'Botched' restoration to church Virgin Mary statue sparks huge protests from furious worshippers in Spain
The restoration of an iconic 17th century statue of the Virgin Mary has sparked huge protests in Seville after worshippers said her makeover left her looking like she had undergone plastic surgery.
The Virgin of La Macarena is one of Spain 's most famed Catholic effigies, and many Spaniards travel south every year to catch a glimpse of the wooden figure during the city's Holy Week parades.
So when the Brotherhood of the Macarena unveiled the surprise restoration over the weekend, her devotees were outraged, with critics saying she had been disfigured.
According to her worshippers, her face was given a glossier finish, while her eye lashes were made longer, which they say altered her gaze.
'Her facial expression has completely changed,' one outraged worshipper told Spanish newspaper El Pais. 'It pains me deeply to say it, but she looks like a poor copy of the original.'
Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Basilica de la Macarena on Monday calling for the resignation of the brotherhood's leader.
Footage shows faithful gathered round the church singing hymns about the Virgin as they demanded answers.
'This isn't her; this isn't the Virgin of Seville. It's sad. My heart is about to burst out,' one protester told ABC newspaper. 'They should have left her as she was.'
Such has been the outrage that the statue is reported to have undergone two more restorations in less than 24 hours to get her back to her original state.
The brotherhood issued an apology and closed the basilica over the weekend, and the Virgin has since emerged with shortened eyelashes after efforts to correct an 'undesired effect.'
The religious icon's controversial makeover has been likened to the botched art restoration of a painting of Jesus Christ, which resulted in the painting being dubbed: 'Monkey Christ'.
In 2012, Cecilia Giménez, 82, decided to touch up the 'Ecce Homo' (Behold The Man) fresco in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy church in Borja, northern Spain.
However, her brushwork completely obliterated the face of Jesus transforming the painting into what locals described as more like a hedgehog or hairy monkey rather than Jesus.
It also comes after a Polish village was outraged earlier this year after a botched renovation of a 1820 shrine of Jesus and the Virgin Mary left the Blessed Mother looking like a 'Simpsons' cartoon character.
Once described by experts as 'tall and slender', the Virgin Mary statue just outside the village of Stuszionka now has oversized mitten-like hands, exaggerated eyes and a crooked frown accentuated by bright red lipstick.
The figure of Jesus, meanwhile, appears to be wearing grey underpants, and both figures have been repainted with an unnatural yellow hue.
Posting a photo on Facebook, the Conservator of Monuments said: 'A rather rare depiction of the Virgin Mary looking upwards.
'Another example of good intentions... Let's hope that in the near future this valuable object will receive professional conservation, because it deserves it very much.'
It added that the unknown restorer had also painted over the shrine's original German inscription, replacing it with the markings 'VII 2024, JC 2,' written in what appears to be a black marker pen.
Locals vented their fury with the botch job, with some describing it as 'desecration'.
Posting on social media, one outraged viewer said: 'The times of the greatest barbarity and ignorance of Spirit and Reason have come.'
Another commented: 'I would take a risk and notify the prosecutor's office about offending religious feelings. Because this is nothing more than an example of desecrating an object of religious worship.'
'It looks more like Bart Simpson than The Mother Mary,' said another.

Coleen Rooney shows off her Ibiza tan in a colourful crochet bikini as she enjoys beach day with Wayne and fellow WAG Lisa Carrick
Coleen Rooney is enjoying a sunshine break with pals on party isle Ibiza, showing off her incredible physique in a bikini wardrobe. The I'm A Celeb star, 39, looked gorgeous in a colourful crochet bikini as she hit the beach on Monday with husband Wayne and their long-time friends Michael and Lisa Carrick. The WAG flaunted her toned and tanned figure in the skimpy swimwear which she paired with Miu Miu shades. Mum of four Coleen cooled down with a dip in the sea with Lisa, who looked gorgeous in a burgundy bandeau bikini. Coleen and Lisa have been close friends and holiday companions since their husbands were Manchester United teammates. Meanwhile Wayne, looking casual in a white t-shirt and blue cap, was spotted happily chatting to Michael and Lisa whilst enjoying a crisp glass of white wine on the beach. Their holiday comes hot on the heels of Coleen's rival Rebekah Vardy speaking out on their Wagatha Christie drama. She has claimed she faced 'more scrutiny than murderers and paedophiles' amid the court case. In 2019, the WAG was publicly accused of leaking stories about Coleen to The Sun newspaper, which she furiously denied, resulting in a high profile court battle. Rebekah, 43, suffered further humiliation when she lost her libel case and in a fresh blow last month she was ordered to pay £1,190,000 of Coleen's legal bills. And earlier this month the mother-of-five has claimed the backlash towards her was disproportionate and has continued to protest her innocence. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Rebekah insisted: 'I didn't sell stories to The Sun newspaper and that really is the end of it'. Claiming that she 'got the raw end of that', she continued: 'In fact, I think murderers and paedophiles have faced far less scrutiny than I did.' Yet Rebekah noted that now she's 'at peace' and is looking forward, in particular, to an upcoming Netflix documentary about husband Jamie. She also revealed that she is still in touch with Caroline Watt - her former agent - who she claimed was responsible for leaking the stories behind her back. Caroline was also the owner of a mobile phone filled with evidence that ended up at the bottom of the North Sea - or 'Davy Jones's locker' as it was famously dubbed in court. Rebekah claimed that Coleen's legal team had been 'unfair and completely unjust' in serving paperwork to Caroline's home rather than through her lawyers and that Caroline had been through 'considerable anguish'. Caroline did not testify during the trial, after being deemed 'not fit to provide oral evidence', and is yet to provide comment on the matter. When told that fans would be keen to hear Caroline's side of story, Rebekah mused: 'Well, maybe there's a different version of that completely.' Last month, the six-year legal battle finally came to an end when Rebekah agreed to pay £1,190,000 of Coleen's legal bill, plus was ordered to pay a further £212,266 in assessment costs, after sensationally losing their high-profile libel case. This takes the total Rebekah must pay to at least £1,402,266.20. MailOnline understands she has already paid some of the bill, including £800,000 four years ago and £100,000 last year. Coleen must also pay Rebekah a total of £135,097.50 in costs under the terms of court orders from 2024, which will be set off against what Rebekah must pay. A source close to Rebekah told MailOnline: 'It's a huge relief for Rebekah that this long legal battle is now coming to an end. 'She's looking forward to putting the whole ordeal well and truly behind her. 'Now she's just focusing on the future. And there are some big plans coming up for her now that she just wants to get cracking with.'
