Do Thai students still see a future in the age of AI?

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems increasingly handle entry-level tasks from data analysis to content creation, an interview shows Thai university students are approaching the technology with measured concern rather than outright fear.
The current reality
The job market for new graduates has become increasingly challenging, with AI advancement making work across industries more automated.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, predicts AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years.
US college graduate unemployment has jumped to 5.8%, with human resources surveys showing 90% of executives likely to avoid hiring recent graduates, preferring freelancers or retired workers instead.
Economic reality behind the fear
A significant concern that emerges from student responses is the economic driving force behind AI adoption. Students repeatedly mentioned that companies might prefer AI "because it's also more cost-effective" and "might not require high wages and would reduce the cost of hiring human labour."
One student noted that while AI quality might be lower, "everyone likes using AI because it's easy. Just click and input, and you get an answer immediately." This convenience factor, combined with cost savings, creates a challenging environment for new graduates regardless of AI's current limitations.
Field-specific vulnerabilities and response patterns
The interview reveals that different fields face varying degrees of immediate threat, which directly correlates with students' concern levels. Rather than uniform responses, Thai students express emotions ranging from "very scared" to "not worried," with many finding themselves "about 50% worried."
High-concern fields: Students in translation and content creation acknowledge more urgent concerns. A translation student admitted being "quite scared" because their profession sits "at the top of the list for job displacement." However, they noted that effective translation involves "the culture of that language" and creative adaptation that "AI still can't do."
Medium-concern fields: Marketing and journalism students see mixed impacts. A journalism student explained that while information gathering becomes easier, fashion journalism "requires a human touch" because "art or fashion is quite subjective."
Lower-concern fields: Engineering, law and psychology students express greater confidence. An engineering student emphasised that "if humans don't sign and approve structures and various projects, when problems arise, who will take responsibility? AI cannot take responsibility."
Interestingly, students with direct AI experience often show more nuanced views. A law student shared: "I once used it to help with work, it was decent, but I didn't trust it and did it myself. ChatGPT gave me completely wrong legal provisions."
Human elements AI cannot replicate
Despite varying levels of concern, students consistently identified capabilities that remain uniquely human: A psychology student noted that while "AI is knowledgeable," it's "not as emotionally intelligent." Students stressed that while AI might have professional skills, it "lacks ethics, emotions, thoughts and feelings."
Translation students highlighted that effective communication requires understanding cultural nuances, while others noted that real work "doesn't just follow what we planned" and requires "immediate problem-solving that requires looking at the situation at that moment."
Multiple students emphasised that AI cannot take responsibility for decisions or provide the case-by-case consideration that many professions require.
The path forward
The responses reveal that Thai graduands are neither dismissing AI's impact nor succumbing to panic. Instead, they are identifying strategic approaches to remain relevant:
Students consistently highlighted capabilities AI cannot replicate, emotional intelligence, ethical judgment, cultural sensitivity and creative problem-solving.
Many students had practical experience with AI tools and understood their constraints, from translation nuances to legal accuracy issues.
Rather than seeing AI as purely threatening, students recognised its potential to enhance work efficiency while maintaining human oversight.
Rather than viewing AI as an existential threat, the interview revealed that these students see opportunity for collaboration. As one student summarised: "I see AI as coming to help make work easier rather than stealing jobs, for my field."

Tunnelling under the Chao Phraya River as part of the southern extension of the MRT Purple Line has begun and is slated for completion in May next year, according to Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit. It is the second such tunnel under the river and marks significant progress in expanding Bangkok's mass transit infrastructure. Mr Suriya said construction work is already 60% complete, ahead of schedule. The section connecting Tao Poon and the National Library is expected to be operational by 2028, with full services across the entire route slated for 2030. The Purple Line's southern extension route spans 23.6 kilometres, stretching from Tao Pun to Rat Burana with 10 underground and seven elevated stations. It will integrate with the existing MRT Blue Line and Purple Line at the Tao Poon interchange, enhancing connectivity across the capital. He said the ministry has put heavy emphasis on safety during construction. The Rail Transport Department and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) have been directed to strictly follow safety protocols, manage traffic effectively, and implement flood prevention measures at construction sites. He said that environmental impacts are being closely monitored, with efforts underway to control dust and maintain air quality around the area. On the government's 20-baht flat fare policy for electric train rides, Mr Suriya said public registration for the scheme will open on Aug 25 via the "Tang Rat" mobile application. Starting on Oct 1, passengers will pay no more than 20 baht per trip on any of the eight electric train lines which operate in Bangkok and surrounding areas. The number of passengers is expected to increase to 250,000 per day, from the current 150,000. In June, the cabinet approved a flat-rate fare of 20 baht for all eight electric train lines in Bangkok available exclusively to Thai nationals.

Amid rising geopolitical tensions and economic fragmentation, Thailand must adapt with agility, deepen international cooperation and invest in future-ready sectors and people. More recently, Thailand and other countries have experienced trade wars, geopolitical fragmentation, supply chain decoupling and a worsening climate crisis, all of which have shaped and impacted markets. "Today, there is a loss of predictability, trust, and economic clarity. Uncertainty has become the new normal," said Nalinee Taveesin, president of Thailand Trade Representatives. Adapting trade policies Mrs Nalinee said Indo-Pacific has become the epicentre of the intensified US-China rivalry, reflecting the region's central role in global supply chains and economic interdependence. To remain competitive in this environment, Thailand is adjusting its trade strategy to both shield itself from external disruptions and seize new market opportunities. She said Thailand remains firmly committed to the multilateral trading system. But officials are also actively pursuing free trade agreements with the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom and South Korea, while deepening regional integration through Asean, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and bilateral deals with countries like Bhutan and Sri Lanka. "Advancing trade connectivity in all dimensions, promoting high-quality investment and diversifying markets are crucial to insulating the Thai economy from effects of tariff wars between major powers," said Mrs Nalinee. She added that Thailand is also making a bold bid to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, a move that would align the country with high-income, innovation-led economies and require comprehensive reforms. Domestically, she said Thailand is building supply chains that are resilient to shocks and ready for the future. The Eastern Economic Corridor is designed to become the region's premier hub for advanced manufacturing, logistics and innovation, and a gateway to Asean's markets. Thailand has been undergoing a digital transformation and preparing for the future of work. In order to ensure that this digital transformation is inclusive, the government has been helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) access digital tools, financing and cross-border platforms. Promising markets, sectors Mrs Nalinee said Thailand's future trade success will depend not only on preserving traditional markets but also on diversifying its economic footprint. The government is exploring new high-potential markets such as Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and the Eurasian Economic Union. The goal is to increase export share to these markets to reduce over-reliance on any single market. She pointed out that the Middle East and the EU have emerged as high-potential export markets. In 2024, the EU was Thailand's fifth-largest export market, with US$24.2 billion in trade, while the Middle East stood sixth, with $11.8 billion. Mrs Nalinee also pointed out promising sectors for Thailand's exports. They are digital economy and smart technologies; electric vehicles (EVs) and components; semiconductors and advanced electronics; medical and wellness and tourism/healthcare services; and logistics and connectivity. "Instead of relying solely on traditional cost-based advantages, Thailand can step up as a hub for strategic resilience -- building strengths in areas like smart electronics, digital technology, sustainable and green investment," she said. She added that the establishment of the National Semiconductor Board and massive investments in digital infrastructure like AI and data centres highlight the country's pivot towards future-focused industries. Green transformation key Mrs Nalinee highlighted Thailand's ambition to lead Southeast Asia's transition to sustainable development through its bio-circular-green economic model. This approach integrates bio-economy, circular economy and green economy principles by focusing on sustainable resource utilisation, waste reduction and environmental conservation. "Thailand is determined to lead Asean as a green manufacturing hub and achieve net-zero emissions by 2065," she said. Workforce development Mrs Nalinee said a key factor that could determine Thailand's success or failure in this new era is human capital. She explained that the Thai government is investing heavily in workforce development. Its ambitious plans include training 280,000 workers for high-tech sectors like AI, EVs, and semiconductors over the next five years. At least 10 million people are expected to gain basic AI skills, with 90,000 trained as AI professionals and 50,000 AI developers. In parallel, Thailand is promoting its soft power through the "One Family, One Soft Power" initiative, with the government supporting local creators in food, fashion, festivals, film, design and digital content. SMEs promotion Mrs Nalinee pointed out the importance of promoting and strengthening SMEs during these challenging and unpredictable times. She said the Board of Investment has introduced targeted measures to help SMEs adapt to global shifts including support for technology adoption and suspending investment promotion for businesses likely to create oversupply or those at risk of trade restrictions from the US or other countries. It also tightens scrutiny on key production processes for certain industries vulnerable to US trade measures, such as auto parts, electronics and metal products; and tightens criteria and screening regarding the hiring of foreign personnel in proportion to Thai personnel for manufacturing activities.

TAT sees hope in winter flight prospects

The 1-million target set for the Middle East and African markets this year remains challenging due to geopolitical conflicts, but Thailand still has opportunities from new flight openings this winter, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Hatsanai Chaisri, marketing manager for the Middle East and Africa at TAT's Dubai office, said growth in the Middle East market has been slow, particularly among family groups and first-time visitors. They are hesitant to travel abroad due to geopolitical uncertainty in the region, as well as the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, which took place in June, even though it ended with a ceasefire, said Mr Hatsanai. He said the agency expects travel momentum to rebound in August, which aligns with the school break for summer -- a high season for the market. TAT Dubai is responsible for marketing in 13 Middle East and nine African markets, mostly in North Africa, along with South Africa. Prior to the 12-day war, arrivals from the market had strongly increased since the beginning of the year, but growth has weakened with a year-on-year increase of roughly 2%. As of July 27, the markets under the TAT Dubai office tallied 497,697, growing 2.22% year-on-year. To achieve the 1-million target set for the TAT's Dubai office, it must secure at least 11% growth year-on-year in 2025, he said. Key drivers include Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, which are expected to generate 243,000, 181,000 and 118,030 arrivals, respectively, this year. Mr Hatsanai said a strong flight recovery of over 95% compared to the level recorded prior to the pandemic could also be a crucial factor. Currently, 11 airlines operate direct flights between the region and Thailand, serving roughly 231 flights per week and 288,380 seats per month. There are three new flights scheduled for this winter, namely Abu Dhabi-Krabi and Abu Dhabi-Chiang Mai via Etihad, and Sharjah-Krabi via Air Arabia. Typically, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market accounts for 70% of overall arrivals from the region each year, said Mr Hatsanai. Major segments are families and millennials, with high average spending of 9,600 baht a day or more than 100,000 baht a trip. They mostly choose five-star or luxury hotels and enjoy shopping, beaches and nature, as well as health and medical tourism. A decisive factor is halal-friendly trips offering halal food, prayer facilities and exclusive programmes or privacy options, such as private pool villas and VIP airport transfers, he said. As the outbound market among GCC countries is forecast to grow by 7% annually over the next five years, tourism operators are urged to adapt to changing behaviour. They have started using AI to plan their trips and are gravitating towards sustainable travel. Providing content and advertisements in Arabic is recommended for Thai operators, as they have higher click-through rates than English. Next month, the TAT will host the Middle East Trade Meet in Bangkok and Koh Samui, and organise a luxury roadshow to Kuwait and Bahrain in November. Next year, one of its flagship projects is Wellness Escapes in Amazing Thailand, targeting the Saudi Arabia and Oman markets in particular. Opportunities in other markets include Morocco, with a population of over 38 million. Arrivals surged after visa requirements were lifted for this market last year. A large portion of them are honeymooners. However, growth in some countries remains challenging due to sluggish economies and devalued currencies, such as Iran and Egypt.
