Village primary school fire caused by solar panels
Solar panels were the cause of a blaze at a village primary school, the local fire service has said. Firefighters were called to East Bergholt VC Primary School, on School Lane, in East Bergholt, Suffolk, on 4 August at about 11:16 BST. Crews from Suffolk and Essex tackled the fire in a single-storey building that had spread under a flat roof. A spokesperson for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said the cause had been recorded as accidental and the result of solar panels installed on the roof. The spokesperson added that a number of the panels had been sent for further investigation. On the day of the fire, the school had been unoccupied and no casualties were reported. Images on social media showed thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky which could be seen as far away as the A12. Nigel Roberts, vice chair of the East Bergholt Parish Council, previously said he believed the source of the fire had been the solar panels. 132-year-old Minnesota church destroyed in fire
The Brief First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cosmos, Minnesota, burned down early Thursday morning. The Meeker County Sheriff's Office said authorities found the church engulfed in flames around 1:30 a.m. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still being investigated. COSMOS TOWNSHIP, Minn. (FOX 9) - A historic church in Cosmos, Minnesota that stood for more than 130 years burned to the ground overnight after a fire ripped through the structure. Photos of the church taken during the fire by Aaron Lueck can be seen below: Fire burns down Cosmos church Big picture view The Meeker County Sheriff's Office said the fire was reported by a passerby who "noticed a glow" while driving on Highway 4 at about 1:30 a.m. on Thursday. That passerby then checked the 54900 block of 145th Street in Cosmos Township and found the church engulfed in flames. The church is considered a total loss despite multiple fire departments responding to the blaze. No injuries were reported and officials say the cause of the fire is still being investigated. Several graves are located near the church, but the headstones were not damaged by the blaze. An ATF official said the Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office asked for their assistance in the fire investigation, prompting a certified fire investigator (CFI) from the ATF to respond to the scene. The ATF adds that while the Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office is the lead agency in the investigation, CFIs are "trained special agents who rapidly deploy to fire scenes to examine evidence, determine origin, and cause, and conduct complex forensic investigations." Meeker County historical records and congregation members say the church was built in 1893. Congregation speaks What they're saying "My mom was confirmed here, and then I was baptized here and I also had my confirmation, and then my own kids have been baptized here," said Quincy McNeil, a congregation member. "That tradition, that faith, as a family, with God has been outstanding, and so to see something like this, it just makes it so hard because now I know there won't be any more future memories at least with this church itself." Pastor Mindy Czycalla has faith that good things are ahead for the congregation, saying, "The church isn't just the building, the church is more so, the people, and the extension of them." 87-year-old Meeker man loses home in Elk fire: 2nd major fire disaster he's survived
MEEKER, Colo. (KDVR) — It's an incredible story of resilience coming out of the fire zone near Meeker, where 87-year-old Bob Kydd has now survived two major fire disasters. Last week, on Aug. 3, the Elk Fire destroyed his home, decades after he escaped the explosion at a famous lodge near Meeker back in 1991. Colorado Wildfire Map Bob chose to keep his privacy and did not want to speak on camera for an interview, but we spoke with neighbors who know him well. They say Bob is a quiet and independent man. The community's response to his recent loss has been an outpouring of support. A fundraiser raising more than $14,000 in less than a day. The loss is overwhelming for Bob. His home, a place of memories and solitude, now reduced to rubble and ashes. 'Bob's life in Meeker is pretty structured,' said neighbor Ryan Wix. 'He's got his routine and he remains up on the hill. He is pretty quiet within the community. Everyone who does know Bob and knows Bob from the Sleepy Cat, knows he is a wonderful individual.' Ryan talks about his early memories with Bob. 'Riding my mini bike up to Bob's house up on the ridge from the Sleepy Cat with my brother and dad. We would go up there and visit him. He was the cook and scone man at Sleepy Cats,' said Ryan. 'I got a lot of meals from him and a lot of scones full of honey. Other than that, through the years when Bob wasn't working, we would go visit him pretty frequently and spend some time with him up on the hill at his house.' New fire sparks in Rio Blanco County: Here's the status of all three fires He is known to many, but truly known by few. Rachel Wix, Ryan's wife, said, 'Some people joke he's kind of an urban legend. Everyone has heard of Bob Kydd, but not everybody knows Bob Kydd.' He lives about 16 miles from town. 'I talked to him earlier today, he wants to get up to his place, but his stomach hurt being there and seeing it,' said Ryan. 'He was hoping there was more left than there is, but unfortunately, it's very devastating up there.' Ryan and Rachel, along with other neighbors, witnessed the fire moving quickly over the ridge, leaving little time to evacuate. 'He (Bob) was a bit apprehensive to leave. I think he originally thought he fire was put out, he is certainly not on social media to get any notifications,' said Ryan. 'Bob really got out of there. My friend Kevin, along with his daughters, helped load up to get Bob to safety. Colorado National Guard mobilized to support Elk, Lee fire suppression efforts 'I would say it was within minutes when the fire reached,' Ryan recalled. 'It was visible and they could feel the heat as they were getting in, loaded up in the truck. I was there as the fire crested over the ridge. I knew Bob's place was likely gone at that point. It was a quiet time for Bob and us, and it was definitely a hard sight to see.' Moved by Bob's situation, neighbors started a way to help him out by starting a GoFundMe. 'It's really hard to see someone that is 87 years young lose his entire life,' Rachel said. 'That was really hard.' 'I think at the moment his plans are probably to hang tight in Meeker,' said Ryan. 'So, I think the future is a little uncertain as to what it would look like. I think with enough support, I don't think anything will feel like home, but we can do the best we can.'
