Firm at centre of NHS corruption scandal moves business to new company as directors jailed
Four men were jailed for a total of 29 years following a major investigation into the award of lucrative NHS contracts to Ayrshire-based telecommunications firm, Oricom.
The firm at the centre of a £6m NHS corruption scandal is set to move its business to a new company linked to its jailed directors.
Four men found guilty following a major investigation into the award of lucrative NHS contracts to an Ayrshire-based telecommunications firm were jailed for a total of 29 years on Thursday.
Oricom directors Adam Sharoudi, 41, and Gavin Brown, 48, secured major deals with the illegal help of NHS telecoms chiefs Alan Hush, 68, and 60 year-old Gavin Cox.
The probe was first revealed by the Daily Record after an NHS counter fraud team swooped on Oricom's offices in Irvine in 2015.
Now a letter to customers from a current Oricom boss has revealed the service is to be managed by a company called Freestyle Communications Limited.
Service Delivery Director David Ross said the change, set to take place from June 19, was 'part of a long-term plan to improve how we deliver your service'.
Convicted directors Brown and Sharoudi were named on Companies House as having 'significant control' of Freestyle in May 2023, but filed a cessation in August last year.
Prosecutors proved, during a mammoth three-month trial, that contracts for the supply and maintenance of telecoms equipment by Oricom broke rules on financial wrongdoing in the tendering process.
Hush was jailed for eight years after being found guilty of nine charges. Cox was locked up for six years for the two jurors convicted him of. Sharoudi was also handed an eight year term having been convicted of seven charges. Brown was jailed for seven years for a total of six.
Lord Arthurson said: "The reach and character of the corruption and, in particular, the corrupt relationship engaged by all of you was on a grand scale.'
Hush was the telecommunications manager at NHS Lothian and then NHS Scotland video conferencing manager. Cox held the post of head of IT and infrastructure at NHS Lanarkshire. The pair abused their powers as 'public servants' to push deals through. One contract alone was worth £3.1m.
In return, Hush got £18,231 of cash bungs and gifts, Cox a total of more than £70,000.
All four men had denied the charges, spanning between 2010 and 2015, included bribery, corruption, fraud, theft as well as others under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
In Oricom's letter to customers, Ross said the firm was 'moving to a dedicated telecoms management company focused solely on service delivery and support'.
He said: 'Your contract terms, pricing, and service all remain unchanged. You'll continue to receive uninterrupted service. You'll still have access to the same support team under the new structure.

Current directors of Freestyle are named as Ross, Stephanie Brown and Simon Agnew. Brown and Sharoudi resigned as directors of Oricom earlier this month, following their convictions at the High Court in Glasgow.
They have also been banned from being a company director for the next 10 years and will face proceeds of crime proceedings. Over 250 witnesses were also interviewed and tens of thousands of text messages and emails reviewed as part of the probe.

Restaurant at ‘flagship' Saundersfoot harbour approved
A CALL to turn a vacant unit at a Pembrokeshire seaside village's flagship marine centre of excellence into a high-quality seafood restaurant has been given the go-ahead by the national park. In an application to Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Red Roses-based Rhianwen Lane of Catch Cymru sought permission for a change of use of Unit 21, Marine Centre of Excellence, Saundersfoot Harbour, Saundersfoot to a food and drink establishment with indoor seating and a takeaway. The proposal was supported by Saundersfoot Community Council. A supporting statement with the application said: 'Catch Cymru is an established, independent seafood business based in Carmarthen, with a strong reputation for high-quality takeaway seafood. 'As a result of the success and demand for our current operation, we are now looking to expand by opening a second restaurant in Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire. 'Our aim for this new shop is not only to replicate our successful takeaway model but also to enhance the customer experience by providing a unique, seaside dining experience that will appeal to both locals and tourists alike. 'In addition to our existing offerings of fried fish and chips, the Saundersfoot restaurant will offer a broader menu, including seasonal grilled and barbequed fish, fresh salads, and a variety of side dishes to cater to a wider demographic, to include halloumi fries, corn on the cob etc. 'This expansion will also allow us to continue our popular takeaway service while providing a casual dine-in atmosphere with a drinks menu that features locally sourced beers and IPAs.' The application says a key feature of the menu at the dog-friendly restaurant will be 'Catch of the Day' specials, 'based on the freshest seafood available from the local harbour,' giving customers 'a unique experience and encourage repeat visits knowing that we support local fishermen'. It also plans to host live music events from local artists on selected weekends, especially during peak season and bank holidays to 'help create a dynamic and engaging atmosphere that encourages customers to linger, enjoy their food and drinks, but most importantly return for more'. An officer report recommending approval said the change of use of an existing chandlery from A1(Shop) to A3 (Food & Drink) 'will ensure that the vacant unit within the Marine Centre of Excellence is brought back into use and positively contribute to the character of Saundersfoot Harbour'. The Marine Centre of Excellence was given planning consent in 2016, subject to a condition which restricts the available retail floor space and its use. The report says a viability statement from the Saundersfoot Harbour Authority' detailed how the unit was no longer viable for A1/A2 use and that an A3 use would provide vitality and vibrancy to the harbourside location'. It finished: 'The proposed development will have no adverse impact on the special qualities of the National Park and will positively contribute to the character of Saundersfoot Harbour. 'A seafood business would fit within the character of the seafront at the Marine Centre of Excellence and will bring a vacant unviable retail unit back into use providing a benefit to the community and local economy.' The application was conditionally approved by park planners.

Paedo lawyer worked at charity accused of ignoring child sex harassment claims
The Scots lawyer also ran a rugby club near Glasgow. A paedophile lawyer worked for a Government-backed youth charity embroiled in accusations it failed to handle claims of child sexual harassment. Alan Eccles, from Giffnock near Glasgow, was spared jail after pleading guilty to three charges and sentenced to 300 hours of community service at Paisley Sheriff Court last week. He admitted to engaging in grossly offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing conversations about the sexual abuse of children, sharing indecent photos of children and an intimate picture of a woman between October 22 and November 14, 2023. The Sunday Mail can reveal Eccles, 44, worked for the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) as a legal adviser for several years until at least late 2023. The SYP has come under fire for failing to handle previous allegations of sexual harassment by its young members. After allegations about a former SYP chief were published by the Sunday Mail in 2022, the organisation vowed to carry out a policy review to ensure it had acted properly on the claims. The review was done while Eccles was working for it but a spokesman insisted he played no part in the review. Eccles, who was a partner at law firm Brodies until 2020, was also the director of the Glasgow Hutchesons' Aloysians Rugby Football Club (GHA RFC) until April this year, resigning just weeks before admitting to his vile child sex abuse crimes. During his time at the club he was involved in governance reviews for the organisation. A spokesman for the SYP said: 'Alan Eccles served as an external legal adviser to the SYP executive and board until late 2023. At no point did he interface with the broader SYP membership or any member data. 'While none of the charges relate to SYP, we have continually strengthened our safeguarding guidelines and procedures in line with evolving national child protection policies.'
