Haunting theory after woman found tortured to death with face covered in bleach

Mercedes Vega who was found murdered in a burning car had been due to testify against a man who once held her at gunpoint.
Police investigating the brutal murder of a dancer believe she was targeted for agreeing to testify against a man who had previously threatened her at gunpoint.

Mercedes Vega, 22, remains were discovered in April 2023 inside a burning car in Tempe, Arizona, with her face covered in bleach. Mercedes had been on her way to meet a friend but never arrived, reports the Mirror.

Now, police believe a third person may have been involved in her death. Two men have already been charged — but newly uncovered details have cast suspicion on a third individual called Cudjoe Young.

It has emerged that Young had previously been charged with armed robbery, with Vega naming him as the suspect. The incident happened in 2020 when the dancer was ambushed outside the club where she worked by a masked gunman.
He demanded her belongings, threatened to kill her, and shoved her to the ground before fleeing. Police have now confirmed Vega was due to give evidence in court against Young on the very day she was found dead.
NBC News reports that Maricopa County police believe Young should face charges of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Gloves and bleach were discovered in the front of the burnt-out car, while lighter fluid was found in the back seat.
'We've felt like we've been drowning in a sea of despair and grief for two and a half years,' said her heartbroken mother, Erika Pillsbury. 'And now we've been thrown a life preserver. The people that are responsible for murdering my little daughter are hopefully going to face justice."
Police say someone tried to hack into Mercedes' phone after snatching it — but failed to gain access. A spokesperson for Scottsdale Police, who investigated the robbery, said officers had done the best they could with the information available at the time.

Jared Gray and Sencere Hayes have already been charged in connection with Vega's death. Gray, currently in jail in Georgia, faces charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping. Hayes has pleaded not guilty to murder.
Police say Hayes' fingerprint was found on a bloody grocery bag inside Mercedes' car.

Her devastated father, Tom Pillsbury, told of the torment of coming face-to-face with the man accused of killing his daughter.
'It's very hard for me to sit there and not want to reach over the counter and grab him and basically take his life," he said. "It's what we needed to do. But to know that this person is still on this planet and my daughter's not, and this is the person that supposedly did this, is very hard to swallow.
'He had to figure out Mercedes, what she did, where she was at, where she lived and all that stuff, and there's no way he could have figured that out without somebody helping him."

Her friend, Makenzie Lockhart, also believes more people were involved in the attack.
'You change your pain a little bit,' her mum Erika said during a court appearance by Hayes. 'It changes. It's been a year and a half since she was murdered so horribly. And that was the main, main focus that I would think about all the time before I knew that somebody was going to be held accountable.'

'I don't want any other family being told their child has died'

"I don't want any other family getting the 4am knock on the door, I don't want them being told their child has died," said Keena Entwistle, who lost her son Ethan when the car in which he was a front seat passenger crashed into a tree in Entwistle has been using her experience to educate sixth form students at St George's Church of England Foundation School in Broadstairs about road safety. Ethan was a pupil at the school."If we can stop one crash, if we can stop one injury, one fatality, then Ethan didn't die in vain," she Hyde, director of the school's sixth form, said she was more concerned about the safety of young drivers following Ethan's death. "We were all there at the funeral, we've followed the family the whole way through, so it's nice to come full circle and be able to see that Keena's now able to educate the next generation of drivers," she said."Hopefully we don't have such a close connection and this kind of accident happening again."The driver of the car in which Ethan was a passenger in 2023 admitted causing death by dangerous driving and is due to be sentenced in Entwistle wants to see the introduction of graduated driver licences which would see young drivers forbidden from carrying passengers of a similar age. According to national road safety charity IAM RoadSmart, a fifth of all collisions in 2023 involved a young Entwistle was among a group of bereaved families who met MPs in June to advance the case for graduated driver licences.A spokesperson for the Department for Transport previously said the government was not considering graduated driving licences but recognised "that young people are disproportionately victims of tragic incidents on our roads". 'Scary on the roads' Lacey, 17, is learning to drive and is one of a number of students at the school who support graduated driver licences."I think it's so important that we're mature enough to know what we're being held responsible for and who we're looking after," she student Kaitlyn said the idea of taking to the road as a qualified young driver was "almost daunting"."You could be the safest driver in the world but it's what other people are doing that impacts everything else," she who has just passed his test, said he tried to avoid driving at night."There's a lot of people out on the roads that are speeding they're obviously drunk sometimes as well," he said. "It's quite scary to be out on the roads."He added that he would be more cautious on the roads after hearing Ms Entwistle's story.

Urban hunter sex beast is 'dangerous predator' who should never be released, say victim's family

Sick Brandon Robb was jailed for seven years last month for a series of sex attacks on children in Fife and handed another year in prison last week for a catalogue of vile wildlife offences. An 'urban hunter' jailed for raping children and torturing animals is a 'dangerous predator' who should never be released, according to the family of one his victims. ‌ Sick Brandon Robb was jailed for seven years last month for a series of sex attacks on children in Fife and handed another year in prison last week for a catalogue of vile wildlife offences. ‌ The 28-year-old sparked outrage after he filmed disturbing clips of his dogs ravaging a string of creatures, including a pet cat. ‌ Robb's brutal crimes against animals were exposed just weeks after he was finally convicted for sex attacks on two girls and a boy - the youngest just eight years old - and abusing two women. And now a heartbroken relative of one of Robb's young victims has issued a chilling warning to the public about the brute, who has lodged an appeal against his sex crime convictions. They told the Record: 'Stay away from this man. You don't know how dangerous he really is. Please be aware. 'He gets a thrill out of harming children, women and animals. 'He should be castrated and locked up for life. ‌ 'He has destroyed our family. 'I want the whole world to know what he's capable of. 'He's a danger to the public - to everybody.' ‌ Robb had 12 months added to his prison sentence at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Friday and was banned from keeping animals indefinitely. Video footage retrieved from his phones had shown his two dogs being encouraged to hunt and attack helpless animals over 20 incidents. They included deer, rabbits, hares, a fox cub and wild birds, as well as a domestic cat, over the course of 20 separate incidents. Robb uploaded some of the horrifying footage to social media. ‌ In one disturbing clip, a cat is filmed hanging from a branch, desperately trying to escape one of Robb's dogs. Robb, from Fife, carried out the sickening crimes between August and November 2022 in woods and farmland in Fife and Kinross usually, under cover of darkness. ‌ In one scene, he held up the bloodied body of a domestic cat which had been attacked by the dogs. A vet who analysed the video suggested the cat may have gone into cardiac arrest or suffered a brain injury. Officers later arrested Robb after a search of his home recovered items that included a number of mobile phones, two torches, a pair of binoculars and a scope, a spot lamp and a hunting knife. Just weeks earlier Robb had been jailed for raping and sexually abusing three children in Fife between May 2011 and May 2015, when he was a teenager. He was convicted in February following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. ‌ Jurors heard how Robb raped his first victim on an occasion in 2011 when she was just eight years old after leading her to a secluded area. On various occasions between December 2012 and August 2014, Robb repeatedly raped a 12-year-old girl and subjected the child to a series of sexual assaults. In May 2015, Robb sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy. ‌ He was also convicted of acting in a threatening and abusive manner to two women between 2019 and 2023. Defence advocate Richard Goddard said Robb had a 'chaotic' childhood which affected him as an adult. ‌ He was placed on the sex offenders' register for life and will serve six years on licence after release. Robb's lawyers lodged an intimation of intention to appeal against conviction for the case on Monday. His victims' heartbroken relative said the fiend was in their lives for several years. ‌ They said: 'He put a front on but I just knew there was something not right. When I was around him he made me feel uneasy. 'When it came to light what he'd been doing I felt sick and disgusted. 'If he can treat animals like that and do that to women and children, you need to please stay way from this man or you will end up like my family. It's only a matter of time before he causes a human serious harm. ‌ 'My family are trying to move on but it has been torture.' Detectives probing Robb's sexual offences described him as a 'violent man and sexual predator who preyed on children and abused them'. Robb had previously been jailed in 2014 after admitting to using his pet dog to hunt and kill a rare deer and also admitted stealing 30 ducks at a Fife farm.

System must work to protect public as report finds chances missed with Southport killer

Record View says the public needs a counter-terrorism system that works. The Prevent counter-terrorism scheme should have intervened to halt the Southport killer before he launched his murderous rampage. ‌ A damning report published yesterday found Axel Rudakubana could have been monitored, treated and potentially turned away from violence by the programme. Teachers warned Prevent officials three times that the future killer was obsessed with violence. ‌ Shockingly, on each occasion, his case was closed because he did not seem to have an identifiable terrorist motive. Rudakubana is now serving a life term in prison with a minimum term of 52 years after killing three young girls and injuring 10 others, including two adults. ‌ The report into Prevent found that between 2019 and 2021 teachers referred Rudakubana three times under a national duty to alert police and other agencies to potential extremists. It's clear the UK's security services are not up to speed with the danger of young men who have been radicalised online and want to inflict harm on innocent people. It's hard to see how the public can have faith in Prevent given its catalogue of failings. It's clear government agencies must take more seriously what potential extremists are posting publicly on social media. More often than not, violent maniacs are clear in their intentions and make no effort to hide them. The public needs a counter-terrorism system that works. Prevent is not it. Whip smart Most observers agree both the UK and Scottish Governments have not done enough to prevent the closure of the Grangemouth oil refinery. And Labour MP Brian Leishman has led the charge on trying to get more action to save the plant. Now he has been suspended from the Labour whip at Westminster for refusing to toe the party line on this and other issues. ‌ The closure put him in an extremely difficult position just months after being elected. Despite his inexperience, Leishman has not been scared to stand up for the workers and criticise his own party's government. He rightly said the UK Government would be letting down the workers if the refinery shuts and was brave to call for it to step in and save the plant. He rose to the challenge in a way that many others wouldn't have and deserves to be commended for that. No MP should be punished for trying to prevent a key part of Scotland's infrastructure from shutting down. Labour should restore the whip to Leishman and bring him back into the fold as soon as possible.
