Archery event in Nikko replicates Japan's ancient history

NHK5 days ago
A traditional Japanese archery event was held in Nikko, a popular tourist destination north of Tokyo, to honor a legendary archer and feudal warrior.
The late 12th-century warrior Nasu no Yoichi, who belonged to the Minamoto clan, is said to have shot an arrow at a fan placed on a small boat at sea in a battle with the rival Heike clan.
The event is based on a legend that the warrior prayed to a shrine in what is now Nikko for success in hitting the target.
More than 1,800 archers from across the country took part in the annual event held on the shore of Lake Chuzenji on Monday.
After a Shinto priest and others opened the event with a demonstration, participants took turns shooting arrows at targets on boats on the lake about 30 meters from shore.
Spectators applauded each time an arrow hit the target.
A junior high school student from a nearby city said it was a fun to shoot an arrow in such a beautiful setting. He said it was difficult because he had to aim upward more than usual.

Traffic congestion peaks in Japan as people travel during Bon holidays

Congestion on expressways, trains and flights has peaked in Japan as people flocked to resorts and their hometowns during the annual Bon holidays. Japan Railway companies say congestion on Shinkansen bullet trains outbound from Tokyo peaked on Saturday. Trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line left Tokyo at almost full capacity from the morning through the early afternoon. Nozomi services with reserved seats only were the most crowded. Cars with non-reserved seats of many outbound trains on the Tohoku and Hokuriku Shinkansen Lines were carrying more passengers than their capacities from the morning through the early afternoon. Traffic jam along the outbound lanes of expressways is also expected to peak from Saturday through Sunday. Most domestic flights from Tokyo were also mostly packed on Saturday. All Nippon Airways had 91.5 percent of its seats booked, while Japan Airlines had 84.4 percent.

A walk through Kokura, the city spared nuclear destruction

On arrival in Kokura one December day, the skies are dark and threaten a storm. It's little surprise as the town, now embedded within the industrial megacity of Kitakyushu, sees cloudy conditions over half the days of the year. And during World War II, such weather saved the city from nuclear destruction. Hiroshima had always been the primary target for the first atomic bomb, as it was home to two Imperial Japanese Army headquarters and a strategic port. Originally scheduled for Aug. 11, the second atomic bomb targeting the city's Kokura Arsenal, a conventional and chemical weapons production center, was rescheduled to Aug. 9 due to a forecasted storm and poor flying conditions.

Ritsu Doan joins Eintracht Frankfurt on deal through 2030

Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday confirmed the signing of Japan winger Ritsu Doan until 2030 from Freiburg. Doan arrives for a reported fee of €20 million euros ($23.2 million). He made 123 appearances for Freiburg, scoring 26 goals and laying on 23 assists. The 27-year-old played a key role last season, netting 10 times and adding eight assists as Freiburg finished fifth in the Bundesliga to qualify for the Europa League. Doan is Frankfurt's second major signing after Jonathan Burkardt as it looks to cover for the loss of Hugo Ekitike, who left for Premier League champion Liverpool. "In the past few years Ritsu Doan has shown his high quality in the Bundesliga and brings a level of skill which will help us to achieve our goals," Frankfurt Sporting Director Markus Kroesche said in a statement. Doan has 57 caps for Japan, scoring 10 goals. Frankfurt plays its final preseason friendly on Saturday away at Premier League side Fulham, before opening its Bundesliga campaign at home against Werder Bremen on August 23.
