Dutch test for Scots hockey women ahead of Euros
Several of his squad are in the Great Britain set-up and have played the Dutch, but others have not, but Scotland head coach, Chris Duncan looks forward to the test.
The match is in Monchengladbach, the venue for the Euro championships which begin for the Tartan Hearts, ranked No 15 in the world, on Sunday when they square-up to England, ranked No 8, in their opener at 9.15am.
Then, just over 24-hours later, Scotland face Spain (12.30), ranked No 7 in the world, a match which has a particular twist as the Scots edged Spain 2-1 two years ago in the last competition also held in Monchengladbach.
Their final pool game is on Wednesday, August 13 against Belgium (11.15), a country rated no 3 in the world, before the cross-over ties which decide the finishing positions in the tournament.
Duncan, now based in West Lothian, said that his squad as prepared well for the competition in which several players – Sarah Jamieson, Jen Eadie, Fiona Burnet and Millie Steiger – will reach significant milestones in their careers.
The party touched down in Dusseldorf on Wednesday night and head coach Duncan said his players were, generally, used to preparing for big tournaments like this one.
He added: 'We are used to the tournament scenario, and, from a staff perspective, we are pretty diligent in our preparation, we have done our homework on all three sides we are going to play, but all our narrative is focused on game No 1 in the tournament and getting off to a good start.
'We have done some work during the last few weeks on the other teams, apart from England, but, in the next few days it is all about what we can do in game No 1 and what we can do against England.'
He added: 'We are also used to the different weather in Europe. We have processes we have here at home to make sure that we land on the ground, but there is no way of replicating European summer.
'We would, I presume, all wish that a Scottish summer would be a bit warmer, but we have done diligent work in saunas and with clothing and with heat preparation in the last few weeks to ensure we are as ready as we can be.'
Duncan has been keeping a close eye on the thermometer and it has been showing lower temperatures than his players have experienced in the past in tournaments in Europe and one which they experienced in Chile in the Nations Cup a few months ago.
The venue is also not new to most of the current Scotland squad, and that is a bonus according to the coach who said: 'That brings with it a lot of calmness in terms of planning.
'We know what we are going to, we know what the surroundings are and we know what not to expect and what to expect. That has really helped us in our planning phase, in terms of knowing where we are staying and where we can eat, so we feel pretty settled.
'The other thing that we know is that the tournament is going to be really hard, we are playing against some of the world's top teams. It will be difficult, but the reason we train is to test ourselves against the best.'
With that in mind, Duncan said there was no better way of preparing for this tournament than to be playing the best team in the world in a friendly game before a hard training session on Friday and then a light session on Saturday.
He added: 'Everybody has done the work off the pitch and everyone has a shared understanding of what they want to achieve when they walk out onto the pitch and also what our plans are from a tactical perspective, the way that we want to play the game.
'Overall, every time we go on the pitch we want to show the world what we are capable of and show the developments we have made. We also want to try and imprint our style against the opposition and the next few days are an opportunity to sharpen the squad ahead of Sunday morning.'

Ollie Watkins saga takes fresh twist as Aston Villa confirm transfer decision
Ollie Watkins has attracted interest from across the Premier League, with Aston Villa reluctant to sell the England star before managing to source a replacement Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Evann Guessand - prompting further questions over the future of Ollie Watkins. A number of Premier League clubs have explored the prospect of landing England striker Watkins this summer, but any move was thought to be off the table without a replacement in place. Ivorian international Guessand could end up being that replacement. The 24-year-old, who can play across the front line, has joined from Nice in a deal worth around £26million. He scored 12 goals in Ligue 1 last season, adding nine assists, and also scored once in the Europa League. Explaining his decision to join Villa, the Corsica-born frontman pointed to the influence of manager Unai Emery. 'I was watching the games of Aston Villa in the last seasons, and after that we started talking with the coach," Guessand told club media. 'To be honest, our talks were the main point, because he really is the person who convinced me to come here, and of course we know the career of this coach. 'A long time ago, I saw him in the French league, and he's known for the way he used to improve the players he used to work with, so I was thinking about this. I'm a young player and I want to improve. I have many qualities that can improve, so when I spoke with the coach, I (knew) this is the right coach for me to become better and better.' Arsenal were linked with Watkins back in January but have since turned their attentions to other targets, with Viktor Gyokeres joining for north of £60m. Manchester United have also appeared keen, but are now poised to bring Benjamin Sesko to Old Trafford. One of those clubs could yet decide Watkins is still useful to them, though, while Newcastle remains an option. The Magpies are closing in on Yoane Wissa, according to Sky Sports, but could push for a second attacking addition with Callum Wilson joining West Ham and Alexander Isak potentially still in line for a Liverpool switch. Guessand is Villa's fourth summer signing of the window. Young Dutch forward Zepiqueno Redmond has joined from Feyenoord, with Emery's side also adding goalkeeper Marco Bizot and centre-back Yasin Ozcan - though the Turkish international has immediately headed to Anderlecht on loan. A number of fringe players have left, either permanently or on loan, while failure to qualify for the Champions League has left Villa unable to clinch permanent deals for last season's loanees Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio. Rashford has now joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United, while Asensio is back at parent club Paris Saint-Germain - for now, at least.

Russell Martin teases next Rangers signing as boss makes it crystal clear what transfer targets must have
It's been a busy summer for the Ibrox boss in the market but he's not done yet In recent years Rangers players have never had a problem raising their game for big European nights. The real issue has been lifting themselves for the bread and butter of the Scottish Premiership. And new boss Russell Martin is about to find out whether it's still a matter for concern. On Tuesday night, his team produced a terrific display to batter Czech side Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in their Champions League qualifying first-leg. Now, Martin's men have to replicate it on Saturday against a Dundee outfit who look like they're destined for a campaign of toil in the top flight. Rangers failed to pick up three points in their league opener at Motherwell last week which prompted Martin to question their attitude. He doesn't want a repeat of their Fir Park performance against the Dark Blues as he looks to build a winning machine at Ibrox. Martin knows mentality HAS been a problem at Gers in the past but he's adamant that getting the right characters into the club can change it. He said: 'From Saturday to Tuesday, there was a lot of improvement so we have to reinforce the good stuff. 'But it's also our job to be really demanding so they understand there's still a lot we can do better. 'On the pitch, they'd have felt certain things on Tuesday. When they watch it back, it becomes even clearer. 'They're building relationships. We're trying to build something that will be sustainable - and looks like us all the time. 'Tuesday was definitely a step towards that but now the challenge is to do it again. 'In terms of our work, it's exactly the same for Dundee as it was on Tuesday night. 'At this club, every game should be treated in the same way because every team you play is desperate to beat us. "We have to be ready for that and make sure, in every game, we play it on our terms as much as we can. 'The game has to be the way we want it to be. The lads did that on Tuesday night but the challenge is to do it again on Saturday. 'We have to get to a point where we dominate at Ibrox against anyone and everyone. But you don't just get given that, you have to earn it. 'You have to earn respect and a bit of fear. We certainly do. Because against Motherwell we didn't scare them enough. 'We didn't earn the right to do it our way. You earn that by being aggressive, on the front foot and really brave on the ball. 'On Tuesday we did all of those things. We earned the dominance we had in the game and we need to do that again on Saturday.' Martin is still on the hunt for new players, despite already adding eight new faces to his squad. He says he'll always look at someone's attitude over their ability. And he's hinted that he's now keen to add an experienced leader to the group at Ibrox. He said: 'It's always character before talent. We knew Joe Rothwell. We know and trust Max Aarons. 'With Nasser Djiga, we had brilliant references. You make sure you have that character reference first, that's really important. 'You need a level of talent to even be watched before entering this building. But it's then about character and what you're going to add. 'That's the most important bit - but the hardest bit to look at just from watching someone play. We want to make sure we're bringing in the right players for us and the group. 'The culture of this club and team needed to improve. 'The habits and mentality had to improve and character certainly helps that. We'll definitely keep looking for that and maybe an experienced body would help the guys in big moments. If you can find the right one, in that sense, great.' Martin was delighted with his latest signing - Finnish winger Oliver Antman - against Plzen in midweek. The £4million wide man arrived from Go Ahead Eagles and was immediately thrown in for his debut in less than 24 hours. Antman responded by winning a penalty for Rangers and providing a brilliant assist for Djeidi Gassama. But Martin didn't expect anything less from the highly-rated Finn. He said: 'Oliver came highly recommended and we watched him a lot. We spoke to a lot of people who have either played with him or worked with him. 'They all said the same thing - they just didn't see it being a problem for him here because of his mentality. I was really pleased with what he did. He's a confident boy but in a nice way. 'You need that here. There's no time for a dip, he has to carry on now. He really set down a standard early on that he has to maintain. 'We have to push them to keep doing it. It's about consistency in behaviour, effort and performance. If we get that, we'll keep improving.'

Ruben Amorim urged to block £30m transfer and hold crunch talks after Benjamin Sesko deal
Dimitar Berbatov believes Benjamin Sesko 's arrival at Manchester United provides the competition Ruben Amorim should desire with Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish striker endured a lacklustre season with the Red Devils last term, scoring just four Premier League goals. As a result, Ruben Amorim has wasted very little time in bolstering his front line this summer, securing the services of Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a £62.5million move, and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford in a package worth up to £71m. However, it now appears as though United will see RB Leipzig sensation Sesko also join the ranks at Old Trafford. The 22-year-old has been a highly sought-after prospect this summer as a result of impressing in the Bundesliga, with the Red Devils and Newcastle United embroiled in a tug-of-war for his signature. And it now appears as though United have walked away victorious in their pursuit, with Sesko landing in the UK for a medical on Friday after a deal totalling £73.7m was agreed. And as a result, Hojlund will now have stiff competition for his place. It's something that Berbatov, who scored 56 goals and provided 27 assists during his time under Sir Alex Ferguson between 2008 and 2012, believes may allow the youngster to flourish if he adopts the right mentality. Speaking exclusively to Mirror Football about what the arrival of Sesko means, the LiveScore and LiveScore Bet European Brand Ambassador said: "I am excited with him going to United, but at the same time I am a bit cautious because [Joshua] Zirkzee and Hojlund were performing great in their previous clubs. "I watched how they moved, how they bullied defenders, how they scored goals, but then going to the Premier League, they found it difficult to adjust. And the stats speak for themselves, right? Three goals, four goals, for a striker you are going to be disappointed with yourself. "So it's not easy, and is it the speed? Is it the new team? Is it the new environment? Is it most of the time the expectation people put on you because when you are number nine of United, you need to score goals, you need to perform, this is your job, this is your job description. "Of course, there is so much more to being number nine. Dropping down deep, getting the ball, then releasing your team-mates. Running of course, defending when you need to defend, release the spaces for the other team-mates. It's a lot more to [being a] number nine these days, but ultimately it's about the goals you score. "It was difficult campaign for them and it's a difficult period that they are going through, and now with another striker coming in, of course the competition is going to be high. When you buy a striker now you start to think, 'Well am I going to play? Is my place in United? Am I still belonging here? Do I need to start looking for a club?' "Or maybe then you start thinking, 'Alright, I like the competition. Now I'm going to show you. Now I'm going to fight for my place. Now I'm going to bring the fire.' "So it's a two-way scenario. You choose the one I said or the other. So let's see what they are going to bring to the table as well." Berbatov also explained that Amorim must make Hojlund feel wanted and valued should he hope to get the best out of him in the future, and that competition could turn out to be positive for the youngster. He added: "You always want the competition, but at the same time, as a striker, because we think we're special, you need to feel welcome and wanted in the team, by the coach, by everybody. "Then your motivation is going to be higher and your self-esteem is going to be higher. It's a lot of factors. It's not easy, but it's all in the head." For that to happen, Amorim would need to block any incoming transfer interest for Hojlund as the summer transfer window starts to draw to a close. At present, United are willing to let Hojlund part ways with Old Trafford for around £30m, despite the striker insisting that he wants to stay and fight for his place. With Hojlund already on Berbatov's way of thinking, it's up to Amorim to change the board's stance on the player to see if healthy competition truly allows him to flourish in a fresh season. However, it now appears AC Milan are set to approach the Red Devils to take him to the San Siro on loan for the new season. A change of scenery could also, of course, help benefit Hojlund as he looks to find his footing again, especially since he has previously excelled in Serie A. The youngster scored 10 goals in 34 appearances for Atalanta before United signed him in a £72m deal back in 2023, and a temporary move to Milan could allow him to develop his game and return stronger than before next year.
