Eric Clapton Blocked From No. 1 — By One Of The Biggest Movies Of The Year

Eric Clapton changed the trajectory of his career when he released Slowhand. The fifth solo set by the celebrated guitarist dropped in the mid-'70s and produced some of the most popular singles in his catalog. Tracks like 'Lay Down Sally,' 'Cocaine,' and 'Wonderful Tonight' still rank among Clapton's most familiar hits, and they continue to power the full-length to this day – and nearly back to the top of a Billboard ranking this week.
Slowhand returns to the Blues Albums chart this week in America. Clapton's project nearly climbs back to the summit – where it didn't manage to find space just a few days ago – on the tally of the most consumed blues full-lengths and EPs in the nation, but it misses the top spot by just one space, and it's a somewhat surprising title that keeps him from reaching No. 1 again.
The soundtrack that accompanies the movie Sinners blocks Slowhand from another turn at No. 1. The album — built around the largely blues tracks performed in the Ryan Coogler-directed box office smash — has now spent five weeks on the Blues Albums chart. The full-length debuted in that position a month ago and has yet to budge from the top position.
While it was originally released in 1977, Slowhand didn't appear on the Blues Albums ranking until just a few months ago, in January of this year. The set has bounced on and off the genre-specific roster and has now spent seven nonconsecutive frames somewhere on the 15-spot list.
Three of those frames have seen it rule the tally, though interestingly, it didn't debut in first place. Clapton's full-length waited until April to reach the summit. When it did, it became his twelfth leader after first breaking in and becoming one of his 14 top 10s on the tally.
Throughout his career, Clapton has pushed 15 titles to the Blues Albums chart. Just one of them has missed out on the loftiest space on the roster.

Kid Cudi Says He Had a 'Death Wish' During Cocaine Overdose

Kid Cudi's cocaine addiction almost had fatal consequences. The "Mr. Rager" rapper, who released his memoir on Tuesday (August 12), appears on the August 13 episode of CBS Mornings, where he discusses nearly dying during a cocaine overdose. The near-death experience is also recounted in Cudi: The Memoir. COMPLEX SHOP: Shop the brands you love, anytime and anywhere. Uncover what's next. Buy. Collect. Obsess. "That was my life for a while, you know? I was running to the grave and I had a death wish," Cudi told CBS anchor Anthony Mason about his prior drug addiction. The Cleveland native called himself "dark and suicidal" while adjusting to fame. The memoir begins with Cudi recalling the overdose, which occurred in his New York apartment, while his career was "just starting." "I mean, the success was there, but happiness... I don't think I felt happy," he continued. Cudi added, "I hard time dealing with the fame, and the reason why I was doing cocaine was so I didn't blow my brains out." In an excerpt of the memoir via GQ, Cudi wrote that during the near-fatal overdose, he was "doing more coke than I ever had in my life." "I tried to get up off the bed, but my legs wouldn't work, so I collapsed to the floor and started to crawl," he wrote. "Eventually, I gave in and just laid on the ground. My heart was racing. It felt like it was going to burst any minute." At the time, Cudi was working on his sophomore album, Man on the Moon II, with the project's tone reflecting his "dark mindset." "I felt like I had demons latched on to me. I needed to soundtrack the moodiness I was feeling," he continued. Sicne growing out of that drug-fueled phase, Cudi has embraced a lighter tone in his newer music, like his upcoming eleventh solo project, Free, which releases on August 22. Justin Bieber Thanks Jesus for Having ‘Patience' With Him: ‘I Can Be Extremely Selfish'

What's more swag than showing gratitude and enjoying nature? On Tuesday (July 29), Justin Bieber did both. In a post on X, the pop star shared photos of himself taking a walk on a tree-lined path and wrote, 'Let's have a good day, let's go outside.' More from Billboard Justin Bieber's 'Swag': All 21 Tracks Ranked Justin Bieber's New Album Is First of More to Come: Everything We Know Stayin' Alive: Justin Bieber's 'Swag' Track 'Go Baby' Has 'Right Tempo' for Performing CPR 'Thanking Jesus for his patience with me this morning,' continued Bieber. 'I can be extremely selfish and impatient yet Jesus always has his arms open toward me.' The update comes about two weeks after the Canadian pop superstar surprise-dropped Swag — complete with 21 R&B-infused tracks — four years after he last released an album. The project debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and earned Bieber his biggest streaming week ever. At his side throughout the album's rollout has been Hailey Bieber, who is married to the Grammy winner. The model appeared alongside her husband on promotional billboards for Swag — along with their young son, Jack Blues — and shared a passionate kiss with Justin at a recent listening party. And when the LP first dropped, she showed support by writing on her Instagram Story, 'Is it finally clocking to you f—ing losers?' — a reference to the singer's viral 'standing on business' meme. Justin's latest post is far from the first time he's taken some time for self reflection on social media in recent months. In June, he posted about being 'broken' and having 'anger issues,' writing, 'Jesus is the only person who keeps me wanting to make my life about others.' Before that, he slammed the 'audacity' of haters who tell people what they 'should or shouldn't have,' declaring, 'God decides what we deserve.' Two months prior, he opened up about feeling like he was 'drowning' in 'hate' and struggling with feeling 'unworthy.' It's unclear what Justin's next moves will be after Swag, whether it's performing in support of the album or spending more time outdoors and typing out additional introspective posts. Sources did, however, recently tell Billboard that he still has more music left to release, possibly in the form of a more pop-inspired album. Kid Cudi Reflects on Near-Fatal Drug Overdose & Suicidal Thoughts: ‘I Was Not Planning to Live'

Kid Cudi hasn't been shy about his dependency on drugs or suicidal thoughts at various stages of his life in his music. His vulnerabilities endeared him to millions across the globe, helping fans who had similar experiences feel less alone. The Cleveland rapper completely takes the mask off and pulls back the curtain on his life in his upcoming Cudi the Memoir, which will be released on Aug. 12. GQ shared a harrowing excerpt of the book, which found Cudi reflecting on his darkest hours and a near-fatal drug overdose while working on Man on the Moon II circa 2010. 'After doing more coke than I ever had in my life I was losing all sense of what was real. I'd been alone in my New York apartment, crying for hours, listening to the Lykke Li song 'Time Flies' on repeat. It was a love song, but the melodies and her voice filled me with despair.' He continued in the excerpt: 'I tried to get up off the bed, but my legs wouldn't work, so I collapsed to the floor and started to crawl. Eventually, I gave in and just laid on the ground. My heart was racing. It felt like it was going to burst any minute. While Cudi's music can be the medicine of choice for fans, he was the one ultimately looking for a life raft. 'I was a role model, but I didn't feel like one. People called me their savior. But who was going to save me? I was a lighthouse for others, but I couldn't find my own way,' he added. 'It was peace I was after. Here, crippled on the floor, minutes from overdosing, was the closest I'd ever come to finding it. 'You made great music that people loved,' I thought, 'but this is the end.'' Elsewhere in the excerpt, Kid Cudi took fans back to sessions for 2015's Speedin' Bullet to Heaven, when he had been 'plotting' to die by suicide. 'After we'd finished a session, I'd be alone Googling exit bags. I was thinking about a way I could actually do it. I was plotting it,' he admitted. 'There's a song at the end of Speedin' Bullet where I say goodbye, and that was meant to be my final album. I was going to kill myself at the end of that album, or before it came out, or during that cycle. I was not planning to live that year. Not many people around me expected me to either.' Cudi's memoir arrives on Aug. 12, and then 10 days later, the multi-hyphenate entertainer will release his 12th studio album, Free, on Aug. 22.
