Porsche-backed Group14 closes new funding, takes control of JV's battery material plant

Aug 20 (Reuters) - Group14 Technologies said on Wednesday it had raised $463 million in its latest financing round led by South Korean investment firm SK (034730.KS), opens new tab, as the silicon-based battery material startup aims to scale up production.
The startup said it also acquired the remaining 75% stake in its joint venture with SK, gaining full ownership of manufacturing operations for its silicon battery material in South Korea.
The Woodinville, Washington-based company makes silicon-carbon composite material or SCC55, which can replace graphite anodes in lithium-ion batteries, enabling them to charge more quickly and hold more energy.
Demand for electric vehicles and advanced technologies has driven steady investor interest in the battery materials sector, with multiple companies competing to attract funding.
Venture capital firms are also increasingly targeting alternative battery materials companies, which have the potential to reduce the cost and size of battery packs, similar to the technology developed by Group14.
The company did not reveal the valuation for its latest funding in its statement, but a source familiar with the matter told Reuters it was higher than the startup's value of more than $1 billion in a 2022 round.
The battery materials manufacturer had secured$614 million, opens new tab in its extended series C round in 2022, and the latest series D funding brings the total equity raised to more than $1 billion, the company said.
The new round, series D, also saw participation from existing investors such as Porsche Investments, ATL, OMERS, Decarbonization Partners, Lightrock Climate Impact Fund and Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund.
The battery active material (BAM) factory in South Korea produces Group14's SCC55 at EV scale. The company now fully owns three BAM factories, with the other two located in Washington.
"We're strengthening regional battery supply chains and safeguarding our customers from global trade uncertainty," CEO Rick Luebbe said.

Rupee to rise at open on soft dollar, favourable momentum

MUMBAI, Aug 21 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee is expected to inch higher at open on Thursday, helped by a slightly softer dollar and favourable momentum, though likely resistance at a key psychological level will cap gains. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated the rupee will open in the 87.02 to 87.04 range versus the U.S. dollar, compared with 87.0650 on Wednesday. Over the past week, the rupee has managed to shake off the pressure it has faced, though traders note there has been no single clear catalyst behind the recovery. Instead, they cite that a mix of stretched bearish bets and friendlier risk sentiment has allowed the currency to recover. The rupee climbed to a multi-week peak of 86.92 on Tuesday and managed to sustain most of that advance through Wednesday. The bias has shifted "slightly" in favour of the rupee, a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank said. "The big question is how sustainable this move will be, and most remain doubtful," he said. "The fact that it managed to hold around 87 yesterday should temper those doubts to an extent." The dollar index slipped on Wednesday, while Asian currencies traded mixed on the day. Attention in FX markets is fixed on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech on Friday, with investors largely convinced the Fed will cut rates next month. While Powell's recent remarks have been hawkish, those came before the weak July employment data that strengthened expectations for a 25 basis points cut at the September 16–17 meeting. "At Jackson Hole, Powell faces a immediate challenge. A September rate cut is fully priced by financial markets. Does he push back?," ING Bank said in a note. Minutes from the Fed's July meeting showed the two dissenters who wanted rate cuts had little support from other policymakers. KEY INDICATORS: ** One-month non-deliverable rupee forward at 87.14; onshore one-month forward premium at 12.25 paise ** Dollar index at 98.28 ** Brent crude futures up 0.4% at $67.1 per barrel ** Ten-year U.S. note yield at 4.29% ** As per NSDL data, foreign investors sold a net $1.4 million worth of Indian shares on Aug. 19 ** NSDL data shows foreign investors bought a net $6.4 million worth of Indian bonds on Aug. 19

India stock benchmarks set for muted open; Jackson Hole on tap

Aug 21 (Reuters) - India's equity benchmarks are set to open little changed on Thursday, following a five-session rally driven by tax-cut hopes, as investors await the Federal Reserve's annual symposium for rate trajectory cues. Gift Nifty futures was trading at 25,092 as of 07:58 a.m. IST, indicating that the Nifty 50 (.NSEI), opens new tab will open near Wednesday's close of 25,050.55. The Nifty and Sensex (.BSESN), opens new tab rose about 0.3% each on Wednesday, their fifth straight session of gains, as tech stocks rallied ahead of the Fed's Jackson Hole summit and consumer shares gained on hopes of a demand boost from the sweeping tax reforms. Asian peers advanced, with the MSCI Asia ex-Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS), opens new tab adding 0.4%. Overnight, U.S. equities dropped as a tech selloff extended into a second day. Investors will look for clues in Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech on Friday to determine if the central bank would trim interest rates by 25 basis points as expected in September. Lower U.S. rates make emerging markets, including India, more appealing to foreign investors. Foreign portfolio investors sold Indian shares worth 11 billion rupees ($126.4 million) on Wednesday, the third straight session of outflows. Domestic institutional investors bought Indian stocks worth 18.06 billion rupees, the 32nd straight session of inflows. Meanwhile, insurance companies could rise after a panel of Indian state ministers on goods and services tax proposed exempting tax on health and life insurance premiums for individuals. ** UltraTech Cement ( opens new tab says it will sell up to 6.49% stake worth up to $85.6 million in unit India Cements ( opens new tab. ** Computer Age Management Services ( opens new tabsecures, opens new tab Reserve Bank of India's approval to transfer its payments aggregator business to unit Camspay. ** Jupiter Wagons ( opens new tabgets, opens new tab order worth 2.15 billion rupees to supply 5,376 wheelsets for Vande Bharat trains. Global beauty firms look to carve up Indian market as 'last bastion' of growth

CHENNAI, Aug 21 (Reuters) - From Japan's Shiseido (4911.T), opens new tab to France's L'Oreal ( opens new tab, global cosmetics giants are doubling down on India, betting on the world's most populous nation as a key growth market for premium offerings while sales slow in developed economies. India's luxury beauty market is expected to quintuple to $4 billion by 2035 from $800 million in 2023, driven by its young, affluent, social-media savvy shoppers with rising disposable incomes, consulting firm Kearney and luxury beauty distributor LUXASIA say. Luxury beauty makes up just 4% of the $21-billion beauty and personal care market, compared with 8% to 24% across top Southeast Asian countries and 25% to 48% in developed markets including China and the United States. That means there is plenty of room for growth. "India is the last bastion of growth for premium beauty," said Sameer Jindal, managing director for investment bank Houlihan Lokey's corporate finance business in India. "The Indian consumer is willing to experiment and try out new things." U.S. beauty giant Estee Lauder (EL.N), opens new tab, home to the brands Clinique and MAC, expects a strong runway for expansion and long-term growth in India, even as it grapples with soft sales in the Americas and Asia-Pacific. "India today, within the Estee Lauder network, is looked at as one of the priority emerging markets," said country general manager Rohan Vaziralli, highlighting plans to initially target 60 million women in the nation of more than 1.4 billion. Homemaker R. Priyanka, based in the southern city of Chennai, said she was thrilled to have better access to Estee Lauder's Jo Malone London fragrance in India, as a benefit of the companies' efforts. "It is easier than asking someone (abroad) to get it for you every time," she added. While global beauty brands might have to modify some of their products for India, which bakes in sultry temperatures in summer and oppressive humidity at other times, they face little competition from homegrown brands. Kearney and LUXASIA identified only Forest Essentials and Kama Ayurveda as their major rivals, underscoring how domestic brands make up less than a tenth of luxury beauty sales. In the more established markets of China, Japan and South Korea by comparison, domestic brands account for a 40% share. "There is, of course, a premium perception gap between globally established brands and Indian brands," said Devangshu Dutta, founder of retail consultancy Third Eyesight. Global beauty giants' huge marketing budgets also give them an edge over domestic brands, other industry watchers said. Estee Lauder is studying online sales patterns to identify the smaller cities to target, such as Siliguri in West Bengal state, partnering with designers such as Sabyasachi Mukherjee, and launching products such as kohl, an eyeliner Indians favour. It has also invested in Forest Essentials, a brand with herbal ingredients, and in a programme offering funding to domestic beauty start-ups. This year France's L'Oreal said it was investing more in India and tapping into the "elevated beauty desires" of the nation's young, digitally savvy, empowered women shoppers to drive growth. It declined further comment. South Korea's Amorepacific ( opens new tab, known for brands such as Innisfree and Etude, is trying to leverage the Korean beauty craze in India with products geared to the market. These include items for the popular "cleanser, serum, moisturiser, and sunscreen" beauty regimen, the country head, Paul Lee, said. Japan's Shiseido, with a history of more than 150 years, brought its NARS brand to Indian beauty retailer Nykaa's ( opens new tab website this year, and plans to step up growth of its brands in the subcontinent. Global brands are very excited about India, where consumers are splurging more to stay on top of trends such as "cherry makeup", Nykaa co-founder Adwaita Nayar said, referring to a look featuring flushed cheeks, glossy lips, and soft pink eyes. Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab, which has also been seeing a big boom in beauty demand in India, aims to identify emerging global trends and bring in more brands, said Siddharth Bhagat, director of beauty and fashion at the e-commerce company in India. Retailer Shoppers Stop ( opens new tab, which also pioneers foreign labels, plans to open 15 to 20 beauty stores in each of the next three years to boost its revenue from the segment to a quarter from less than a fifth now, its beauty business CEO Biju Kassim said.
