Thieves strike at swimmer Bula Choudhury's home, make off with all medals, Padma Shri
1 2 Kolkata/Hindmotor: Thieves broke into the Hindmotor house of former ace swimmer Bula Choudhury and cleaned up her trophy cabinet that contained almost all her awards — over 150 medals and mementos that she had won during a career spanning more than a decade-and-a-half. The loss included the Padma Shri brooch she received in 2009 and 10 gold medals won at two editions of the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games. An inconsolable Choudhury said: "They took away things that are of no value to them but invaluable to me. From 1979, when I started competing as a nine-year-old, till I retired in 1995, all that I earned were medals. They are all gone." This is the third theft at the house christened 'Sundar Bari'. In 2014, there were two thefts at the house in a span of seven months. Jewellery, mementos and electronic items, including an LED TV, had been stolen. The accused had cut the back door. Chandernagore deputy commissioner of police Arnab Biswas said, "The house, located at the corner of a road, had been closed for about a month. It is unclear when thieves broke in." Police suspect two persons were involved. Five suspects have been picked up for interrogation. A CID team, along with forensic and fingerprint experts, is collecting evidence from the house. In 1991, she won six golds at the Colombo SAF Games. Choudhury went on to cross the English Channel in 1989 and again in 1999. In 1990, the Indian govt honoured her with Arjuna Award. CM flags off SBI cyber security awareness van in Raipur
Raipur: Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Saturday flagged off the SBI cyber security awareness van from his official residence in Raipur, formally launching a state-level campaign aimed at protecting citizens from online fraud and cybercrime. Speaking at the event, Sai underlined both the benefits and risks of rapid digitisation. "Technology has made life easier and transactions faster, but cyber frauds have also increased. With a little vigilance, people can protect themselves from falling prey to such crimes," he said. CM said that the campaign will use audio-visual messages, street plays, and puppet shows to educate the public about evolving methods of cyber fraud. He revealed that 29 hotspots across Chhattisgarh have been identified where cyber fraud incidents are more frequent, and the awareness van will focus its outreach in these areas. Appealing to citizens, Sai urged them not to share confidential banking details, passwords, or OTPs with anyone and to avoid clicking on suspicious links. "Cyber criminals keep inventing new ways to cheat people. A moment of carelessness can cost hard-earned savings. Our effort is to make more and more people alert and safe," CM said. The campaign, organised by the State Bank of India (SBI), will run from Aug 15 to Nov 30, 2025. The van will travel across all 33 districts of Chhattisgarh, spreading awareness about online scams and prevention measures. SBI officials present at the launch said the initiative reflects the bank's responsibility as "the banker to every Indian." Citizens were also informed that complaints of online financial fraud can be lodged through the national helpline number 1930. The event was attended by SBI deputy general manager Rakesh Sinha, assistant general manager Deepak Kumar Sinha, and other senior officials.
