Over 1800 bridges inspected in Gujarat, 133 shut down as precautionary measure

Indian Express16-07-2025
The Roads and Buildings (R&B) department officials, in a week, have inspected over 1800 bridges in Gujarat during their spot visits and closed 133 of them as a precautionary measure, an official release said.
The release also said that out of the 133 bridges, 20 were closed for all vehicles and 113 were closed only for heavy vehicles.
The official release quoted the information provided by senior minister and spokesperson of Gujarat government Rushikesh Patel.
Patel was briefing the media about the weekly cabinet meeting of the state chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The cabinet meeting reviewed some important actions taken by the R&B department.
The release said: 'Out of these 133 bridges, 20 have been closed for all vehicles. Whereas, 113 bridges have been closed for heavy vehicles while the movement for light vehicles' has been kept on. Non-destructive tests (NDT) have been done on those 133 bridges and the work of repair, strengthening or re-construction have been started on war footing as per requirement.'
These 133 bridges also include nine bridges on Narmada canal network; five of them have been closed for all vehicles and four for heavy vehicles. The five bridges closed for all vehicles are in Morbi and Surendranagar districts. Whereas, the four closed for heavy vehicles are in Ahmedabad and Patan districts.
There are around 2110 bridges passing through the canal network in the state, as per an official release.
Meanwhile, Patel also said that following the CM's instructions, the tender of Rs 212 crore has been issued to construct a new additional bridge near Gambhira bridge in Vadodara. On July 9, the Gambhira bridge collapse resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people.
'In general circumstances, the time limit to build such a bridge is 18 months. But in the case of Gambhira bridge, by doing a department-level review and to ensure that people get the facility early, the Chief Minister has issued instructions to complete the work by next monsoon — in 12 months. Accordingly, the work will start in the next three months,' the release said.

Mandya DC reviews progress of fisheries sector

Mandya: With an impressive annual fish production of nearly 30,000 tonnes, Mandya district holds significant potential in the fisheries sector. Deputy commissioner Kumara emphasised the urgent need to establish a well-structured market system to support and encourage fish farmers. He addressed the district-level review meeting of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) for the financial year 2025–26, held at the DC's office and organised by the department of fisheries. Highlighting the district's fishery resources, Kumara noted that Mandya has 865 lakes—including 177 departmental lakes and 688 gram panchayat lakes—as well as 26 river stretches and four reservoirs used for fish cultivation. In the financial year 2024–25 alone, 306 lakes were developed to enhance fish farming. The district is home to 47 fishermen cooperative societies, supporting over 45,000 fishermen. Kumara stressed the importance of equipping these fishermen with advanced training and best practices in fishery techniques to improve productivity and sustainability, he said. Over the past five years, 742 beneficiaries availed support under the PMMSY, with a cumulative financial assistance of Rs 513.3 lakh disbursed. For the year 2024–25 alone, Rs 224.2 lakh was sanctioned. The DC directed officials to ensure effective utilisation of these funds and promote fish farming even in agricultural ponds. Zilla panchayat CEO KR Nandini, who also spoke on the occasion, underlined the need for continuous training for beneficiaries and called for strict monitoring to prevent misuse of the scheme's benefits.

Parivaar, Paisa Aur Papa: Siblings In Multicrore Property War Discover They're Both Adopted

Last Updated: In China, siblings found out they were both adopted while disputing their father's Rs 3.6 crore property. The court granted equal inheritance rights, leading to a settlement. News18 A man and his sister in China were fighting over their father's property, but the inheritance dispute took a dramatic turn when they discovered that neither of them was the biological child of their deceased parents. Sun, who hailed from the city of Tianjin in northern China, had transferred ownership of a property worth Rs 3.6 crore (three million yuan) solely to his son before his death in March 2025. However, Sun had also expressed a wish for his son to provide 'reasonable compensation" to his adopted daughter. The daughter, who was adopted in 1966, challenged the inheritance at the Nankai District People's Court in Tianjin, claiming that the contract bore only her father's signature. She argued that her mother's share should still be considered part of the estate. 'Since the contract was signed only by him, my mother's share should be treated as part of the inheritance. This house was given to me by my parents; no one is taking it from me," she said, as reported by the South China Morning Post. While the court proceedings were underway, the woman presented evidence that her brother's household registration documents were marked 'adopted". This shocking detail revealed that her brother was not a biological child either. However, the brother refused to share the property. He claimed that his sister had cut off ties with the family following a dispute in the 1990s, and that he had cared for their parents until their deaths. The judge noted that being adopted does not disqualify a child from inheriting property. The court ruled that both the brother and sister had equal rights to the inheritance. After hours of mediation, the two reached a settlement. The sister agreed to accept Rs 66 lakh (550,000 yuan) in compensation from her brother, who retained full ownership of the property. In China, customary inheritance practices have long favoured sons, particularly regarding land and property. Although legal reforms have promoted gender equality, deeply rooted cultural traditions still influence inheritance practices, often resulting in women receiving smaller shares than men. view comments First Published: July 29, 2025, 22:19 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
