Madras High Court restrains Tamil Nadu from naming schemes after MK Stalin

India Today4 days ago
The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government not to use the name of the Chief Minister or his photograph in publicity material related to government welfare schemes, pulling up the DMK administration over its choice of nomenclature for publicly funded initiatives. The court was hearing a petition filed by AIADMK MP CV Shanmugam, who sought a ban on the use of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's image and the name 'Ungaludan Stalin' (translated as 'Stalin with You') in government schemes and their advertisements.advertisementThe petitioner contended that naming the scheme after the incumbent Chief Minister was in violation of Supreme Court rulings and the Government Advertisement (Content Regulation) Guidelines, 2014.
Citing schemes such as 'Ungaludan Stalin' and 'Nalam Kaakum Stalin Thittam', which carry the Chief Minister's name, the petition argued that such branding created undue political mileage at the expense of the public exchequer.'Mentioning the name of the incumbent Chief Minister in the nomenclature of the scheme and all such pictorial representations is in violation of various judicial pronouncements of the Hon'ble Supreme Court as also violative of Government Advertisement (Content Regulation) Guidelines, 2014,' the petition stated.Appearing on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP P Wilson termed the petition politically motivated and ill-founded, aimed at tarnishing the image of the ruling party and its leadership. He questioned the selective targeting of the scheme's name, asking, 'When government schemes have been named after NaMo (a reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi) and Amma (used for former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa), why can't there also be Ungaludan Stalin?'The High Court clarified that it was not issuing an order against the implementation of the schemes themselves but only objected to their nomenclature and promotional content that included names or images of living personalities. The court observed that government welfare initiatives funded by public money should remain politically neutral in presentation.- Ends

Cleared by Telangana Cabinet, Ghose panel report to be tabled in Assembly

'Ex-CM ignored expert warnings, plunging state into `84K crore debt' Meanwhile, at a press conference at the Secretariat, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy presented the findings of the Commission. He held KCR responsible for bypassing rules, ignoring expert warnings, and plunging the state into high-interest debt of `84,000 crore. 'As promised during elections, the government formed an inquiry commission on March 1, 2024, headed by retired Supreme Court judge and ex-Lokpal, Justice PC Ghose. Over nearly 16 months, the Commission collected information from the former chief minister, ministers, public representatives, IAS officers, and others. The Commission also summoned KCR, Harish Rao and Eatala Rajender, served them notices, and recorded their statements. After analysing all the information and statements, on July 31, 2025, the Commission submitted its 660-page report to the government,' Revanth explained. 'We had promised the people that a judicial inquiry would be ordered into the Medigadda barrage collapse. After coming to power, we formed a Commission headed by Justice Ghose, and now that report has been submitted,' Uttam said. 'It clearly says KCR acted not as chief minister but as an administrative head, issuing direct orders that bypassed institutional processes,' He added. Quoting from the report, he said: 'The Commission held that there was rank irregularity from the stage of conceptualisation of the project till the administrative approvals on March 1, 2016. These decisions were not those of the government, but of individuals.' Uttam said the decision to shift the barrage from Tummidihatti to Medigadda was taken solely by KCR, under the false pretext of water unavailability. 'The report says the reason for abandoning Tummidihatti does not appear sincere or honest,' he added. He recalled that even the then Union minister Uma Bharti had confirmed water availability at Tummidihatti, and the Central Water Commission (CWC) had approved the hydrology of the Pranahita-Chevella project in October 2014. 'But the KCR government wrote to the Centre saying there was no water, and that misrepresentation was found to be malicious by the Commission,' he said.

'Unwarranted observation': INDIA bloc backs Rahul Gandhi on SC rap; calls it his duty to speak on national issues

NEW DELHI: INDIA bloc on Tuesday strongly objected to the Supreme Court's observations against leader of opposition, Rahul Gandhi, calling them "extraordinary and unwarranted". The remarks came after a day after the Supreme Court censured Rahul over his alleged derogatory comments about the Indian Army, made during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. "All the leaders of the India parties agreed that the sitting judge has made an extraordinary observation which is unwarranted on the democratic rights of political parties," the Congress said in a statement, following a meeting attended by several INDIA bloc leaders. In a joint response, the alliance stood firmly behind Rahul, asserting that his role as leader of opposition gives him the right and duty to question the government. "It is the responsibility of political parties, especially the leader of opposition to comment on issues of national interest," the statement said. "When a government fails so spectacularly to defend our borders, it is every citizen's moral duty to hold it accountable," it added. This comes after the floor leaders of several INDIA bloc parties met in Delhi to discuss the SC's recent remarks against Rahul . The meeting was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi himself. Rahul had earlier said the Chinese army was "thrashing" Indian soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh, and that the media wouldn't question it." "People will ask about Bharat Jodo Yatra... but they will not ask a single question about China capturing 2,000sq km of Indian land, killing 20 Indian soldiers, and thrashing our soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh... Don't pretend people don't know," he added. Congress leader Priyanka Rahul Vadra defended her brother saying, Rahul deeply respects the Indian security forces and, as leader of opposition, has the right to question the government. Speaking to reporters at the Parliament House complex, she said, "With due respect to the honourable judges of the Supreme Court, they do not decide who is a true Indian. It is the job of the opposition leader, it is his duty to ask questions and to challenge the government." "My brother would never say anything against the Army. He holds the Army in the highest respect. So it is a misinterpretation (of his remarks)," she added. The top court on Monday put a hold on the criminal defamation case filed against Rahul concerning his alleged comments about the army in relation to the 2020 Galwan Valley clash with China. Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih questioned Rahul, "You are the leader of opposition. Why don't you say things in Parliament, why do you have to say it on social media?" The bench additionally enquired, "Why do you make these statements without having any material? If you are a true Indian, you won't say such a thing." The SC also remarked on how he knew about the area being captured by the Chinese army. Was he there? ... This is not the first time that Rahul Gandhi has shown an anti-India mentality." Reacting to the Supreme Court's remarks against Rahul over his alleged comments, Kiren Rijiju earlier slammed Rahul on X, saying, :"Supreme Court has given shri Rahul Rahul ji a tough message & lesson! If he does not even listen to the words of India's Supreme Court, how can others keep control over his useless talks?"

Reveal ‘secret' to scrap NEET exam or admit you lied to voters: EPS slams DMK

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) has questioned the ruling DMK over its unfulfilled poll promise of scrapping the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), asking why the party has not taken action despite making repeated assurances during the election a gathering in Thirunelveli district, EPS recalled that DMK leaders had assured the people that the very first act, upon assuming power, would be the cancellation of NEET. 'During the election, the DMK leader said that the first signature would be to cancel NEET,' he AIADMK leader also referred to statements made by Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in the run-up to the election. 'Udhayanidhi Stalin said that there is a secret to cancel NEET. Tell us the secret, Udhayanidhi Stalin. Tell their secret at least now. Let the people know,' EPS said. This is not the first instance of EPS raising the issue. In March 2025, he had demanded that Chief Minister MK Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin reveal the 'secret' they had claimed would help cancel NEET. At the time, he had urged them to take responsibility for preventing further student suicides related to the exam. EPS had also accused the ruling DMK of misleading students by creating false hopes about cancelling NEET. He had reminded the public that ahead of the 2021 Assembly election, the DMK had promised to abolish NEET and that Udhayanidhi Stalin had claimed the party possessed a 'secret' to do so. 'The #Daddy_son should immediately disclose that NEET secret. If that is not done, they should admit the truth that the DMK lied,' EPS had posted on X, calling for urgent action. - Ends IN THIS STORY#Tamil Nadu
