Girl, 4, dies following incident at Waterworld in Stoke-on-Trent
Police said they were "called to Waterworld on Festival Way at around 4.20pm to reports of a girl, aged four, in a critical condition".
"Waterworld staff and colleagues from the West Midlands Ambulance Service treated the girl at the scene before paramedics took her to hospital for further treatment," officers added.
"Despite the best efforts of hospital staff, the girl died a short while later.
"The girl's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers."
Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Maskew from Staffordshire Police said: "Our thoughts are with the family at this terribly sad time.
"We are now making enquiries and looking to establish the circumstances of the incident. We would ask that members of the public avoid speculating in these early stages of the investigation and allow the family to grieve."
A Waterworld spokesperson said: "It is with great sadness that we learned of this little girl's passing this evening.
"All our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during these extremely difficult times. Waterworld is in shock and has decided to remain closed tomorrow out of respect for the family. Waterworld is working closely with the authorities at this sad time."
In a post on Facebook, Waterworld said the fatal incident happened at 4.15pm, "in the lagoon area of the aqua park".
The girl was "found unconscious and treated on poolside by our lifeguard and management teams on site.

"They immediately provided CPR and called the emergency services, who arrived around 4.20pm.
"All other visitors were asked to quietly leave the pool out of respect for the rescue operation underway, and we would like to thank them for their support and collaboration."
Waterworld describes itself on its website as "the UK's number one tropical indoor aqua-park".
It says it offers "an epic adventure for the whole family to enjoy, with over 30 different rides and attractions!"

"Two men were discovered with stab wounds shortly after 8.20pm on Sunday evening (3 August). "They were both taken to hospital with injuries which were not life-threatening and also arrested. "Alfie Evitts, 22, from Oldbury, has now been charged with wounding and possession of an offensive weapon. "He appeared before Wolverhampton Magistrates Court today and was remanded in custody ahead of a hearing at the city's Crown Court on 3 September. Third man tragically dies after horrific Dudley crash
A third man has sadly died following a three-vehicle collision in Upper Gornal this morning. The 22-year-old was taken to hospital but despite the efforts of medics has this afternoon passed away. Investigators are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the collision involving a Ford Transit van, a white Seat and a white Hyundai i20 vehicle, just after 7.30am today, Wednesday, August 6. The driver of the van was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been discharged. All three men who have died were in the Seat car. Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: 'This is a truly awful tragedy and our thoughts remain with loved ones of all those affected. 'Specialist family liaison officers are continuing to supporting them at this most dreadful time. "Investigations are progressing and we'd urge people not to speculate on the circumstances. Stoke Newington murder victim named
The victim of a fatal shooting in north London has been named by police. A murder investigation was launched after Erdal Ozmen, 45, was killed in Stoke Newington, the Metropolitan Police said. He was found with gunshot injuries by officers who were called to an address in Dynevor Road on Tuesday at 12.18am. The father-of-one was 'deeply loved by his family' detectives said on Wednesday as they appealed for witnesses to help find his killer. Residents said they woke to the sounds of gunshots. Mr Ozmen was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives say the motive for the murder remains unclear. No arrests have been made. Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams, who is leading the investigation, said: 'We continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward following the fatal shooting of Erdal. 'He was a father-of-one and was deeply loved by his family. 'Today, we are asking the public for assistance. Were you in the Dynevor Road area late on Monday night into early Tuesday morning? Did you see anyone acting out of the ordinary? 'Did you hear anything at all which perhaps seemed unusual – maybe people shouting, or a loud vehicle? 'The smallest piece of information could play a significant role in our investigation.' A post-mortem examination has not yet been carried out. Mr Ozmen's family are being supported by specialist officers. Liza Dodds, 58, a youth worker who lives opposite Dynevor Road, said: 'My husband woke up and said there was gunshots. The instant reaction was 'how do you know?' 'We both got up and had a look. A police officer was doing CPR where the person fell. It seemed like they were going forever.' Another resident said: 'I heard a few gunshots and the first thing I thought was that it was fireworks, because you don't expect it to be a gun. 'I was trying to sleep but then later I heard sirens from the police cars.' One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: 'We were out when it happened so we didn't hear or see anything. 'But when we came back at around 1am, the whole area was cordoned off and the police officers told us that it will be a crime scene for a couple of days.' Forensic officers in scrubs and masks were at the scene on Tuesday afternoon, alongside several police officers.
