Daily Record09-05-2025

The stylish set for the garden has a massive discount and is perfect for summer days
An outdoor garden set where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine is something lots of homeowners will have on their wish list right now. The extended period of good weather is making the garden a very attractive place to be and having a stylish and comfortable place to enjoy it is the dream.
The downside is garden furniture can be an expensive investment. A set with a hefty reduction is an attractive option if you're on a budget but still want a show stopping set for your outdoor space.

Rattan furniture is a great option as it is hard wearing for outside settings but also looks good too. Right now shopping marketplace Yimbly has a huge £355 discount on the stunning Artemis Home Della Grey Rattan Corner Sofa + Stool.

The retailer, which is owned by the Daily Record parent company Reach Plc, is selling the light grey set with a hefty discount. The set offers 'style and comfort' with its matching cushions and handy footstool which can also be used as a table.
The rattan outdoor furniture usually retails for £849.99, however, it's currently on offer for £549 as part of Yimbly's spring sale, reports The Express.
Shoppers can also save an extra £55 on the set when they enter this month's special 10 per cent discount code MAY10 at the checkout, bringing the overall price of the garden sofa set down to £494.99.

Yimbly says the set is 'easy to assemble with comprehensive instructions' and comes with free express delivery to ensure a 'swift setup'.
The included footstool can also double up as a coffee table, perfect for setting a tray of refreshing drinks and nibbles on. The sofa is right hand facing.
For shoppers looking for garden furniture in a black rattan colourway, B&Q is selling the EVRE Black Rattan Outdoor Garden Furniture Set for £469.99. It comprises a four-seater sofa, coffee table and a cover.

A more budget-friendly alternative is Dunelm's Rattan Sofa Lounger Set which costs £329. It's available in grey or natural and includes a three-seater sofa, a footstool and a table.
There are currently no reviews for the Artemis Home Della Grey Rattan Corner Sofa + Stool on the Yimbly website, however over on Trustpilot, shoppers are full of praise for the retailer which has earned an overall rating of 4.3.

One buyer rated the online marketplace five stars and said their purchase was 'very well made and sturdy' and that it 'should last for years'.

"Arrived really quickly, price was great and the quality is really nice," wrote another happy buyer, however they did go on to note: "The assembly instructions weren't the clearest to follow, but I worked it out and I am very pleased with how it looks. I'm sure it will last."

Unfortunately, one customer was left unimpressed, as they explained: "Very disappointing. My new small table and chair set is so flimsy that a gust of wind will easily take it into my neighbour's garden."
Another shopper, however, was delighted with their service, as they said: "Great swing chair, prompt delivery. The chair was actually assembled by the delivery team, which was great."
The Artemis Home Della Grey Rattan Corner Sofa + Stool can be purchased from Yimbly here for £494.99 when the discount code MAY10 is entered at the checkout.

Firm at centre of NHS corruption scandal moves business to new company as directors jailed

Four men were jailed for a total of 29 years following a major investigation into the award of lucrative NHS contracts to Ayrshire-based telecommunications firm, Oricom. The firm at the centre of a £6m NHS corruption scandal is set to move its business to a new company linked to its jailed directors. Four men found guilty following a major investigation into the award of lucrative NHS contracts to an Ayrshire-based telecommunications firm were jailed for a total of 29 years on Thursday. ‌ Oricom directors Adam Sharoudi, 41, and Gavin Brown, 48, secured major deals with the illegal help of NHS telecoms chiefs Alan Hush, 68, and 60 year-old Gavin Cox. ‌ The probe was first revealed by the Daily Record after an NHS counter fraud team swooped on Oricom's offices in Irvine in 2015. Now a letter to customers from a current Oricom boss has revealed the service is to be managed by a company called Freestyle Communications Limited. Service Delivery Director David Ross said the change, set to take place from June 19, was 'part of a long-term plan to improve how we deliver your service'. Convicted directors Brown and Sharoudi were named on Companies House as having 'significant control' of Freestyle in May 2023, but filed a cessation in August last year. Prosecutors proved, during a mammoth three-month trial, that contracts for the supply and maintenance of telecoms equipment by Oricom broke rules on financial wrongdoing in the tendering process. ‌ Hush was jailed for eight years after being found guilty of nine charges. Cox was locked up for six years for the two jurors convicted him of. Sharoudi was also handed an eight year term having been convicted of seven charges. Brown was jailed for seven years for a total of six. Lord Arthurson said: "The reach and character of the corruption and, in particular, the corrupt relationship engaged by all of you was on a grand scale.' ‌ Hush was the telecommunications manager at NHS Lothian and then NHS Scotland video conferencing manager. Cox held the post of head of IT and infrastructure at NHS Lanarkshire. The pair abused their powers as 'public servants' to push deals through. One contract alone was worth £3.1m. In return, Hush got £18,231 of cash bungs and gifts, Cox a total of more than £70,000. ‌ All four men had denied the charges, spanning between 2010 and 2015, included bribery, corruption, fraud, theft as well as others under the Proceeds of Crime Act. In Oricom's letter to customers, Ross said the firm was 'moving to a dedicated telecoms management company focused solely on service delivery and support'. He said: 'Your contract terms, pricing, and service all remain unchanged. You'll continue to receive uninterrupted service. You'll still have access to the same support team under the new structure. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! By moving your account to Freestyle Communications, we're simplifying operations and placing service management in the hands of a team 100% focused on telecoms. ‌ 'Freestyle Communications is part of the same group and is fully regulated by Ofcom.' Current directors of Freestyle are named as Ross, Stephanie Brown and Simon Agnew. Brown and Sharoudi resigned as directors of Oricom earlier this month, following their convictions at the High Court in Glasgow. They have also been banned from being a company director for the next 10 years and will face proceeds of crime proceedings. Over 250 witnesses were also interviewed and tens of thousands of text messages and emails reviewed as part of the probe. Gordon Young, Head of NHS Scotland Counter Fraud Services it was a 'landmark conviction' of 'individuals who sought to exploit the NHS for personal gain'. We approached Oricom for comment.

Scottish city to transform its skyline to become UK's 'mini New York'

Glasgow is set to grow taller with plans for new skyscrapers in Charing Cross, Anderston Quay, Trongate and Cowcaddens. Glasgow's skyline could soon rival that of New York as city chiefs unveil bold plans to welcome high-rise development and reshape the urban horizon. Already arranged in a grid pattern reminiscent of the Big Apple, Scotland's largest city now appears ready to grow upwards as confidently as it has grown outwards. ‌ A newly published Tall Building Designs Guide from Glasgow City Council pinpoints four strategic areas, Charing Cross, Anderston Quay, Trongate and Cowcaddens, as front-runners for future skyscraper schemes, Express reports. ‌ The move marks a decisive break from previous decades, when building heights were curbed well below those seen in comparable European cities. By relaxing those limits, planners hope to bring fresh energy, investment and people into the heart of Glasgow. At present, the city's tallest building is Buchanan Wharf in Tradeston, which rises to 80 metres and also holds the title of Scotland's tallest building. Yet even that landmark is dwarfed by the UK's loftiest structures, such as The Shard in London, soaring to nearly 310 metres, and Deansgate Square South Tower in Manchester at 201 metres. The tallest structure in Glasgow overall remains the Science Centre's Glasgow Tower, a 127-metre needle that can rotate a full 360 degrees, the highest fully revolving tower anywhere in the world. Council leaders say the new guidance reflects a 'significant' shift in strategy, aimed squarely at addressing the city's relatively low centre-city population density, which they argue has long hampered economic momentum. 'Glasgow is unique among Scottish cities in having the scope to build upwards,' officers note in the report. 'Shaped by this Tall Buildings guidance, it is confidently expected the city skyline will change, building towards the kind of city-centre population density that is commonplace in European cities, and the comparable lack of which is an acknowledged barrier to growth in the UK.' ‌ The document also presses for more mixed-use projects, encouraging developers to weave retail and leisure venues into ground floors to boost daytime buzz and evening footfall alike. Councillors on the City Administration Committee are due to vote on final approval soon, a decision likely to set the tone for Glasgow's skyline for decades. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! 'Tall buildings will play a significant role in our ambition to grow the city centre population, and encouraging major construction projects will be a boost for the local economy and employment,' he said. 'Having clear parameters of what we will support, and where, will give clarity to residents and assurances to those who wish to invest and develop in our city. "Glasgow is very much open for business, and if we want to see a thriving city, then we need to build it.'
