Tracy Beaker's Dani Harmer shares symptoms after diagnosis at 36
The Tracy Beaker star has been open with fans about her diagnosis, hoping it will help others spot the signs too
A popular children's TV star has shared her struggles with perimenopause. Tracy Beaker star Dani Harmer has urged other women to get checked by a doctor if they're experiencing any symptoms.
Famed for her role in the CBBC adaptation of the popular books by Jacqueline Wilson, Dani Harmer started her own TikTok profile, which hit fans of the show with a wave of nostalgia. People felt very old seeing that 'Tracy Beaker' is now a 36-year-old mum with two young kids of her own.
Dani recently spoke on ITV's This Morning with Ben Shepherd and Cat Deeley alongside resident GP Dr Zoe about an ongoing health issue that may not be so obvious to fans. The TV and theatre actress used her newfound platform to talk about her experience with early or premature menopause.
In a TikTok, 36-year-old Dani shared how she had been diagnosed with perimenopause. This can lead to other issues with your physical and mental health, as well as finding it harder to get pregnant.
According to the NHS, women who enter menopause before the age of 45 are considered to have started early. The health service explained on its website that: "Menopause is when your periods stop due to lower hormone levels. It usually affects women between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can affect anyone who has periods.
"The main symptom of early or premature menopause is not having your period regularly or your periods stopping completely before the age of 45." The website lists a few more red flags that women may want to look out for, such as:
hot flushes and night sweats
vaginal dryness
difficulty sleeping
low mood or anxiety
reduced sex drive
problems with memory or concentration
Dani said that her partner Simon had noticed her "whole personality had pretty much changed" and added that she herself "knew something was off" and there was "too much to ignore". She was diagnosed with perimenopause, crediting her good medical experience largely down to the fact she had a female GP.
One symptom that Dani talked about online and on the ITV daytime show was hair loss. The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant talked about how her hair was "thinning badly" and shared photos of it originally falling out in clumps.
According to Flo, a popular female health app specifically for tracking periods and ovulation, claimed that perimenopause can cause hair thinning due to fluctuating hormone levels.
One of their experts said: "Before perimenopause, your levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone rise and fall in a continuous cycle every month in preparation for a potential pregnancy. But when perimenopause kicks in, these hormones start to change, fluctuating to high and low levels, which can trigger hair loss.
"Estrogen is obviously important in your menstrual cycle, but it also promotes hair growth. So when estrogen levels start to drop, this can interrupt your hair cycle and make it look and feel thinner, too."
The main treatments for early or premature menopause are medicines such as the combined contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to replace the hormones that are at low levels. The NHS adds that: "You can also try making lifestyle changes to help manage your symptoms and stay healthy, such as exercising regularly and eating calcium-rich food like yoghurts."
If you're finding early or premature menopause difficult and it's affecting your mental health, help and support is available. You can get NHS talking therapies without seeing a GP first.

Love Island star recalls how she delivered baby sister at home with shoelace
EXCLUSIVE: Love Island 2025 star Alima Gagigo has opened up about the extraordinary moment she delivered her baby sister at home - and she's determined to make a difference in the villa Love Island stunner Alima Gagigo is already making headlines - and not just for her villa debut. In a story that's as jaw-dropping as it is heartwarming, the 23-year-old Londoner has revealed she once delivered her baby sister at home using a shoelace to tie the umbilical cord. The incident happened in January 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, ahead of the brand new series kicking off on Monday June 9, Alima shared the extraordinary moment that proved she's not just reality TV-ready - she's resilient under pressure, too. 'Yeah! It was back in January 2020. My sister's a COVID baby,' she said. 'It was just me and my mum at home, and the labour was 15 minutes. I had to tie the umbilical cord with a shoelace while on the phone with paramedics. It was scary but amazing looking back.' Alima is a wealth management client services executive living in Glasgow. Now, the educated beauty is swapping emergency home births for bikinis and bombshell drama in the sun-soaked Love Island villa, and she's determined to make a difference while doing it. Representation, she says, is front and centre. '100%. When I watched the show last year, seeing girls like Whitney made a difference,' Alima told us. 'If I can be that person this year, it could give confidence to others who might want to go on the show in the future. Representation really matters.' Alima, who describes her hair plans as 'glueless wigs - closures instead of frontals,' is stepping into the ITV2 spotlight following in the footsteps of fan favourite love island star Whitney Adebayo, who starred on the 10th series joining as a bombshell. And it turns out Whitney's already showing love for her fellow Islander. 'I actually didn't know that - this is the first time I'm hearing it!' she said when told of Whitney's online support. 'I follow her and absolutely loved her journey. As another dark-skinned woman, I could really relate. Maybe she supports me because she knows what I might be going through.' The support from her circle has also been overwhelming, with her family cheering her on from the sidelines. 'Everyone's buzzing! Friends and family are super excited. My mum was especially excited - taking pictures and everything when she dropped me at the airport!' And while Love Island's latest season is already making headlines - ITV bosses recently confirmed they won't shy away from showing sex on screen if it happens - Alima admits she is 'going to stay true to myself.' 'On the outside, I don't really do that kind of thing, so I don't think I'll be getting up to much in the villa either.' That down-to-earth energy is exactly what fans are already loving. Alima, who says she's 'not really anxious' about how she'll be perceived as a Black woman on the show, is focused on being authentic. 'Seeing girls like Whitney and Mimii [Ngulube] last year who were themselves and came across amazing gave me confidence,' she added. 'I want to be fully myself, regardless of stereotypes.' She's not afraid to laugh either - especially when it comes to her biggest dating ick. 'Honestly, if someone rapped or sang to me and it was bad - I wouldn't know what to say. If it's good, then fair enough, but if As the 2025 series kicks off with a fresh group of hopefuls and more drama promised than ever before, Alima is clearly more than ready to hit the villa. Catch Love Island every night at 9pm from Monday 9 June on ITV2 and ITVX

'Yes, it's something that we've been open with our whole lives, it doesn't mean I'm going in there like, 'I'm going to do that' whatever happens, happens. 'They're going to be supportive no matter what.' Advertisement Blu, who's already turning heads with his good looks and smooth charm, also hinted he's got high hopes for the villa's most infamous room. 'I'm keen to see what the Hideaway's got in store. See how it compares, mum's shop and the Hideaway.' So, which will come out on top? 'Probably my mum's shop, to be honest,' Blu told The Sun. Advertisement 'They bring in some, like, I don't know… not the trashy stuff.' Blu's saucy background is already his claim to fame. Love rats & machete arrests: Love Island's most DRAMATIC launch ever?! Speaking to ITV, he revealed: 'My mum owns a sex shop in Spain, which everyone knows and is quite popular. 'Growing up as a kid I was laughed at for it, but little did people know that all their parents were buying stuff from there.' Advertisement But despite his racy roots, Blu insists he's a softie at heart and is looking for something real: 'Someone who's family orientated, has a lot of love to give and a lot of love to receive – personality goes a long way.' And when quizzed on whether Maya Jama would hire or fire him based on his flirting alone, Blu joked: 'She'd fire me – but I've got the charm to smooth things over with a girl. 'The fact I speak fluent Spanish comes in handy when it comes to flirting!' Businessman Blu will be swapping his wardrobe of smart suits for swimming trucks when he walks into the villa.
