Over 1,000 To Receive Gallantry Awards On 15 August, Jammu And Kashmir Gets Most
The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the official list of recipients of medals for Police, Fire Services, Home Guard & Civil Defence, and Correctional Services on the occasion of Independence Day on Friday.
The honours include Gallantry Awards, the President's Medal for Distinguished Service, and the Medal for Meritorious Service.
This year, a total of 1,090 medals will be conferred, comprising 233 Gallantry Medals, 99 President's Medals for Distinguished Service, and 758 Medals for Meritorious Service.
In the Police category, 226 officers and personnel have been selected for the Gallantry Medal, 89 will be honoured with the President's Medal for Distinguished Service, and 635 will receive the Medal for Meritorious Service.
The highest number of Gallantry Medals has gone to personnel from Jammu and Kashmir, followed by members of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Border Security Force (BSF).
For the Fire Services, 62 awards have been announced, which include six Gallantry Medals, five President's Medals for Distinguished Service, and 51 Medals for Meritorious Service.
In the Home Guard and Civil Defence category, the honours will include one Gallantry Medal, three President's Medals for Distinguished Service, and 41 Medals for Meritorious Service.
For Correctional Services, two officers will be recognised with the President's Medal for Distinguished Service, while 31 will receive the Medal for Meritorious Service.
This annual recognition is a tribute to the bravery, dedication, and distinguished service of officers and personnel across states, union territories, and central armed police forces.
The medals will be presented as part of the Independence Day celebrations to acknowledge the exceptional contribution of these individuals in safeguarding law, order, and public safety in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's failure to mention the country's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru's name in his Independence Day speech was 'disturbing', according to veteran Maharashtra politician and Rajya Sabha MP Sharad Pawar, who heads his own faction of the Nationalist Congress Party. 'I heard the Prime Minister's speech from the Red Fort. It was very disturbing that he did not mention Nehru in his entire speech… Nehru gave important years of his youth to the freedom struggle of India. After Independence, he led the country and spread the message of peace worldwide. 'Fight to save democracy' On the Opposition protest against the Election Commission, Mr. Pawar said, 'The present situation of politics is challenging. It is not a healthy sign for democracy.' He added that this was the first time 300 MPs had come together for a peaceful protest. 'It included [Congress leaders] Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and members from other parties as well, but we were detained and taken to the police station. The fight is to save democracy. If those in the government do not find it important, then we, as Opposition, will have to keep raising our voice,' he said. A history lesson on choosing unity Mr. Pawar, who served multiple terms as Maharashtra Chief Minister while he was a Congressman, recalled how that party had once prioritised unity for ideological reasons. After the Emergency, the grand old party had split into the Congress (Indira) and the Swarn Singh Congress. At the time, Mr. Pawar had remained in the Swarn Singh Congress with his mentor Yashwantrao Chavan, but neither side had a clear majority in the elections that followed 'Eventually, we came together and made Vasantdada [Patil] the Chief Minister. However, many of us young workers had a resentment against Congress (I), since we were aligned with Chavan saheb. So there was a gap. Dada tried to bridge it, but we opposed it,' Mr. Pawar said. 'I was among the key opponents. As a result, we decided to bring down the government and we did. I became the Chief Minister,' he added. Ten years later, the factions had reunited. When a meeting was called to decide the next CM, many names were discussed, including Ramrao Adik and Shivajirao Nilangekar, before Mr. Pawar was chosen. 'Imagine the same leader whose government I brought down, put all that aside and chose unity for ideology. That was the kind of large-hearted leadership we had in the Congress,' the former CM said.

309 families evicted from Assam grazing reserve
The authorities in northeastern Assam's Biswanath district evicted 309 families from a village grazing reserve (VGR) on Sunday (August 17, 2025). Officials in the district said some 600 security personnel, 20 excavators, and 10 bulldozers were deployed to clear 175 bighas or 23 hectares of land in the Japariguri VGR from encroachment. District Commissioner Simanta Kumar Das said many families dismantled their houses and left after receiving notices on August 1 to vacate within 15 days. 'The remaining structures, including a tea garden, were demolished,' he said. The encroachers, officials said, were mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims. While organisations of indigenous communities have backed such eviction drives, the All-Assam Minority Students' Union said the Biswanath exercise was carried out inhumanely and demanded a pause until the government ensures rehabilitation of the people targeted. CM's 'hate-driven propaganda' In his Independence Day speech, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma vowed to continue such eviction drives to free forestlands, grazing lands, and government revenue lands from encroachers of 'doubtful citizenship'. He also warned the indigenous communities about a future where they will be at the mercy of 'strangers' unless they defend their cultural identity. Assam MLA and All-India United Democratic Front general secretary Rafiqul Islam criticised the Chief Minister for defaming Muslims. He also said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Assam government has been systematically keeping Muslim officers away from key positions. Terming the Chief Minister's Independence Day speech as 'hate-driven propaganda' to polarise the people on religious lines, he told agencies that the BJP-led government has consciously not appointed any Muslim as the District Commissioner or Superintendent of Police, although there are several Muslim IAS and IPS officers in Assam.

Rajasthan sarpanches express gratitude to PM Modi for their I-Day experience at Red Fort
Sarpanches from the border areas of Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Ganganagar were invited to the Red Fort in the national capital on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15 (Friday). Those present at the Red Fort on Friday shared their experience on Sunday. The sarpanches said they never thought that they would be called to Delhi and felicitated. They also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BSF. The Border Security Force (BSF) carried out innovative initiatives on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations. Under this, along with BSF jawans at the border, the young public representatives who were always ready to serve the country were always invited as special guests. They got the opportunity to participate as special guests at the Red Fort. The aim of this initiative is to honour the public representatives. BSF IG Madanlal Garg said that the government had launched a vibrant village scheme, under which the village should be strengthened and the people of the village get employment in the village itself, and they should not go elsewhere. According to a statement, more than 220 schemes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government are being 100 per cent implemented in Vibrant Villages. He said that the village residents "supported us during Operation Sindoor... there was no need to evacuate the village". One sarpanch each from villages in four districts of the border was selected to be called to Delhi. Sarpanches were called under the Centre's Vibrant Village Scheme. The Vibrant Village Scheme aims to develop the villages across the border areas. Through skill development, scope for new employment opportunities is aimed to be created so that the people of the village do not need to go to urban areas in search of employment. Sanjana, 22 KYD Sarpanch, Bikaner district, said: 'We were called to honour on the occasion of Independence Day. It was a great idea to meet PM Modi. Travelled in his life for the first time in an airplane." Bhartharam, Sarpanch of Navatla Bakhasar village in Barmer district, told IANS that it was a great experience. "During Operation Sindoor, we encouraged the BSF, so we were called to Delhi on Independence Day. It is a matter of great pride for all of us. We never thought we would get a chance to travel." Sarpanch Geeta Kanwar said: "I feel proud that on August 15, PM Modi extended an invitation. The BSF made quite good arrangements to take us to Delhi. It was good to listen to the Prime Minister's speech at the Red Fort. I thank PM Modi for inviting us."
