Transport ministry approves UPs AI-based project to improve road safety

News1829-07-2025
Lucknow, Jul 29 (PTI) The Centre has approved an AI-based pilot project for the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department to reduce road accidents and improve enforcement efficiency, officials said on Tuesday.
The Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) on Monday issued a formal No Objection for the UP Transport Department's Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data Analytics based Road Safety Pilot Project.
This is the first AI-driven road safety experiment ever undertaken by a state transport department in India. The pilot project will be implemented at zero cost by the public sector enterprise ITI Limited in partnership with global technology firm mLogica, according to a statement issued by the Uttar Pradesh government.
The state government has already earmarked Rs 10 crore in its 2025-26 Budget to establish a 'data-driven administrative model" for the Transport Department, it noted.
Initial prototype of the model, scheduled for six weeks, will integrate multi-source data accident records, weather feeds, vehicle telematics, driver profiles and roadway attributes to build AI models that pinpoint root causes of accidents, forecast black spots and generate realtime policy dashboards.
Upon completion, the AI engine will be rolled out in a phased manner across all core functions of the Transport Department, including faceless licensing and permits, modernised enforcement, revenue collection, e-challan operations and the 'Vahan Sarathi' registries.
A comprehensive outcome report will be submitted to the MoRTH at the end of the pilot project, while legal compliance, data privacy and cybersecurity standards will be continuously audited, the statement added.
The ministry also asserted that the initiative must fully comply with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 and all road safety standard operating procedures (SOPs) and it will entail no financial liability for the MoRTH.
Building on the evidence generated during the testing phase, the AI will be embedded into other digital assets. The project will integrate the engine with the paperless licensing and permit mechanism, allowing systems to run on self-learning decision models, statement added.
Concurrently, the enforcement wing will deploy realtime fraud detection, vehicle positioning and predictive policing based on propensity to violate traffic laws, giving field officers data-backed alarms for on-the-spot action.
By fusing these data-sets, the department will gain a virtual dashboard covering income flows, infractions and credential status thus sharpening policy design, according to the statement.
Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh stated, 'This initiative will place Uttar Pradesh at the fore front of data-driven governance. By integrating the AI model beyond road safety into every core function of the department, we aim to make our state a national trail blazer in technological innovation." The ITI limited and mLogica team have been authorised to begin work immediately in coordination with the department, the statement noted. PTI KIS SHS SHS MNK MNK

Cable car project up for ministry's nod with feasibility report, proposed routes

Indore: Indore's dream of a cable car system could soon become a reality, with an estimated project cost of around Rs 737 crore. Indore Development Authority (IDA) has submitted a feasibility survey report to the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), which forwarded the proposal to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in Delhi for approval and budget allocation. The plan involves operating cable cars on two routes spanning a total of 11 km. The first Chandan Nagar to Shivaji Vatika is 6.24 km route with estimated cost of Rs 369.32 crore. Proposed stations on this route include Chandan Nagar, Labriya Bheru, Yashwant Niwas Road Gurudwara, Sarvate, and Shivaji Vatika. The second Railway Station to Vijay Nagar is 4.7 km route with an estimated cost of Rs 367.68 crore. Stations on this route are proposed at the Railway Station, Malwa Mill, Patnipura, and Vijay Nagar. The NHLML has initiated the process for budget allocation. Once the proposal is approved, the NHLML will proceed with appointing an agency and other necessary procedures for the public transport project. "NHLML has expertise in the development of ropeway projects, which is why the feasibility report was handed over to them. They will now implement the plan to establish this new mode of transport on the two routes in Indore," IDA CEO RP Ahirwar said. Ravindra Gupta, Indore manager, NHLML told TOI, "The feasibility survey report was submitted by the IDA. The proposal was sent to the ministry of Road Transport and Highways for approval and for the necessary funds to be provided. Amid property tax row, GMC extends 20% cut till September

Ghaziabad: In a bid to quell the ongoing dispute over property tax rates, Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has decided to extend the rebate period by two months. So, residents who make their payments till Sept 30 will get a 20% rebate on their tax, a significant extension from the original deadline of July 31. Sanjeev Sinha, the chief tax assessment officer at GMC, said, "With a view to include maximum consumers under the tax bracket, the corporation is offering a time-bound rebate on property tax. Since the start of the fiscal year — from April 1 — a 20% rebate was offered till July 31. However, we have extended this by two more months. Consumers can now avail themselves of a 20% rebate on property tax till Sept 30." Sinha elaborated on the future rebate structure too. "After Sept, the rebate will be slashed by 10%, which the consumers can avail themselves of for another two months — Oct and Nov. For Dec and Jan next year, the rebate will be 5%. After that, no discount will be offered. A consumer paying property tax after March 2026 will be levied with a fine. It is advisable that residents make good use of the offer because it is beneficial from the consumer's as well as GMC's point of view. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Malaysia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Undo It will boost the corporation's coffers." The state govt has set a target of Rs 600 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26. GMC hopes to collect at least 80% of this target. Despite the extension, confusion prevailed among residents regarding the tax rates. While officials asserted that property tax was being charged at rates before April 1, some residents claimed having received notices based on a new, higher tax slab. IN Jha, a resident of Sidharth Vihar, voiced his concerns. "We thought the GMC board repealed the hiked property tax proposal on June 30. But we are still receiving notices based on the new tax slab, which is at least four times higher than previous tax rates. There is confusion. So far, we have not got a satisfactory reply." Previously, property tax rates ranged from Rs 0.32/sqft for properties on roads less than 12 metres wide to Rs 2.41/sqft for wider roads. Revised rates now range from Rs 0.75/sqft to Rs 4/sqft. GMC calculates tax based on annual rental value (ARV) of a property. GMC's decision to hike property tax has led to protest among councillors. The GMC board recently approved a decision to repeal the hike order, and sent it to the state govt for a final call. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Ghaziabad plans a four-lane flyover to unclog Hapur Chungi junction

Ghaziabad: Hapur Chungi intersection, one of the city's major traffic bottlenecks, is set to get a four-lane flyover soon, district officials said. The move is aimed at decongesting the area, which sees heavy vehicular movement daily due to the convergence of multiple high-volume routes, including NH-9, NH-58, and the Alt Center, with no grade separation to streamline the traffic flow. The administration has directed the UP Bridge Corporation to submit a detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed project within two weeks. The flyover, proposed to be 800 metres long and four lanes wide, is expected to cost around Rs 98 crore. The move aims to ease traffic on one of the busiest road stretches in the city, where vehicles from NH-9 heading toward Shastrinagar, Meerut, Delhi, and Hapur district frequently get caught in snarls. It will also ease traffic moving from Delhi and Sahibabad via Mohan Nagar and Thakurdwara en route to Hapur. DM Ravindra Kumar Mandar said, "Once DPR is received, it will be sent to the state govt for approval, and the construction is expected to be completed within the next one year. The project cost will be borne by the state Public Works Department, which also holds the stretch of the road where this construction will happen." The DM said that apart from the flyover, the administration is also working on addressing local traffic congestion issues. During his inspection of the Collectorate area earlier this week, Mandar instructed officials to expand parking facilities in the complex, which often witnesses haphazard vehicle movement and overcrowding. "The goal is to bring visible improvements in the city's traffic management. We are looking at both short-term steps like better parking management and long-term infrastructure like new bridges to ensure smoother movement for residents," he added.
