The Grade 1, $500,000 Jaipur will be run Sunday as the 12th race, and the Grade 1, $1 million Manhattan will be the 13th. The Sunday card was originally scheduled to have 11 races.
As a result of these changes, the New York Racing Association has refunded all wagers involving those races and canceled all the horizontal wagering (pick 4, pick 5, pick 6) after the sixth race today, a loss of millions of dollars. Imagn Images
Journalism, which won the Preakness Stakes and finished second in the Kentucky Derby, was listed as the early favorite to win the Belmont Stakes after the post-position draw was held Monday evening.
Journalism, which tops the field with 8-5 Morning Line odds to win the race, drew the No. 7 slot in the eight-horse field.
Kentucky Derby-winner Sovereignty is just behind Journalism with 2-1 odds and will start from the No. 2 position.

It's the third and final leg of horse racing's Triple Crown. This year's 'Run for the Carnations' has a $2 million purse. The race was held at Belmont Park for most of the last century. But Saratoga Race Course is hosting this year's installment — the 157th — after its first try in 2024. There is a rejuvenated energy at this new venue, with last year's attendance capped at 50,000. Sovereignty, the Kentucky Derby winner, skipped the Preakness but is back for the Belmont. The horse is slated at 2-1 odds. Journalism, the Preakness champ, is the clubhouse favorite at 8-5. The rain has also dampened the traditional "run for the tables" to snag a picnic table in Saratoga's capacious and ordinarily beautiful backyard. People line up for hours outside the gates before they open and then dash to their favorite spots to claim a table. On most big days, all the tables are gone within a few minutes of the gates opening. This morning, an hour after the gates opened at 9 a.m. ET, there were still tables available.
So when turf races are moved to the dirt (they are seldom canceled entirely), you have horses that run only or primarily or best on grass, and their trainers have to desire to run them on a sloppy dirt course. Often, the distance of the race is also changed, because of the different circumferences of the various courses.
Those scratches then lead to very small fields, which makes for terrible betting and low prices.
As of now, Race 9, the Grade 1, $500,000 Jaipur is still on the turf, as is Race 12, the Grade 1, $1 million Manhattan.
Race 6, the Grade 2, $300,000 Wonder Again and race 10, the Grade 3, $300,000 Pennine Ridge are off the turf.
The rain has been torrential since early this morning, and its effect on today's racing card is already profound. Four races, including two stakes have already been taken off the turf, and as of 11 a.m. ET, 38 horses have been scratched.
Why does this matter? What's a little rain, anyway?
Rain softens the grass courses, which can prove dangerous for horses and which can also destroy the courses when the loose soil is kicked up by the horses' hooves. Some horses also just don't like running on soft ground.
The weather is definitely the story. It's been pouring, everything is muddy, the grass races are off the turf. The Athletic

Commanders Speak Out On Improved Jayden Daniels

Commanders Speak Out On Improved Jayden Daniels originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels is coming off one of the greatest rookie performances in NFL history. … Capped by how he got Washington to the NFC Championship Game for the first time in 30 years. Advertisement Where, if anywhere, can Daniels improve coming off a year like that? That is the question his offensive coaching staff will have to answer. Offensive coordinator and play-caller Kliff Kingsbury will be tasked with devising a gameplan that works best with his young quarterback's skill set. … While also preparing his for adjustments made by the rest of the league. Wirh the work Daniels has done, it's clear that the Commanders are thrilled with what they have seen from the former second overall pick. "Just watching him move around, he's not thinking as much; he's playing fast and letting his natural gifts kind of take over — and that's what we want to see," Kingsbury said. "So, I expect him to take a big jump." Advertisement A big jump? That's a major statement. One of the first tests for Washington this season will be to try and win the NFC East. That will force their rivals like Philadelphia and Dallas to play road playoff contests if it got to that point. The only way that happens, though, is if Daniels continues to impress as a top quarterback in the league. According to his play-caller, it seems like that is something Daniels is poised to continue to do. Why Commanders' 'Nightmare' Scenario In 2025 Isn't Really Bad

Why Commanders' 'Nightmare' Scenario In 2025 Isn't Really Bad originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Washington Commanders' quarterback Jayden Daniels had a phenomenal rookie season, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, and leading his team to a 12-5 record and an NFC Championship appearance. Advertisement That is quite a lofty bar to reach in Year 2, but such was how the Commanders overall played, along with the coaching staff led by Dan Quinn, went about their business; more is expected in 2025. Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil were signed, and now the offense is loaded. So there are big expectations on Washington in Daniels' second year, but in what Bleacher Report calls a nightmare season, Jayden pulls a C.J. Stroud from 2024. "If Jayden Daniels pulls a C.J. Stroud from 2024," Bleacher Report writes. Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels© Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Right, let's go through this. Stroud, in his second season, won one more regular-season game, still made the playoffs as division winner, threw slightly fewer yards (4,108 to 3,727), had three fewer passing touchdowns (23 to 20), and seven more interceptions (five to 12). His passer rating dropped from 100.8 to 87.0, and QBR dropped from 57.5 to 49.8. Advertisement So yes, Stroud regressed a little, yet still won a playoff game and the division, but we know that success in the NFL isn't linear. Now, looking at Jayden. Last season, he threw for 3,568 yards, 25 touchdowns, nine interceptions, had a passer rating of 100.1, and a QBB of 70.6. That will be hard to replicate. The win total will likely decrease, but still winning 10 games is a commendable achievement. If his stats decline exactly like Stroud's, he will have 3,187 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions (which isn't ideal). He would have a passer rating of 86.3 and a QBR of 62.9. Stroud had more rushing yards in his second season (167 to 233) while Daniels, who posted 891 yards and six touchdowns, might see that come down a touch. Advertisement If Daniels does regress slightly as Stroud did, we aren't sure it would be the "nightmare" scenario some think it might be. After all, Jayden has set the bar so high that it will be tough to reach those heights consistently, and if he doesn't, we aren't sure if it is the end of the world. The Washington Commanders have one of the best offensive cores in the NFL.

The Washington Commanders have one of the best offensive cores in the NFL. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders surprised many people this past season, and it was due in no small part to the unexpected spark that their offense was able to provide the team. Advertisement In a recent article by SI, he ranks every NFL team's top offensive trio. He goes by the quarterback, the running back, and the team's best receiver, whether that be a wideout or a tight end. The Commanders might feel a bit disrespected, as thet have their 'triplets' outside of the top 10 at No. 12. "If the Commanders had a better run game, they would be very high on the list," the site wrote. "Washington saw Daniels become a revelation as a rookie, totaling 3,568 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, while running for another 891 yards and six scores. McLaurin is also one of the league's top receivers, catching 82 passes for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns, as the Commanders reached the NFC title game." Jayden Daniels, Brian Robinson Jr., and Terry McLaurin were the key players for the Commanders in 2024, and they all played their parts exactly like the team needed them to. Daniels had one of the best rookie seasons by a quarterback ever, as he became the sixth field general to make it to the conference championship in their first year. As for McLaurin, he had one of, if not the best season of his career with Daniels throwing him the ball. Advertisement Robinson might have been the weakest of the three players, but he still had just under 800 yards and eight touchdowns despite missing three games. So saying the team would be much higher on the list with a better run game is something that Robinson could take to heart. There Commanders are one of the teams in the league with the brightest futures, and their offensive core will be looking to help lead the team in 2025.
