Hawks continue hot streak as 76ers keep sliding

Miami Herald24-03-2025

Trae Young scored 28 points, one of three Atlanta players with 20 or more points, to lead the Hawks to their third straight win, a 132-119 victory over the visiting Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday.
Young made four 3-pointers and added 12 assists for his 42nd double-double. He joined rookie Zaccharie Risacher (22 points) and Georges Niang (20 points) as the Hawks won for the seventh time in nine games.
The win gives Atlanta (35-36) a two-game lead over idle Orlando for the No. 7 spot in the Eastern Conference. If able to sustain that position, the Hawks would still be in the play-in tournament but would have home-court advantage and need only one win to reach the NBA playoffs.
The Hawks have a 2-0 lead over Philadelphia in the season series. The teams play for the final time April 11 in Philadelphia.
Niang made at least five 3-pointers for the second straight game before fouling out. Onyeka Okongwu added 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Dominic Barlow scored a season-high 13.
Dyson Daniels had five steals -- his 39th game with three-plus steals -- and became the first player since Chris Paul in 2008-09 to record 200 steals in a season.
Philadelphia (23-48) has lost four games in a row and 19 of 22. The Sixers are seven games behind Miami for the No. 10 playoff spot with 11 games remaining. Philadelphia dropped to 11-26 on the road.
Quentin Grimes scored 26 points for the 11th time in 20 games that he's scored at least 25 points. Justin Edwards scored 22 points, Jeff Dowtin Jr. had 17 and Ricky Council IV added 14 points before fouling out.
Niang came off the bench to score nine points in the first quarter and send the Hawks to a 35-24 lead. The Atlanta reserves outscored Philly's bench 36-11 in the first half and led 64-52 at the break.
The Hawks begin a three-game road trip on Tuesday at Houston. The Sixers complete their six-game road trip on Tuesday at New Orleans.

Yankees' Max Fried continues to make case to start the All-Star Game after reaching 10 wins

CINCINNATI (AP) — Aaron Boone still has a couple weeks before deciding who will be the American League's starting pitcher for the All-Star Game. It could end up being one of his own players. Max Fried became the first pitcher to reach 10 wins this season in the New York Yankees 7-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. 'It's down the road. We'll see. He's making the case though,' Boone said about Fried's chances to start the midsummer classic on July 15 in Atlanta. The left-hander allowed one unearned run and four hits while striking out seven to improve to 10-2. Fried is the third Yankees pitcher since 1962 to be the first in the majors to reach double-digit victories, joining CC Sabathia in 2011 and Tommy John in 1979. 'I guess it's cool but we're all here just trying to win games. A lot of it is credit to my teammates. It's nice, but that's more of a team stat than an individual one,' said Fried about reaching double digits in wins. Fried signed a $218 million, eight-year contract with the Yankees last December and has excelled in his first year in pinstripes. He quickly became the staff's ace after Gerrit Cole was lost for the season during spring training due to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Fried has four games this season where he has gone at least seven innings and not allowed an earned run, tied with Detroit's Tarik Skubal and San Diego's Nick Pivetta for most in the majors. He's second in the majors with a 1.92 ERA and 108 innings. 'Ever since (Cole) went down he's shown us why they paid him what they paid him and why he's the guy we thought he was going to be. Especially someone who I played against for four or five years, to play behind him now is amazing,' third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. said. 'I always give him his prop and his flowers, but now he can take them any time he wants.' The 1.92 ERA is the third-lowest by a Yankees' pitcher is his first 17 starts with the club since earned runs became an official stat in both leagues in 1913. Fried has allowed two or fewer earned runs in all but two starts. He has been even more dominant after Yankees' losses, going 8-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 10 starts. 'I mean 10 wins in half a season, it's not easy to do in any era, especially now. But that's just a testament to how good and efficient he's been,' Boone said. 'Whether it's coming off a loss or extending a streak, his consistency has been great. 'I told him again today 'just watching you more and more, I would not have wanted to hit off you.' He's got so many weapons out there and there's just so much movement to all his pitches, he's been terrific.' Fried getting the start in the All-Star Game would carry more importance after he played eight seasons in Atlanta before coming to New York. Fried though knows that decision remains a couple weeks away. 'I've got a handful of starts to go before the break. A lot can happen between now and then. Just focused on the next one in five or six days. I will deal with it when it gets here,' he said. ___ AP MLB:

Philadelphia Phillies' offense struggles again in second-straight loss to Houston Astros

Victor Caratini homered, Isaac Paredes drove in a run and the Houston Astros shut out the Philadelphia Phillies for a second straight game with a 2-0 victory on Wednesday night. Houston starter Colton Gordon (3-1) allowed four singles and struck out four in five innings. Josh Hader struck out one in the ninth for his 21st save. Jeremy Peña hit a leadoff ground-rule double and scored on a groundball single by Isaac Paredes to give Houston an early lead. Houston's pitching staff had retired nine straight when Brandon Marsh singled to right field off Bryan King with one out in the eighth. Trea Turner's single on a grounder to center field sent Marsh to third before Kyle Schwarber singled on an infield grounder to load the bases. But, King struck out Alec Bohm before Nick Castellanos grounded out to leave Philadelphia emptyhanded. Caratini's solo shot came with two outs in the bottom of the inning to give the Astros an insurance run. Wednesday's win comes after the Astros got a 1-0 victory in Tuesday's series opener. Philadelphia starter Zack Wheeler (7-3) yielded four hits and a run while striking out eight in six innings. The Phillies had runners on first and second with one out in the fifth, but Gordon struck out Marsh and Turner to end the threat. Jake Meyers sprinted to make a catch on the warning track in center field on a ball hit by Bryson Stott for the second out of the seventh inning. Key moment King shutting the Phillies down after loading the bases in the eighth to preserve the lead. Key stat Wednesday was the sixth time the Phillies have been shut out this season. Philadelphia has not scored a run in 19 straight innings. Up next Houston RHP Hunter Brown (8-3, 1.88 ERA), whose ERA leads the majors, opposes LHP Cristopher Sánchez (6-2, 2.87) when the series concludes Thursday.

VJ Edgecombe gives initial thoughts on joining Sixers after selection

CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers decided to make a selection with the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA draft on Wednesday as they moved forward with an important offseason in terms of being able to build a championship roster around the Big 3. With that No. 3 pick, the Sixers selected Baylor star VJ Edgecombe. He may not have the star upside that Rutgers star Ace Bailey have at this early point in his career, but he looks like he can be somebody who can slide in right away and make an impact next to the star trio of Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey. "Man, it was crazy," Edgecombe said over a Zoom session on joining the Sixers. "Like I said, I feel like we can be a team that can win in the finals, especially when everyone's healthy. Man, it's a surreal moment being drafted by Philly. It's a surreal moment. Man, I was at a loss for words for like, the first 20 minutes, 30 minutes. Man, I just can't believe it's true." The Sixers went 24-58 in a miserable 2024-25 season as injuries just ran through the roster and destroyed any chances they had at winning the title they're continuing to chase. With a clean bill of health, there is a chance for this group to compete for a championship in 2025-26. A trio of Embiid, George, and Maxey can do so many good things on the floor. Throw in a guy like Edgecombe who brings a seriously high basketball IQ along with elite athleticism and his fit next to the Big 3 should be seamless in theory. Nobody will know until he gets on the floor and plays with them, but at this moment in time, the Sixers have to be happy with who they got at No. 3. "I feel like I'll play well off them," Edgecombe said of his role in Philadelphia. "I've been playing off the ball, so I don't need the ball to be impactful. So like I say, knowing the type of player they are, I feel like I'll be able to fit right in. Play off of them, learn from them, help on the defensive end." Edgecombe will be in the backcourt with Maxey who is an All-Star guard and also one of Philadelphia's leaders. During his pre-draft workout with the Sixers, Edgecombe was able to meet with Maxey and the two hit it off immediately. It's that type of off the court impact that makes a difference in this league. "Man, he's a great person," Edgecombe said of Maxey. "We just got to know each other. We don't even talk basketball the whole time. We talked basketball here, and he was telling me it was great seeing me, but I was just telling him how I'm just huge fan of his game, but just got to know him, man. He's a great person, super energetic, full of joy, and that's someone I'm definitely looking forward to working with. That's gonna be my backcourt mate. Hopefully, we retire on the same team."
