Drake Bell opens up to Josh Peck about sexual abuse allegations during Nickelodeon days

Yahoo25-03-2025
Millennials, rejoice: Drake & Josh are talking things out.
One year after Drake Bell revealed in Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV that he was sexually abused as a child actor during his Nickelodeon tenure, he appeared on his former co-star Josh Peck's podcast, Good Guys, co-hosted with Ben Soffer, to discuss the trauma, their hot-and-cold friendship and the show's legacy.
'This is going to be like therapy,' Bell said at the top of the episode, which premiered on March 24.
Through the years, Bell and Josh have aired their grievances, with the takeaway being that while their names will forever be linked, their friendship — from working together as children on a show that debuted over 20 years ago (and The Amanda Show before that) — faded. During the conversation, they acknowledged that even while on Drake & Josh things were complicated as they navigated stardom, adolescence and Bell reporting Nickelodeon dialogue coach Brian Peck (no relation to Josh) for sexual abuse.
'There were times when we hung out a lot and we were close, and then there were times when, not for any reason, [we] just weren't,' Bell said. 'We were dealing with a lot of shit outside of our … working [relationship].'
Bell explained that between The Amanda Show ending in 2002 and Drake & Josh premiering in 2004, he told his mother about being sexually assaulted by Brian Peck, who was 26 years his senior, and they went to police. During the investigation, Brian continued to come to the set — and teen Bell had to proceed like it was business as usual.
'When we shot the pilot, we were in the middle of the investigation, but nobody [knew] anything because Brian hadn't been arrested,' Bell said. 'The worst part about it [was] having the monster in [my] safe place,' on the set where he and Josh would 'goof around and put on our masks and wigs and makeup and make people laugh.'
He continued, 'Every day I got there [and] the monster was there. … He's walking around set.'
So what should have been this great experience for them was just the opposite because of the background drama that was Bell's secret.
'I'm entering the Drake & Josh phase, where we should be … partners. This is our time. Let's do it. [But] I came back to the same stage, the same parking lot, the same dressing rooms… Everything's triggering,' Bell said. 'And in the back of my head the whole time I'm working on the pilot, I know that there's this investigation happening [and] this guy's about to get arrested [and] that shit is about to hit the fan and nobody in here knows it. And I'm 14 or 15.'
Bell said he 'was losing my hair' and had 'golf-ball size scabs' on his head from the stress.
Josh said because he didn't know what was happening, 'I was just looking at it through the prism of a 14-year old's brain going: 'Ah, he doesn't want much to do with me.''
Brian pleaded no contest to performing a lewd act with a 14- or 15-year-old and oral copulation with a minor under 16 in 2004. At his sentencing, Brian had a room of supporters and had submitted about 40 letters from well-known people in the industry attesting to his good character, which made Bell feel even more alone and confused.
The identity of the minor 'John Doe' was mostly a secret. Josh, who was also largely in the dark, talked about not knowing what to make of Brian, who had been 'everpresent' on the set, suddenly disappearing. (Brian served 18 months in prison.)
'I didn't know anything except I had a feeling something happened,' Josh said. 'I remember we're in the car … and I said: 'Do you still talk to Brian?' And you just looked at me [and said] 'No, Brian's a really bad guy.' And I remember thinking, 'Gotcha.' It was all that I needed to know.'
Josh talked about their being 'many inappropriate things' going on in the kid-centric workplace and an overall 'lack of protection.' Josh said it was 'absolutely insane' that those types of things 'could have been allowed in any respect. At 14, I remember going, This relationship is inappropriate.'
However, Josh said there were 'so many microinfractions … that you would see on set in a day and just go, I don't know that that would be cool anywhere else, but here, yeah. And so when you had tyrannical bosses or just people acting inappropriately, I think the assumption was in Hollywood this was just kind of part of it.'
They talked about how, despite the backstage goings-on, the show they created as kids holds up in many ways and how they feel fortunate they were able to make it, but you couldn't avoid the downside.
'There's also the truth of everything you went through and everything that was an experience for a kid that was unacceptable in so many ways,' Josh said.
He continued, 'I remember people would ask me about the show [in the years after it ended] and I would say, 'Well, I lost 100 pounds and had to get sober at 21. Did I seem happy? It's a bit of a sign.' But [I also think]: How much do I just keep this to myself and allow this wonderful memory for people to just continue to exist?'
Bell said he also wrestles with that but doesn't want what happened to him to ruin the show, which he holds close to his heart.
'I had a lot of people reaching out, [saying], 'Oh, don't worry, Drake, we'll never watch the show ever again [because we know] what you were going through while you were making [it],' he said. 'I'm like: Whoa, whoa. No, no, no, no, no. When [it was] lights, camera, action and I walk in and Josh is wearing a dress, that … was where I actually was comfortable and happy and stoked. I'm very proud of what we did. I loved the show.'
Josh added, 'It was very special — and you can't re-create it.'
Part one of the interview is now available; part two will follow on March 27.

Josh Brolin Says WEAPONS Is the Antidote to Streaming Movie Burnout: 'It's All the Same Sh*t" — GeekTyrant

When it comes to his opinion on the state of streaming movies, Josh Brolin thinks Weapons , the latest horror film from Zach Cregger, might just be the jolt audiences need. "Right now, with so much content, you're just watching things on whatever streaming service you're on, and you're just going, 'F*ck, why is this so boring, man? Why?' And just go to the next thing. It's all the same shit," "And then somebody not only takes the horror genre, but then f*cks with it and then does something on the edge of absurdity, and it's sort of humorous, so it's keeping you off-[balance] enough for him to have an emotional impact, ultimately." Weapons really is one of the most original and unsettling movies of the year, and it's set in the small town of Maybrook after a classroom full of children mysteriously vanishes at 2:17am., leaving only one survivor. The film weaves together multiple perspectives, showing how different characters react to the unnerving disappearance. According to Brolin, those reactions come from a deeply personal place. "I know that the story came from something that was very emotional for Zach. When I met with Zach after I read, I thought, a really well-designed script, he told me that every character is based off a certain reaction that he was having to a very traumatic event that happened to him. I thought that was really cool. He just personalized it for me." Weapons has earned a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes and pulled in more than $70 million worldwide during opening weekend, easily surpassing its $38 million budget. If you haven't seen this movie yet, you should because it's a great freakin' movie! It will snap audiences out of their streaming fatigue. Brolin enjoyed working with Cregger so much that he's already open to teaming up again. "I think from here on out, you know, we'll see what Zach does. I have a tendency to work with directors more than once, so we'll see what the future holds.' Weapons also stars Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan. Trailer for MARTY SUPREME - Timothée Chalamet Chases Ping Pong Glory in Josh Safdie's A24 Drama — GeekTyrant

A24 has dropped the first trailer for Marty Supreme , the latest from Uncut Gems director Josh Safdie, with Timothée Chalamet playing a man obsessed with proving himself in the unlikely arena of 1950s competitive ping pong. Chalamet plays Marty Mauser, a dreamer whose ambitions are dismissed by everyone around him, but who's determined to carve out a name in a game few take seriously, at least in America. While never officially confirmed, the story is said to draw loose inspiration from legendary pro player Marty Reisman. The trailer opens with Marty, in a royal hotel suite, calling a movie star played by Gwyneth Paltrow to declare he's 'something of a performer' too. Later, he tells his love interest, played by Odessa A'zion, 'I have a purpose, and if you think that's some sort of blessing, it's not. It means I have an obligation to see a very specific thing through, and with that obligation comes sacrifice.' In another moment, Marty tries to sell the sport's potential to Kevin O'Leary, saying: 'I know it's hard to believe, but I'm telling you, this game, it fills stadiums overseas. And it's only a matter of time before I'm staring at you from the cover of a Wheaties box.' Marty Supreme boasts a stacked and eclectic cast that includes Tyler, The Creator, Penn Jillette, Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard, and filmmaker Abel Ferrara. Safdie co-wrote the script with Ronald Bronstein, producing alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet, and A24. The film opens in theaters on Christmas Day 2025.

I need new Paramount + series Avatar: Seven Havens like it was yesterday, and not just because I hated Netflix's live-action remake of The Last Airbender

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. San Diego Comic Con 2025 has confirmed a new spinoff series from the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe will air on Nickelodeon then stream on Paramount+ in 2027, called Avatar: Seven Havens. As of writing, we've got three Avatar: The Last Airbender related projects in the works. On top of the new spinoff, there's seasons 2 and 3 of Netflix's live action Avatar: The Last Airbender and standalone movie The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, both due to be released in 2026. In Avatar: Seven Havens, we get to relive the glory of the original 2005 animation all over again, with a new young Earthbender who discovers she is the next Avatar after Korra, who was first introduced in The Legend of Korra. Original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are also returning for the project, which will split its 26 episodes across two seasons. To top it all off, the first-look image confirms that the series is sticking to the classic 2D animation style that made it so popular in the first place. So far, so good. Avatar: Seven Havens isn't putting a step wrong, and that should send alarm bells ringing at Netflix HQ. It's fair to say the reviews for season 1 of their Avatar adaptation were mixed at best, but with hype dying down before Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 even comes out, it's Paramount+'s time to shine. Avatar: Seven Havens is already running rings around Netflix's The Last Airbender remake While I love rewatching the original cartoon whenever I can, I don't think I'll ever watch Netflix's version of Avatar: The Last Airbender again. The heart was completely missing, the chemistry between its bulging ensemble cast was barely there, and the storyline was incredibly ropey in too many season lulls, despite the visuals largely holding strong. As far as we're aware, season 2 is still in production, but Netflix is now set to be second-best to Seven Havens unless it gets its act together in the next two years. Sure, it's not M. Night Shyamalan levels of awful (lest we forget his 2010 movie version), but why would fans not invest in an extension of the original animation instead? Seven Havens appears committed to elevating Aang's story to align with what's going on in 2025 society already feels second to none. Here's the full plot: 'Set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. A young Earthbender discovers she's the new Avatar after Korra – but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity's destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization's last strongholds collapse.' If Seven Havens is as full of wonder, whimsy, and meaning as it's promising, then we could well see Netflix's Avatar viewership dwindle. Frankly, I'll be one of the fans who's more than happy to jump ship… it's been a long time since the journey to becoming the Avatar has filled our cup like it should.
