'We need to fight fire with fire' - Jake White wants more overseas stars at the Bulls

Bulls coach Jake White says he needs more international players in his squad if he is to turn silver into gold in the United Rugby Championship.
For years, White has been banging the same drum regarding the need to bring home star players from overseas to strengthen the South African squads.
He pointed out the example of Leinster having players of the calibre of Springbok Viking RG Snyman on the bench.
'The lesson I've taken from that is the one I've been telling you for a long time,' White said after his team had been pummeled 32-7 in the URC final in Dublin.
'We need more international players to play in our province,' White said. 'I need what Leinster have. I need to be able to fight fire with fire.
'Leinster, Toulouse, La Rochelle… What do you think you need to win those games? Academy players or seasoned internationals? I think the biggest cheer tonight was for Jordie Barrett – he's not Irish.
'I'd love to be able to sit in a coaches box and 19-nil up, say 'RG, warm up', and then put him on and let him menace the defence like he did tonight. That has been from the day I took over this job. I keep banging the same drum, guys.'
The disappointed coach said that he felt like he was watching a horror movie.
'We got the 40 minutes the Leinster supporters were waiting for the whole season. It was like watching a horror movie, and you hope the ending will be different. This was Test-level rugby. It was like everything was played in fast forward.'
You have to understand, Leinster are not a normal rugby team,' White explained.
'They're well-coached, and they're fantastic guys as well. I mean, world-class. So, yeah, it's all credit to them. Since I started here at this level with the URC, Leinster have been the benchmark, and tonight they showed it again.
'I've now got three silver medals. I've got to try and find out how to turn silver into gold now.'
When the Bulls lost to Glasgow in last season's final in Pretoria, White was visibly shaken, but the comprehensive nature of this defeat in Dublin has made it easier for him to handle.
'I'm less gutted because I think people are so naïve. I don't know what's changed from four years ago to now. Back then, we played Leinster and we lost 31-3 at the Aviva Stadium.
'So we've got four years older, and believe it or not, they've got four years older. Maybe I am not less gutted. I'm just completely and utterly realistic.'
'I've coached the Brumbies to beat the British & Irish Lions,' White recalled of his time in Australia. 'The way you do that is you actually need the big sides to play badly.
'Dreamers are guys that think that you take youngsters and you just wave a wand and you beat international players.'

Prudence Sekgodiso fights hard and smart for third place in Stockholm

World indoor champion Prudence Sekgodiso fought hard and smart to finish third in a competitive 800m race at the Diamond League meet in Stockholm on Sunday in which Olympic champion Jemma Reekie of Britain finished behind her. Kenya's 2023 world champion Mary Moraa turned this into a tactical contest as she slowed down up front early on, letting the pacemaker go ahead, but Sekgodiso kept her head and when Reekie attacked at the end of the first lap, the 23-year-old went with her. Moraa pressed again on the back straight, but Sekgodiso pushed back to stay in touch with the leaders and when they came off the final bend it was a three-way race between the Pretoria runner, Moraa and Briton Georgia Hunter Bell, the Olympic 1,500m bronze medallist. Hunter Bell won in 1min 57.66sec with Moraa second in 1:57.83 and Sekgodiso third in 1:58.00. Audrey Werro of Switzerland was fourth in 1:58.35 and Reekie fifth in 1:58.66. Bradley Nkoana, a member of the South African 4x100m relay teams that won the 2024 Olympic silver and 2024 World Relays gold, finished second in the 100m in 10.23, five-hundredths of a second behind Benjamin Azamati of Ghana. Gift Leotlela, the South African champion over the distance, was disqualified for a false start. Abduraqhman Karriem had to overcome two recalls in the men's 200m, one for crowd noise and the other for a false start by Canadian Olympic gold medallist Aaron Brown. But when the race got under way after the third firing of the start gun, Karriem produced a great start, coming off the bend in contention, but then started tiring to finish fifth in 20.52, well short of his 20.15 personal best.

Bulls enforcer Cobus Wiese has a bright Springbok future under Rassie Erasmus

Cobus Wiese of The Bulls pictured during the United Rugby Championship 2024/25 Final against Leinster. | BackpagePix Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus believes Bulls bruiser Cobus Wiese has a big future at the Springboks because of his sheer bulk, skill, and ability to play in the second and back rows. The 28-year-old younger brother of No 8 Jasper ticks all the boxes for Erasmus and in the future could be a vital pillar in the Bok engine room. Wiese last year returned to South Africa after five years with the Sale Sharks and has been a significant part of a Bulls team that have been United Rugby Championship finalist for two years in a row. Erasmus called Wiese up to the Bok squad in 2018 but did not play him. Wiese, who was playing for the Stormers at that time, left for England in 2020. Erasmus says the respect Wiese enjoys from his teammates is telling. 'When a guy talks to Wilco Louw and asks how it feels when that guy (Cobus) scrums behind you, and you talk to the other props, and they all rate him highly, it means a lot,' the coach said of the strapping 1.97m, 117kg Wiese. 'He has that physical attribute that can generate momentum for his team and stop the opposition's momentum. Jake (White uses hi brilliantly at the Bulls and it stands out,' Erasmus said. 'He left for England young (he was 22). That made it hard to pick him. He's a big guy. Jake uses him to kick start momentum and stop it. We'd like him to do exactly what he does for Jake.' 'He can play four and seven,' added Erasmus, who loves versatile players. 'Also, he sometimes calls the lineout signals at the Bulls. That opens up our options quite a bit.' Erasmus said players who can switch between flank and lock are priceless. 'At the beginning of the season there are usually a lot of locks and then towards the end of it we are a bit thin on locks. Take out Eben (Etzebeth), Jean (Kleyn), Lood (de Jager), Salmaan (Moerat) and RG (Snyman), then you have players like Sous (Franco Mostert), Cobus, JL (Jean-Luc du Preez), and Vincent (Tshituka), who are all swingers, meaning they can play lock and flank.' 'This helps a lot if we want to play around with teams,' the coach said. 'If we maintain winning momentum, we would like to give players caps. Cobus falls into that versatile group of players. 'It opens up the options,' Erasmus explained, adding: 'Siya (Kolisi) can play at No8, Kwagga (Smith) can play No 6, Marco van Staden can play flank and No 8, and we have Jasper (Wiese) who can play at No.8. Erasmus has reduced his 55-man squad to 45 for the second week of the training camp under way in Johannesburg. The Bulls players invited to the camp will join their teammates on Tuesday.
