Gong drums up Feroz's resolve to recover from painful setback
PETALING JAYA: Feroz Baharudin (pic) was fast becoming the gold standard among Malaysian centrebacks with his commanding displays for Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) on both the domestic and continental stages.
But just as the 25-year-old was reaching new heights, his journey took a painful turn.
In January, Feroz suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, a moment he calls the lowest point of his career.
Yet, as the curtain fell on the season, Feroz has found light amid the darkness, winning the best defender award at the Malaysian Football Awards on April 24.
Emotionally charged and humbled by the honour, Feroz admitted the accolade was bittersweet.
'Deep down, I'm truly grateful for this recognition. But I'm happy and sad at the same time,' said Feroz.
'Suffering an ACL injury was the saddest thing that has ever happened to me. But to end the season with an award like this? I'm thankful to everyone who prayed for me.'
Feroz was a mainstay in JDT's three-man backline under coach Hector Bidoglio before the injury struck, showcasing maturity and intelligence far beyond his years.
In the Super League, he started 13 matches and was a standout in ball recoveries, averaging nine per game – a testament to his excellent reading of the game and positional sense.
His continental credentials were also on display in the AFC Champions League Elite, where he featured in two matches and netted once.
In the Malaysia Cup, which JDT won on Saturday, Feroz made only two appearances but he played five times and scored twice in the FA Cup – a competition which the Southern Tigers also ruled in a season where they completed a third straight quadruple.
Though sidelined for the second half of the season, Feroz's impact was undeniable, and the award serves as recognition for his early-season excellence.
'This has been my best season so far. Unfortunately, midway through, luck deserted me. But this award will drive me to come back stronger. My goal is to bring pride to the nation and my club.'
As Feroz works his way back to full fitness ahead of the 2025-2026 season, there is little doubt he will return with even more hunger, ready to reclaim his place as one of Malaysia's finest defenders.

Thinaah's trademark that saved their day — their famed fighting spirit. he world No. 4 Malaysian pair made a spectacular comeback in the Indonesia Open semi-final in Jakarta today, battling from a game down to beat China's world No. 6 Li Yi Jing-Luo Xu Min 12-21, 21-17, 21-11. For that, they were rewarded with their first ever Super 1000 final in their careers. Pearly-Thinaah will meet either China's world No. 1 Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning or South Korean world No. 3 Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee in the title decider tomorrow. Despite playing their fourth consecutive World Tour tournament, the Malaysian duo refused to let weariness get in the way. The 65-minute battle was indeed a testament of the grit and maturity that Pearly-Thinaah are known for. "Words can't describe how happy we are today. At one game down, we didn't want to give up easily," said Thinaah. "Today, it was not just about strategy but mental and physical strength and I am really thankful that Pearly was by my side. She smashed a lot. "We just have to be relaxed and maintain our calm, which gives us strength, in the final tomorrow." Pearly said that there was no particular moment where the tide turned although the Chinese pair had been dominant early in the match. "There were some trick shots and we enjoyed those points." The energy-sapping sequence for Pearly-Thinaah began four weeks ago at the Thailand Open where they captured the Super 500 crown. This was followed by a semi-final appearance at the Malaysia Masters and the duo reached the last eight at the Singapore Open last week. The faster and younger Yi Jing (23) and Xup Min (22) set the pace to run away with a 21-12 win in the first game but Pearly, 25, and Thinaah, 27, began their customary fightback after that and ended the contest with a flourish.

Machucha missed birth of first child to be with Malaysian team ahead of Vietnam clash
Latest Malaysian footballer Imanol Machuca. PETALING JAYA: The country comes first rather than family for mixed heritage footballer Imanol Machuca. The 25-year-old missed the birth of his first born baby boy back in Argentina in order to be with the national football team for the all-important 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier against Vietnam on Tuesday. His wife Ailen Bernardi, a personal trainer, gave birth at the start of the week but Imanol was already on board the plane on a 30-hour journey from Roldan. "My beautiful baby boy," Machuca announced on his Instagram. And Machuca certainly has all the motivation he needs to help Malaysia end their long winless drought against Vietnam. Machuca, a winger who plays for Velez Sarsfield on loan from Brazilian side Fortaleza, is one of the five Malaysians abroad who joined the national team led by Australian coach Peter Cklamovski earlier this week. The others are strikers Joao Figueiredo and Rodrigo Holgado; and defenders Jon Iranzabal and Facundo Garces. "Malaysia have given all the best to me since I arrived to join the training camp earlier in the week. "I genuinely feel it is something special to represent the Harimau Malaya.
