Rob Ryan sees great potential in freshman linebacker Jadyn Walker

USA Today22-07-2025
Jadyn Walker is a former three-star recruit and the No. 16 player in Michigan as rated by ESPN. Walker has an opportunity to make a name for himself this season on the college football stage. Walker was a dual athlete in high school playing wide receiver and linebacker, putting up great production at both positions and earning many honors. Last season Walker didn't see the field for USC football until the Las Vegas Bowl versus Texas A&M.
The expectations are high for the redshirt freshman. Rob Ryan, a new member of the USC coaching staff, sees great potential in him. In a 247Sports USC feature, R.J. Abeytia breaks down the high expectations on Walker along with Rob Ryan's thoughts.
"The Jadyn Walker Fan Club is growing at an exponential rate inside and outside the McKay Center these days. No less a linebacker expert than new position coach Rob Ryan set the tone for an offseason in which expectations for the second-year freshman have skyrocketed.
"Jadyn Walker is going to be tremendous," Ryan said. "He's the one. He's the best right now at getting into the block and getting off 'em. He's so physical, and he loves it. He loves football. He works every day. He's in our offices every day. "This kid, 'meteoric rise.' Well, yeah, he's in there with the best coaches, so not surprising us, but this kid loves it. He's going to be fantastic. He's got a linebacker body. He runs and hits. He does everything well, and he's going to jump off the charts."
Ryan has played his role in developing Walker and setting him up to contribute this season.
Abeytia also provided Jadyn Walker's thoughts on learning from Rob Ryan:
"It's been great learning from him," Walker said. "He's really a players' coach. He's really good for us. We're blessed to have him. He's really funny in the film rooms. He makes everybody feel comfortable. He's amazing. It's great."
Jadyn Walker has all the tools to succeed at USC. One of the most important traits he has: being coachable. He could be a huge X-factor for the Trojans this season. Rob Ryan's words carry weight;he has an an eye for talent, having coached multiple Hall of Famers Charles Woodson and Warren Sapp, plus potential future HOF-ers such as Demarcus Ware.
Rob Ryan is the perfect guy to develop the next great linebacker in USC. Jadyn Walker is in fantastic hands. With Ryan by his side, he should live up to the high expectations set for him this season.

ESPN obtains RedZone, other media assets from NFL in blockbuster deal, per report

In one of the biggest media deals this century, ESPN and the National Football League agreed to a deal that will send popular entities such as RedZone over to the network, according to The Athletic. The deal, according to the report, could be worth billions and is expected to be formally announced next week. ESPN is gearing to start its direct-to-consumer service within weeks, which consumers are expected to pay nearly $30 a month, allowing buyers to cut cable subscriptions even further as people have more choices than ever in how they consume content featuring the nation's most popular and attended spectator sport. The network is expected to absorb the aforementioned RedZone, NFL Network, headquartered in Culver City, California, and to take on its slate of games this season as well as the league's popular fantasy football franchises. It is not expected that NFL Films is part of the deal, but the league is likely to take a 10% stake in the majority Disney-owned ESPN. The league is currently in an 11-year, $111 billion media rights deal with Amazon, CBS, ESPN, Fox, and NBC, which is set to expire in 2033. The deal still needs to be approved by government regulators, but is expected to be done in plenty of time for the network to gear up for its Super Bowl 61 coverage. The game is set for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The game is to be aired by ABC, another Disney-owned property.

Your NFL Sundays are about to change — ESPN is reportedly acquiring RedZone and NFL Network

The NFL is one of the most lucrative properties in the entertainment space, regularly garnering millions of views for a single game. In a deal reported by The New York Times, the Disney-owned sports network would relinquish equity potentially worth billions to the NFL in exchange for the NFL Network and RedZone (the channel that allows you to watch all live games simultaneously). And while the two properties are the meat of the deal, the side dishes are some pretty substantial content for ESPN to sink its teeth into. When all is said in done, NYT is reporting that ESPN will get NFL Network, RedZone, seven additional regular season game broadcasts (a fairly sizable number when you consider how short the NFL season is relative to other sports), the NFL's fantasy football business, special feature integration (like bettering) and possibly other assets. That's a huge chunk of the NFL's in-house content. However, it also shifts the workload of managing all that content to ESPN, allowing the NFL to focus on football. The NFL gets money. Well, not cash in this case, but equity in ESPN. According to a previous CNBC report, the NFL could get as much as 10% ownership of ESPN. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. With significant developments on the horizon for ESPN, including the reported launch of its standalone streaming service and app, this is an ideal time for a business entity like the NFL to take ownership of the largest sports broadcaster on the market. Big companies are exchanging billions of dollars. It happens all the time. What does it mean for you, the consumer who just wants to watch their favorite NFL teams every week? That's where things become a little murkier. We've heard that ESPN intends to launch its standalone streaming service and app for around $30 per month. Rumors have also said it'll launch over the next couple of weeks, which is conveniently before the start of the NFL regular season. If you're a cable holdout still paying for traditional cable services, you'll have access to the new ESPN App and all the goodies that come with it. That means nothing should change for you regardless of where the NFL Network and RedZone land. For everyone else, this deal might force football fans to join ESPN, as it could be the only way to watch several football games throughout the season and the beloved RedZone, which allows fans to watch all the games during those peak Sunday times. That is, of course, exactly why Disney is willing to part with up to 10% of its ESPN equity — your viewing attention (and $30 per month) is far more valuable to Disney. The big question is when this will happen. Will the deal be finalized and implemented before the start of this NFL season? Will it happen at some point during the season, potentially confusing fans, or will it have to wait until next season? We should find out in the coming weeks when Disney, ESPN and the NFL end the speculation.
