Lorenzo, the giant NY lobster, gets a second chance at life

NEW YORK (PIX11) — A giant lobster with a long history is now making waves in a different way.
Thanks to a special celebration and the big-hearted people behind it, Lorenzo—the 21-pound, 110-year-old lobster—is swimming free once again.

On Thursday, Peter's Clam Bar in Hempstead, Long Island, marked National Lobster Day and Father's Day with a heartfelt gesture: setting Lorenzo free.
Butch Yamali, owner of Peter's Clam Bar, shared how Lorenzo became part of the restaurant's story. 'Lorenzo just kind of slipped through the cracks and ended up in our tank for years,' he said.
Yamali explained that Lorenzo had become a fixture at the establishment.
'Some of these lobsters just don't live that long, and this one did. So we figured what better way to celebrate Father's Day than by freeing Lorenzo. He became like a pet. People would come see him and take pictures with him, and he was just an object of the store.'
The celebration gained official support when Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and Nassau County Legislator John Ferretti joined forces to pardon and release Lorenzo back into the wild.
This event echoes a similar story with Lenny, another giant lobster the restaurant famously freed, continuing a tradition of giving these ancient crustaceans a second chance at life.
When asked if Lorenzo would be missed, Yamali said, 'He's gonna be missed, but I think it's better like this. If he passed away here, it wouldn't be a good thing, and I couldn't have the heart to sell him.'
And just like that, Lorenzo was returned to the Atlantic Beach Reef—back to the open sea, his home once again.

Buffalo's Juneteenth Festival set to celebrate freedom, culture, and resilience this weekend

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — One of the largest Juneteenth celebrations in the country returns to Buffalo this weekend, promising two days of music, food, art and history at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The annual Juneteenth Festival, approaching its 50th anniversary, honors the end of slavery in the United States and highlights the strength and resilience of the Black community. Organizers say this year's celebration is not only about honoring the past but also about building a stronger future. 'We know who we are,' said Carrone Evon Crump, president of the Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo. 'Empowered as a people, we're just as smart and worthy as anybody else. And just to be able to experience that on a holiday, now that it's a federal holiday, it's psychologically empowering.' The festivities begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the annual Juneteenth Parade. The route starts at St. Louis and Genesee streets and leads to the park. The parade, which draws large crowds every year, is a key part of the weekend's events. Organizers say the festival is about creating lasting memories and inspiring future generations. 'It feels full circle,' said Michael Smith, parade co-chair. 'As a kid, I watched the parade, came to the park, enjoyed the culture and the food. Now I have the opportunity, the privilege and the honor to create that same experience for the next generation.' Festivalgoers can expect live performances, local vendors, cultural programming and activities for all ages. For a full schedule of events, click here. Former Lion Nate Burleson pouring his new vodka in metro Detroit over Father's Day weekend

When Nate Burleson was released by the Detroit Lions in 2014, fans questioned what would become of LionBlood Clothing Co., the wide receiver's clothing line centered on the Detroit team's mascot. It's been more than a decade since Burleson's time with the Lions, yet he's maintained the LionBlood Clothing Co. and his sense of Detroit pride, and this weekend, he's expanding the brand with a new venture — LionBlood Vodka. A collaboration with Ferndale distillery Valentine Distilling Co., LionBlood Orange Vodka is a made-in-Michigan, small-batch blend of Valentine vodka infused with notes of blood orange and elderflower. The former NFL star and Emmy Award-winning media personality approached Rifino Valentine, founder and president of Valentine Distilling Co. to create 'a vodka like no other,' according to a news release. "A lion sleeps in the heart of all of us,' Burleson said in the release, again nodding to the Lions' mascot. 'We hunt for what we want in this world, so the time is now. Remember to savor every sip and conquer your jungle.' The collaboration launches just in time for Father's Day, and Burleson, a father of three, is encouraging all dads to join him in metro Detroit for the celebration. Following an 11-year NFL career, the last four seasons with Detroit, Burleson became an analyst for the NFL Network. He joined "The NFL Today" on CBS in 2017 and has been a co-host of "CBS Mornings" since 2021. On Friday, June 13, Burleson will be pouring drinks and mingling with guests for a meet-and-greet at Belle's Lounge in Ferndale from 6-9 p.m. On Saturday, June 14, he'll sign bottles of LionBlood Orange at Kroger in St. Clair Shores from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The events offer an opportunity to enjoy a Michigan-made spirit with a Lions icon and a true champion of Detroit pride.
