Search for Shakedown bikers who 'flouted safety'
After a three-year break, the Southend Shakedown - which attracts hundreds of bikers - returned to the city in April.
Essex Police and the city's council have praised most riders who went to the Easter Monday rally, but the force has appealed for help to trace those spotted acting dangerously.
"If these riders act this way when they attend a popular public event, I have grave concerns as to how they behave on the road on a day-to-day basis," said Adam Pipe, head of roads policing.
He added: "The overwhelming majority of bikers who took part in the Southend Shakedown did so responsibly – but we cannot ignore those who flouted road safety.
"In 2025 alone, we've seen the tragic loss of more than 20 lives [on the roads].
"That number is heartbreaking, and we're determined to do all we can to stop more lives being lost."
At the Shakedown, officers spotted 23 illegal, obscured or missing number plates and dealt with one "fail to stop" incident.
The force said there were two careless riding incidents, and five riders without insurance.
There were four seizures under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, as well as one seizure for antisocial driving.
Police also dealt with untaxed vehicles, dangerous tyres, invalid MOTs, two minor collisions and criminal damage.
After reviewing footage, officers identified 16 additional incidents of dangerous driving.
Essex Police said it was hoping to track down those involved and urged anyone with information to contact them.
Daniel Cowan, the Labour leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, said: "We want Shakedown to have a positive future in Southend, and that means keeping everyone safe and setting the right example for the years ahead."
He added: "The return of Shakedown was a huge success.
"Thousands of people came to Southend, families enjoyed the day, and seafront traders reported a welcome boost in business."

More than 100 migrants in one vessel thought to have bumped crossings to 27,799
A vessel carrying more than 100 migrants is thought to have helped bring the number of small boat arrivals to 27,799 this year. Home Office figures show 325 migrants crossed the English Channel by small boat on Wednesday, in the same week that the number of arrivals since Labour won the election hit 50,000. The PA news agency understands that 106 people attempted the crossing between France and the Kent coast on a single boat. A total of 51,041 migrants have been detected crossing the Channel since Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer entered No 10 on July 5 last year. A former home secretary has said that the figure 'demonstrates the way over the last six or seven years that the criminal gangs have got an absolute foothold in the tragic trafficking of people across the Channel'. Baroness Jacqui Smith of Malvern, who is now an education and women and equalities minister, told BBC Breakfast on Monday: 'It is an unacceptable number of people.' Speaking on the Isle of Wight this week, Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said: 'My team are now looking at what we can do in terms of detention centres, but stopping people from coming here in the first place – if they think they're going to be sent to Rwanda and not get here, get a free hotel, get benefits, then they won't come here.' Asked if her party could reduce the five-figure numbers to zero if it was in power, Mrs Badenoch said she thought 'it wouldn't happen straight away, but it would happen quickly'.

When and Where Does Crime Happen? At Home, After Midnight
Crime fell in the US in 2024. This was not exactly news when the Federal Bureau of Investigation disclosed it in its annual crime report last week — the Major Cities Chiefs Association, Real-Time Crime Index and Council on Criminal Justice released data months ago showing almost every category of crime down in 2024 in the cities they track, and they have put out subsequent reports showing continued declines in 2025. Still, it was nice to see the FBI's annual report (1) arriving earlier than in past years and (2) again covering more than 95% of the US population as it had before a botched switchover to a new reporting system led to a collapse in 2021 in the share of law-enforcement agencies that sent in data. That new National Incident-Based Reporting System (which is up to 87.2% population coverage, with about 2,000 mostly smaller agencies still using the old summary reporting system) is also beginning to deliver on its promise of providing much more detailed information about crime in the US.

Buffalo Wild Wings worker made high schooler ‘prove' she's a girl, activists say
An 18-year-old high schooler was forced by a Buffalo Wild Wings worker to 'prove' she is a girl inside the women's restroom of the Minnesota restaurant, according to a non-profit. Gender Justice, a nonprofit organization that focuses on gender equity law, has now filed a discrimination charge with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights on behalf of Gerika Mudra. 'What happened to Gerika Mudra was not just wrong, it was unlawful,' Sara Jan Baldwin, senior staff attorney at Gender Justice, said in a statement. Mudra was at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Owatonna on Easter when she was followed into the restroom by a server, according to Gender Justice. The employee banged on her stall door and told Mudra she had to 'prove' she was a girl. The nonprofit said the worker blocked the exit and made Mudra unzip her hoodie to show she had breasts. Mudra complied in an encounter that left her mortified. Mudra is not transgender but said the incident is not the first encounter she has had over her gender. This one, however, was the worst, she said. 'She made me feel very uncomfortable,' Mudra said. 'After that, I just don't like going in public bathrooms. I just hold it in.' McClatchy News reached out to Buffalo Wild Wings on Aug. 13 and was awaiting a response. Shauna Otterness, Mudra's stepmother, said in a news release she believes her stepdaughter was 'targeted because of how she looks.' But in Minnesota, it is illegal for public accomodations to discriminate on the basis of 'gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, sex, or race.' Megan Peterson, executive director at Gender Justice, said the incident involving Mudra is 'nothing new.' 'And yet, in our current climate we have to ask: What if Gerika had been a trans person?' Peterson said. 'Would this story have ended differently? That's the terrifying reality too many trans people live with every day.' Gender Justice said Mudra's experience from Buffalo Wild Wings is one that transgender and gender-nonconforming people deal with often. 'I want people to know they're not alone. They're not the only people this happens to,' Mudra said. 'It's OK to stick up for yourselves and be who you are.
