SST revision does not justify hotel rate hikes: MoF

The ministry clarified that the SST revisions effective July 1 do not include any change in the service tax applied to hotel accommodation or food and beverages (F&B) served at hotels.
Advertisement 'The SST revisions do not affect basic daily goods but may affect hotels indirectly through the expansion of service tax to cover rental on commercial properties and also sales tax on selected food items such as premium seafood and imported fruits. 'However, these indirect impacts are unlikely to translate to a 10 per cent to 15 per cent increase in costs faced by hotels,' MoF told Bernama when asked about a possible hike in hotel rates due to the extended SST. The ministry was responding to claims by hotels that they would need to raise room prices by 10 to 15 per cent following the revised tax structure. The MoF added that if hotels proceed to raise rates on the pretext of the SST, the government, through the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), will examine the matter to prevent unreasonable price increases. Media practitioners gather at KLCC for 58th AMM meetings
KUALA LUMPUR: Local and international media practitioners began gathering at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) today in conjunction with the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings, which run from Tuesday until July 11. A check by Bernama found that most members of the media arrived as early as 8 am to collect their accreditation passes and cover the media walkabout on facilities and logistics conducted by representatives from the Foreign Ministry. Mohammad Fikri Ali, a representative from RT, described the preparations at the IMC by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), in its role as IMC coordinator, as well-organised and systematic. 'Despite registering at the last minute, Bernama made the registration, vetting and security process very easy. Communications and dealings with ministry officials also went smoothly. The walkabout just now was very clear, especially for first-time participants,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Lok Sai Mun from Sin Chew Daily said the facilities at the IMC met the needs of media practitioners to perform their duties effectively. 'I feel the preparations and facilities this time are good, with a few new additions. I hope this round of meetings will run more smoothly,' she said. Yesterday, IMC coordinator Zaria Mohd Nasri said nearly 1,000 media personnel from both local and international organisations are expected to converge in the federal capital to cover the meetings. Zaria, who is also head of the Media Secretariat, said Bernama, as the official media and IMC coordinator for the meetings, is committed to ensuring the smooth setup and operations of the media and secretariat workspaces as planned. She added that the secretariat has provided online platforms for media access to event photos and ASEAN news at and A total of 24 meetings at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' level will be held, including those with ASEAN Dialogue Partners, ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partners and the ASEAN Secretariat. Around 1,500 delegates, including foreign ministers from ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste, are expected to attend. Malaysia will also host the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD IV), which will be co-chaired by Japan and focus on reconstruction efforts in Gaza. RM11.6 million allocated to YUM for micro credit this year

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the government remains committed to supporting YUM through sufficient funding to ensure its operations and loan services continue. Advertisement Under the 12th Malaysia Plan, YUM also received an additional RM10 million for its loan revolving fund, alongside the annual government grant for operational costs. Speaking at the Tuaran YUM Family Day on Saturday, Hajiji urged borrowers to repay their loans promptly to enable more people to benefit, noting that the current repayment rate exceeds 96 per cent. Mohe instructs universities to assess SST expansion's impact on students amid concerns of rising costs
SUNGAI PETANI, July 5 — The Ministry of Higher Education (Mohe) has instructed university vice-chancellors to conduct a detailed study to assess the impact of the expanded scope of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) on their students. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said the objective of the study is to determine whether the SST expansion, which came into effect on July 1, has directly or indirectly contributed to higher learning costs. 'We will examine in detail what is meant by the alleged increase in costs. What has been announced by the government relates to higher fees for international students coming to study in Malaysia due to increased tariffs or taxes on their education,' he said. 'We've already communicated this matter and gathered feedback. However, there may be other elements, either directly or indirectly, affecting local students as well,' said Zambry, who is also Barisan Nasional secretary-general and Umno Supreme Council member, to reporters after officiating the Umno Merbok Division meeting here today. Expanding on the matter, Zambry said the study would cover all aspects related to student learning, including utility costs such as electricity for those living in rental housing. Previously, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Student Representative Council president Mohamad Amar Aidid Mohd Zain was reported as saying that the expanded scope of SST, effective since Tuesday, was believed to have financial implications for students. According to Mohamad Amar Aidid, the inclusion of digital subscriptions, electronic repairs, laundry services and online purchases under the SST has had a direct impact on students' cost of living. Meanwhile, Zambry said the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint 2025–2035, developed by the ministry, has been finalised and is expected to be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim this November. On reports of university students being diagnosed with HIV, Zambry said the ministry is leaving it to the respective institutions to monitor the situation and take appropriate action. — Bernama
