Basatne MENA, the regional arm of global circular economy leader Basatne, has partnered with Likewize, the global provider of device lifecycle services, to launch 'Upgrade & Protect' — an innovative subscription-based smartphone programme.
Upgrade & Protect introduces a flexible, monthly subscription model that allows users to upgrade, swap, or protect their smartphones at any time.
With more than 50 million active devices and smartphone replacement cycles averaging 12–18 months, the programme is designed to offer greater value and convenience to consumers while unlocking new recurring revenue streams for telecom operators.
Smartphone programme to reduce waste
'This partnership with Likewize marks a pivotal evolution in device ownership across the Middle East,' said Mahmoud Abusway, CCO of Basatne MENA. 'By embedding circular economy principles into the telco model, 'Upgrade & Protect' delivers a flexible, sustainable solution that reduces waste, maximises asset value, and transforms the device lifecycle for both consumers and operators.'
The launch is timely as GCC governments push toward net zero goals, digital sustainability, and green transformation.
The programme aligns with the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 Strategy and the GSMA's Circular Economy for Mobile Devices initiative, promoting a regenerative and tech-enabled consumption model.
The platform is supported by
Ardroid's AI-powered reverse logistics engine, and
Likewize's global telco operations expertise.
Together, they create a fully integrated circular ecosystem covering device collection, grading, refurbishment, resale, and recycling.
Likewize brings a turnkey solution for telcos, enabling risk-free operations with measurable returns — financial and environmental.
The scalable model is designed to help operators meet both business growth and ESG performance mandates.

Abu Dhabi: Employee who never joined work awarded Dh110,400 in unpaid wages
A company has been ordered to pay a man Dh110,400 in unpaid wages for four months and 18 days by an Abu Dhabi Labour Court (First Instance). The employee was hired but never allowed to begin work. The claimant had filed a lawsuit against the company, demanding payment of his delayed salary from November 11, 2024, to April 7, 2025. He claimed that he had signed a fixed-term contract with a basic salary of Dh7,200 and a total monthly package of Dh24,000. However, the company continuously delayed his start date, leaving him waiting without pay. A representative for the company appeared in court, submitted a legal response and documents, and requested the case be transferred to a relevant division for judgment. The court stated that 'it was clear from the wage report, the employment contract, and the supporting documents submitted through the case management system that the delay in starting work was due to the employer," according to local newspaper Emarat Al Youm. The court emphasised that under Federal Decree-Law No. (33) of 2021 regulating labour relations, employers are obligated to pay wages on time according to the systems approved by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. Citing Article 912 of the Civil Transactions Law, the court ruled that wages are a worker's right and cannot be withheld without proof such as a written waiver or legal acknowledgment. The employer had argued the employee wasn't entitled to his salary because he 'did not report to duty and went on leave.' But the court found no evidence of a formal investigation into any absence, determining that the delay in employment was the company's fault. The employee admitted taking eight days off, which were deducted from the total, resulting in a payment for four months and 18 days.

Dubai Chamber Reports AED 85.9 Billion in Q1 Exports as GCC Leads Trade Destinations
Dubai Chamber of Commerce members recorded AED 85.9 billion in exports and re-exports in the first quarter of 2025, marking a 16.8% year-over-year increase, with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) markets emerging as the top trade destination. According to the Chamber's latest data, GCC countries accounted for nearly half of total exports, with a combined value of AED 40.5 billion or 47.2% of the total. This reinforces the region's role as a cornerstone of Dubai's trade landscape. Middle Eastern markets outside the GCC secured the second-largest share, receiving AED 25 billion worth of goods, representing 29.1% of the total. Africa followed with AED 9.1 billion in exports and re-exports, accounting for 10.6%. The Asia-Pacific region contributed AED 8 billion, or 9.4% of the total, while Europe received AED 2.4 billion, making up 2.8%. North American and Latin American markets saw lower volumes, with AED 460 million (0.5%) and AED 315 million (0.4%) respectively. The strong first-quarter performance highlights Dubai's expanding trade reach and the Chamber's role in supporting members across key global markets. The GCC's continued dominance underscores the strategic importance of regional ties, even as Dubai businesses steadily grow their global footprint. News Source: Dubai Media Office
