Iraq completes GPS system for 28,000 fuel tankers

Shafaq News06-04-2025

Shafaq News/ Iraq's Oil Products Distribution Company completed a nationwide project to link more than 28,000 government and private fuel tankers to a GPRS-based tracking system, the company announced on Sunday.
The Director General Hussein Aboud explained that the system enables electronic and security oversight of fuel tanker movements around the clock, significantly reducing smuggling and unauthorized trade, noting that the system is connected to a centralized data center, allowing authorities to review movement records and stoppages as needed.
Earlier, the head of the company's inspection authority Alaa Adnan stated that the company 'is committed to adopting modern technologies in oversight operations, adding that the GPRS system is already yielding positive results in limiting manipulation and ensuring fuel reaches legitimate recipients.
Notably, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) refers to a wireless communication technology that enables real-time data transmission and tracking. It is often used for monitoring the movement and location of oil tankers, ensuring efficient logistics and security.

Gold heads for weekly loss as dollar ticks higher, US inflation report in focus

Shafaq News/ Gold prices fell on Friday and were headed for weekly loss amid a slight uptick in dollar, while investors awaited a key U.S. inflation report that may provide further insight into the Federal Reserve's policy trajectory. Spot gold was down 0.4% at $3,303.51 an ounce, as of 0601 GMT. Bullion is down 1.6% so far this week. U.S. gold futures fell 0.5% to $3,300.70. The dollar index (.DXY), opens new tab rose 0.2%, making gold more expensive for overseas buyers. 'Gold prices are more or less consolidating at this point of time,' said Brian Lan, managing director at GoldSilver Central, Singapore. 'What we see is that these are normal market occurrences just at the range now is slightly wider mainly due to the confidence in the U.S. dollar.' The U.S. personal consumption expenditures (PCE) report, the Fed's preferred inflation measure, is due at 1230 GMT and is likely to show that inflation rose 2.2% in April, according to economists polled by Reuters, compared with a 2.3% increase in March. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly said on Thursday that policymakers could still reduce rates twice this year, but rates should remain steady for now to ensure inflation is on track to reach the central bank's 2% goal. Non-yielding bullion tends to benefit in low-interest-rate environments. Meanwhile, a federal appeals court temporarily reinstated President Donald Trump's most extensive tariffs on Thursday, following a U.S. trade court's ruling on Wednesday that Trump had overstepped his authority by imposing these duties and subsequently ordered an immediate halt. Physical gold demand in India was subdued this week, as an uptick in domestic prices and the wedding season winding up kept buyers at bay, while premiums slipped in top consumer China. Spot silver fell 0.7% to $33.1 an ounce, platinum was down 0.6% to $1,076.33 and palladium dropped 0.5% to $968.79.

Oil set for second weekly decline as market eyes another OPEC+ output hike

Shafaq News/ Oil prices were on track for a second consecutive weekly decline on Friday, weighed down by expectations of another OPEC+ output hike in July and fresh uncertainty after the latest legal twist kept U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs in place. Brent crude futures slipped 31 cents, or 0.48%, to $63.84 a barrel by 0424 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 31 cents, or 0.51%, to $60.63 a barrel. The Brent July futures contract is due to expire on Friday. Both contracts have fallen 1.5% so far this week. The downward trajectory largely stemmed from the prospect of rising supplies as investors priced in another hike by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, a group known as OPEC+, when eight of its members meet on Saturday. "The stage is set for another bumper production increase," Westpac's head of commodity and carbon research Robert Rennie said in a note, potentially higher than the 411,000 barrels per day hike decided on at the previous two meetings. The potential hike comes as the global surplus has widened to 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd), likely necessitating a price adjustment to prompt a supply-side response and restore balance, said JPMorgan analysts in a note. They expect prices to remain within current ranges before easing into the high $50s by year-end. In the U.S., Trump's tariffs were to remain in effect after a federal appeals court temporarily reinstated them on Thursday, reversing a trade court's decision on Wednesday to put an immediate block on the most sweeping of the duties. The block had sent oil prices falling more than 1% on Thursday as traders weighed its effects. Analysts said uncertainty would remain as the tariff battles worked their way. Oil prices have lost more than 10% since Trump announced his "Liberation Day" tariffs on April 2. On the demand front, recession worries fuelled by the tariff war have clouded the outlook. Adding to U.S.-China trade tension, Washington ordered a broad swathe of companies to stop shipping goods, including ethane and butane, to China without a license and revoked licenses already granted to certain suppliers. Global oil demand improved from the previous week, driven by a rebound in U.S. oil consumption with robust travel over the Memorial Day long weekend, JPMorgan analysts noted. That said, the monthly expansion in global oil demand is tracking at approximately 400,000 bpd as of May 28, 250,000 bpd below expectations, they said.
