beach and enjoy a weekend brunch. Day 5: Shopping at Souk Madinat or a spa visit before departure. Singapore Day 1: Check into a central hotel and walk the Marina Bay promenade. Day 2: Visit Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands SkyPark. Day 3: Spend a full day at Sentosa. Day 4: Explore Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam. Day 5: Wander through Jewel Changi Airport before flying out. Cox & Kings says short-haul experiences with a 'big feel' are in demand — from three-night cruises from Mumbai to vineyard stays in Nashik, cultural trails in Jaipur, and digital detox retreats in the hills. Hotels prepare for a busy weekend K B Kachru, president of the Hotel Association of India (HAI) and chairman, South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group, said member hotels are already seeing an increase in advance bookings. 'Reports and trends indicate a rise in both occupancy and room rates over the long Independence Day weekend. Some properties are witnessing up to a 40 per cent surge in bookings compared to last year, with ADRs expected to be 10–15 per cent higher year-on-year,' he said. Chander K Baljee, CMD of Royal Orchid Hotels Ltd (ROHL), told PTI, 'We are seeing steady interest for the extended Independence Day weekend from August 14 to 17. While the booking momentum is yet to fully pick up, we anticipate strong last-minute demand, which is quite typical for long weekends in the domestic market. Compared to the same period last year, we're observing an approximate increase of Rs 1,280 in rates. We expect the Average Room Rate to close around Rs 6,450, which is a 7–8 per cent increase over last year's rate of Rs 6,000 on the retail segment.'
