Should the Government Stop Subsidizing a Car Feature That ‘Everyone Hates'?
If you've ever noticed a gas-powered engine shutting off during a red light, that's the start-stop feature. Its adoption has skyrocketed since 2012, when the Environmental Protection Agency started subsidizing the feature with credits to manufacturers.
Note: The start-stop credit was finalized in a 2012 rule that made the 2014 model year the first year eligible, although older cars were later awarded the credit retroactively.

But under the Trump administration, the agency is threatening to eliminate those credits. In a post on X, the agency's administrator, Lee Zeldin, said that start-stop technology was just a 'climate participation trophy' for companies, and that 'everyone hates it.'
Though the technology has its skeptics, research says it does effectively cut fuel consumption and emissions. Most studies on start-stop technology show real-world fuel use reductions of 5 to 10 percent, depending on driving patterns. One study found that start-stop begins to save fuel when the engine is off for as little as seven seconds during an idling period.
But if the E.P.A. ends its credits, could it spell doom for the feature? And where would that leave automakers and drivers?
Most of the complaints fall in a few categories. Some skeptics believe that it doesn't really save on gas, or that it adds wear and tear to the engine. Others worry about not having control of the car, or about having the air-conditioning turn off with the engine on hot days.

Tesla brings its robotaxi service to San Francisco (sort of)
Tesla has rolled out a ride-hailing service in San Francisco, but the lack of a permit to allow it to accept fares from passengers means that it can't yet call it a robotaxi service. The first Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars hit the streets of San Francisco on Thursday, just over a month after the launch of its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, where it does have the proper permits. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) stated recently that at the current time, Tesla has to have a safety driver behind the wheel for testing, as well as to transport members of the public, Reuters reported. The regulator added that the automaker has to undertake a pilot phase that imposes no charges on passengers before applying for full-autonomous permits, a process that Reuters says took competitors such as Waymo 'years' to complete. Tesla is inviting employees' friends and family, and select members of the public, to participate in the early stage of the service. In June, the automaker launched its first robotaxi service in Austin, with a safety monitor sitting in the front passenger seat, not the driver's seat. And unlike the Tesla's ride-hailing cars in San Francisco, Austin's Model Y vehicles have 'robotaxi' branding on the side. Musk said recently that Tesla is planning to get permits to launch its robotaxi service in a number of states, including not only California but also Nevada, Arizona, and Florida. In California, strict regulations have prevented Musk from experiencing the kind of rapid robotaxi rollout that was possible in Texas. Essentially, the San Francisco launch appears to be a strategic move by Tesla to maintain momentum in the autonomous-vehicle sector.

Chinese EVs Recover in Europe to Pre-Tariff Market Share Level
Chinese automakers surpassed a 10% share of Europe's electric-vehicle market in June, marking a full comeback from tariffs set in place last year by the European Union. Manufacturers led by BYD Co. captured 10.6% of all EV registrations in the region, based on figures from industry researcher Dataforce. That was the highest since the record 11.1% in June of last year, when carmakers rushed Chinese-built EVs into the bloc to beat EU duties imposed to counter state aid.

Japan to Seek Car Tariff Cut, Secure Automakers' Competitiveness
Japan will keep pressing the US to cut tariffs on cars and auto parts to 15% as promised in a trade deal and work to ensure the nation's automakers remain competitive against their rivals, according to the nation's chief trade negotiator. 'We will continue to urge the US side to promptly take measures to implement the recent agreement, including the reduction of tariffs on cars and car parts,' Ryosei Akazawa said on Friday in Tokyo. 'We want the US to fulfill its commitments, and Japan will also do what we promised to do.'
