
As Texas's measles outbreak slows, officials warn of rise in other states
The measles outbreak in Texas is showing signs of slowing, though other states are seeing more cases and health officials are warning against complacency as the US continues to experience high rates of measles amid falling vaccination rates.
It has been a handful of days since anyone in Lubbock, Texas, has tested positive, and there are no known measles hospitalizations at the children's hospital in the city, which has also cared for children from nearby Gaines county.
'We're really cautiously optimistic,' said Katherine Wells, the director of Lubbock Public Health.
It takes 42 days with no new measles cases to declare a community's outbreak is over, so Lubbock is not out of the woods yet, she said.
Wastewater analyses indicate infections may be going down in El Paso and Lubbock, said Anthony Maresso, a professor of molecular virology and microbiology at the Baylor College of Medicine who is part of a team monitoring wastewater pathogens in 15 cities across Texas.
But this doesn't mean the danger has passed. Wells and Maresso warned against letting up on momentum against the deadly disease outbreak.
'We're still seeing measles cases in El Paso. We're seeing measles cases in some of the other states in the central United States. It really just takes one person in a car who's infectious to introduce it into another community,' Wells said.
Texas announced six new cases on Friday for a total of 728 this year. A total of 94 people have been hospitalized in the Texas outbreak and two school-aged children died.
The west Texas outbreak has also spread to a handful of other states. Officials in New Mexico announced on Thursday the tally had risen to 76 cases, and they confirmed that the death of an adult in March was indeed caused by measles.
There have been 58 cases in Kansas and 17 cases in Oklahoma, in addition to other states seeing separate outbreaks.
The US now has a total of 1,024 confirmed measles cases, which makes 2025 the second-worst year already for measles since the virus was declared eliminated from the US in 2000.
The outbreak may be losing steam in west Texas because of successful vaccination campaigns and because many people who were not vaccinated have now been infected.
Although children have suffered the bulk of cases, about two-thirds of the cases in El Paso are among adults. Officials recommend that anyone in the outbreak areas unsure of their vaccination status should get a measles booster shot.
Yet Robert F Kennedy Jr, the head of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), has repeatedly spread misinformation about the measles vaccine.
'You have consistently been undermining the measles vaccine,' Chris Murphy, a Democratic senator from Connecticut, told Kennedy at a 14 May hearing on the HHS budget.
'You told the public that the vaccine wanes very quickly. You went on the Dr Phil show and said that the measles vaccine was never fully tested for safety. You said there's fetal debris in the measles vaccine,' Murphy said.
'All true. All true,' Kennedy said.
'None of that is true,' Murphy responded.
'Of course it's true,' Kennedy said.
Statements like these undermine the public's confidence in vaccines at a critical time, experts said.
Communities that have fallen below the 95% threshold for community immunity (also known as herd immunity) should run vaccination campaigns now, before new outbreaks begin, both Wells and Maresso said.
'The easiest thing you can do, in this case, is just put out an educational campaign around closing the vaccine gap,' said Maresso. 'If we had vaccine coverage above 95%, we would not see these outbreaks. It's that effective.'
Wells added that 'what we've learned here is that there's a lot of communities across the US that have these lower vaccination rates.'
Summer tends to be a high season for travel, and travelers may import measles from a state or country experiencing an outbreak into at-risk communities like these, Wells said.
'We see lots of movement in the summer,' Wells continued. 'So you see lots of people traveling internationally to places that might have endemic measles, that can reintroduce it into any vulnerable community across the United States.'
Monitoring wastewater can serve as an early warning sign of a budding outbreak, especially in places with low vaccination rates.
The Texas wastewater monitoring was funded by the state legislature through the Texas Epidemic Public Health Institute (TEPHI), created during the Covid pandemic 'as kind of a Texas version of the CDC', Maresso said.
'We saw a signal for measles in the wastewater before any of this outbreak discussion in Texas or really before it started to become a headline worldwide,' Maresso said.
'If we are seeing the earliest stages of an outbreak, it gives us a lead time to warn public health folks: 'There are cases. You're probably not seeing them on the clinical radar, but there are cases in your community, and you should expect that you're going to start to see cases – and if they're not vaccinated, it's going to get worse.''
Local leaders should prepare for measles outbreaks now, Wells said.
'Some of it's education to your physicians, your schools, your daycares, about measles, what the rash looks like, just so that people are paying attention to that,' she said.
Public health officials should also understand their testing capabilities and the logistics of, for instance, transporting specimens to laboratories.
That way, 'you're prepared and it's at the front of your mind – not sitting back in some dusty textbook,' Wells said.
But all of that work requires funding. While public health departments have frequently worked on shoestring budgets, the Trump administration has made funding even more precarious.
'There was a clawback of the Covid funding that was available to local health departments,' Wells said. And with other federal funds for public health, 'it's even harder to follow exactly what's going on,' Wells noted.
'I'm concerned. It's so important for us to have local public health departments that can respond to things like measles or whatever the next outbreak is.'

Cancer breakthrough as doctors unveil way to zap tumors into oblivion without chemo
A new cancer treatment that uses light could remove the need for harsh chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Texas researchers have devised a way to use infrared light as a jackhammer that can tear cancer cells apart from the inside, showing in trials to have eliminated melanomas, the deadliest form of skin cancer. A synthetic blue dye often used in hospital imaging naturally binds to cancer cells. Researchers found that when the cancer cells were zapped with infrared light, it triggered violent shaking that tore through the cancer cell's membrane, causing it to die without any heat or harsh drugs. The latest breakthrough method – known as vibronic-driven action – had a 99 percent efficiency against lab cultures of human skin cancer cells, and half of the mice with melanoma tumors became cancer-free after just one treatment. 'It is a whole new generation of molecular machines that we call molecular jackhammers,' said Rice University nanotechnologist Dr James Tour. Near- infrared light can penetrate up to 10 cm into the body, reaching organs and bones without surgery. Light particles can also be functionalized to only bind to cancer cells, mitigating damage done to healthy cells. The treatment itself is highly targeted because the atoms of dye bind to the receptors on cancer cells while leaving healthy cells largely untouched. It has already shown in followup trials to kill colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer cells. The next step will be determining whether this same molecular jackhammer will destroy cancer cells in humans. 'This study is about a different way to treat cancer using mechanical forces at the molecular scale,' said Ciceron Ayala-Orozco, a Rice research scientist who is a lead author on the study. If scaled up to human patients, the treatment's impact could be sweeping. An estimated 1.5 million Americans are living with melanoma, 1.4 million have colorectal cancer, and 300,000 men have prostate cancer. In 2025, approximately 316,950 women will be diagnosed with severe, invasive breast cancer. The unassuming dye found in hospitals nationwide is a key feature of vibronic-driven action. After it binds to receptors on melanoma cells, it is assaulted with infrared light, which triggers an earthquake in the cell. The dye atoms begin to vibrate in unison. The dye's electrons sync up into a "plasmon"—a wave of collective motion. This energy couples with the molecule's natural vibrations, making the entire structure shudder at 41 trillion times per second. The violent oscillating energy is transferred directly into the cell's fatty membrane, while nanoscale holes tear open, allowing fluid and foreign molecules to flood in. This fast-moving mechanical force is such that 'anything around it will be disassembled,' Ayala-Orozco said. The cancer cell crumbles as the holes poked in its membrane increase, and dies without further use of any drug or radiation treatment. They're biocompatible, stable in water and very good at attaching themselves to the fatty outer lining of cells. But even though they were being used for imaging, people did not know how to activate these as plasmons.' After struggling for years to make blue-light-activated motors work against mouse tumors, Ayala-Orozco turned to explore completely different approaches. 'I started to think that maybe what I needed was not necessarily a motor, but a molecule that absorbs near-infrared light, in the hopes that this molecule could be activated and could move in a different way — not necessarily by rotation,' he told Healio. 'That's when I started thinking about some molecules called cyanines and started connecting the dots with a property from photophysics called plasmons, which I studied during my PhD to treat cancer. They are activated by near-infrared light. At some point, I decided I had to try this.' When researchers turned their microscopes on other cancer types, they made an exciting discovery: the molecular jackhammers proved just as devastating against prostate, breast, and colorectal cancer cells in petri dishes. 'No matter which line, we are able to eliminate 100 percent on cell culture,' Ayala-Orozco said. The university will need to partner with a private company to scale up, overcome regulatory hurdles, and enter human trials, 'hopefully, within 5 to 7 years,' Ayala-Orozco said.

‘Contaminated' supermarket item is linked to mystery hepatitis outbreak that left 95 Brits ill and 58 hospitalised
OFFICIALS are investigating a mysterious surge in hepatitis A cases believed to be linked to a supermarket item. A total of 95 people have been left ill from the outbreak with a further 58 falling so ill they needed to be hospitalised. 3 3 The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed two separate clusters of the virus have been identified. Officials have received reports of 54 cases since December 2024 and are now investigating the cause of the outbreak. Patient interviews have indicated that the outbreak comes from a specific food item purchased from an unnamed supermarket. A UKHSA report reads: "A particular food item purchased from a particular supermarket has emerged as a possible vehicle of transmission due to its frequent reported consumption." The product has not been named despite officials identifying it as a "possible vehicle of transmission." The first identified cluster saw 19 people hospitalised with the infection that affects the liver. Most of the patients in the first cluster to be identified were between the ages of 50 and 69. The second cluster saw a further 39 people requiring hospitalisation after catching the virus. Cases related to the first cluster were identified between January 2021 and March 2025. The latest wave of infections began in January 2023 with cases still being reported in March this year. No deaths linked to the outbreak have been reported as of yet. Public Health Scotland are leading the investigation alongside the UKHSA. Hepatitis A begins with mild symptoms but can quickly develop into a more serious illness. It causes weakness and fatigue, a loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, fever jaundice and abdominal pain. If left untreated the infection can lead to liver failure and can even be fatal. 3 Unlike hepatitis B and C, hepatitis A isn't known to cause chronic liver disease. Symptoms tend to develop within two months of infection but can go undetected for longer. The NHS warns that children and some adults may have no symptoms. In less extreme cases the virus usually clears up on its own within six months but doctors can prescribe medication to alleviate symptoms. The UKHSA is continuing to investigate the recent outbreaks with an unnamed food item from an unnamed supermarket identified as a possible cause. UKHSA officials have not stated the name of supermarket, or the food item. The UKHSA report reads: "Given the reported lack of international travel in most cases, and implicated food items, further investigations into the possible sources of these clusters are in progress to inform control measures." The UKHSA has been contacted for comment. The symptoms of hepatitis A you need to be aware of Symptoms of Hepatitis A can include jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes, dark-coloured urine and itchy skin. This is because when your liver isn't working properly, it stops being able to get rid of bilirubin, a substance that causes jaundice. There may be earlier flu-like symptoms including mild fever, joint and muscle pain, feeling and being sick, diarrhoea and stomach pain. Losing your appetite, feeling or being sick and pain in the upper right part of your tummy could also be a sign of the condition. Not everyone infected will have all these symptoms. Anyone with suspected hepatitis A infection should contact their GP and remain at home, until their GP advises their return to school or the workplace. It is an unpleasant illness but is not usually serious and most people make a full recovery in two months. Panic as world's most contagious disease strikes favorite US travel spot
A popular US summer spot is on red alert after two travelers were diagnosed with measles while passing through the state, potentially infecting others. A child passenger under five traveled with family to Ontario, Canada, where a measles outbreak is ongoing, and returned home to El Paso County in Colorado Springs with the extremely contagious virus. The child was vaccinated with one dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine but did not have full immunity. Meanwhile, an unvaccinated adult traveler was also hit by the rash illness after being exposed to it while traveling through Denver International Airport on May 13. It is believed the individual, from Arapahoe County, came into contact with an out-of-state traveler who flew while infectious. Some of the spots the infected persons passed through in Colorado Springs include a Maverick Gas Station on Airport Rd, the Single Barrel Bar And Grill, and the King Soopers grocery store. They also visited two medical centers, with these being Powers Pointe Urgent Care and St. Francis Medical Center Emergency Department. Colorado Springs, which is a popular destination for its stunning mountain views and access to various outdoor activities, now has two confirmed cases of measles as the potentially deadly infection rips its way across the US. The two fresh Colorado Springs measles cases come amid multiple confirmed cases across Colorado, including in Aurora and Denver – many of which were linked to a Turkish Airlines flight that landed into DIA in mid-May. Colorado officials are warning anyone who fears they may have been exposed to contact their health provider and monitor for symptoms in what is the latest in a string of measles scares to rock America's major airports and surrounding neighborhoods. Currently there have been 1,168 confirmed measles cases in the US and at least three deaths reported by 34 states. Measles is the world's most contagious disease but those who are fully vaccinated are protected in 97 percent of cases. The current jurisdictions impacted are Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York State, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. Of these cases, three-quarters are in children under the age of 19. In an updated advisory, the CDC is warning that people can get infected with measles during travel or at crowded events, unless they are fully vaccinated or have had the disease. The notice reads: 'Travelers can catch measles in many travel settings, including travel hubs like airports and train stations, on public transportation like airplanes and trains, at tourist attractions, and at large, crowded events. 'Infected travelers can bring the disease back to their home communities where it can spread rapidly among people who are not immune.' The government agency recommends that all travelers be fully vaccinated against measles before traveling to an international destination. The last time measles was this rife in the US was in 2019, when there were 1,274 cases reported for the entire year. Prior to that, the biggest outbreak was in 1990, with numbers spiking to more than 27,000. Measles was officially eradicated in the US in 2000 amid a successful vaccination campaign. At the time, the CDC described achieving measles elimination status in the US as a 'historic public health achievement'. However, a recent study found uptake of the vaccine among children declined in eight in 10 US counties last year, which is being signaled as the cause of the measles resurgence. Overall, vaccine rates fell three percent across the country. It means that merely 91 percent of children are vaccinated against measles, which is well below the 95 percent need to prevent the disease from spreading and causing deaths. The Johns Hopkins University researchers warned that if vaccination rates continue to fall, measles is likely to completely return and become a common infection among Americans. A majority of those infected as well as the all of the deceased had not received their MMR vaccine - primarily due to vaccine hesitancy and misinformation, experts say. Measles causes tiny white spots inside the mouth, flat red spots on the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet, ear infections and an intense fever. In terms of when to get vaccinated, experts say children need two doses of MMR vaccine: the first dose at age 12-15 months, and the second dose at age 4-6 years. Babies ages 6-11 months should get an early dose if traveling internationally. Adults should also check to see if they are immune to measles.
