Stars, local filmmakers share Miami Film Festival spotlight

Axios31-03-2025
You can hear from Hollywood stars, support local filmmakers and watch world premieres at the Miami Film Festival, which returns this week.
Why it matters: This year's festival comes as local leaders hope to revive Miami-Dade County's once-powerful position in the movie industry, which has diminished since Florida ended its film incentive program in 2016.
A $50 million county film incentive program, which launched last year, is helping "put Miami back on the production map," Variety says.
Driving the news: Miami Dade College's long-running celebration of cinema features roughly 200 films from over 45 countries and conversations with "Before Sunrise" star Julie Delpy, "White Lotus" actor Jason Isaacs and more.
The festival, which runs from April 3-13, will show 35 world premieres and new work from Miami-based filmmakers.
Here's a sampling of screenings and events to check out.
Opening film – " Meet the Barbarians:" Delpy's French comedic drama follows the story of a small town that accepts Ukrainian refugees in exchange for government subsidies and the conflict that unfolds when Syrian migrants arrive instead.
Thursday, April 3. 7pm at the Olympia Theater.
The screening will be preceded by the presentation of the festival's Impact Award to Delpy, who directs and stars in the movie.
Tickets $37.
Sex, Love and Violence (Comedy Shorts Block): A series of short comedies from around the world.
Friday, April 4. 6:30pm. Silverspot Cinema, Room 12.
$18.
" Before Sunrise" – 30th Anniversary Screening: Delpy, who stars in the 1995 film with Ethan Hawke, will give an extended introduction before the screening.
Friday, April 4. 9:30pm. Regal South Beach.
$28.
" Know Me – The Untold Miami Bath Salts Phenomenon:" The 2025 film attempts to shed light on the grisly 2012 attack of a local unhoused man by Rudy Eugene, whom the media dubbed the "Miami Zombie."
Miami director and actor Edson Jean developed and co-wrote the film with Markenson Charles, Eugene's younger brother, who was killed by police after the attack.
Despite speculation that Eugene had ingested the street drug known as "bath salts," a medical examiner found only marijuana in his system.
Monday, April 7 at 7:30pm at the Little Haiti Cultural Center and Friday, April 11 at 9pm at Silverspot Cinema, Room 12.
$18.
" The Python Hunt:" South Florida filmmaker Xander Robins documents Florida's annual python removal contest in the Everglades.
Wednesday, April 9 at 9pm, Koubek Theater. Saturday, April 12 at 2:30pm at the Bill Cosford Cinema.
$18.
Saturday, April 12, 1pm. MDC Wolfson, Chapman Center.
$23.

James Gunn Says He's Shooting the ‘Superman' Sequel ‘Much Sooner Rather Than Later': ‘We're Scheduling it Now'

James Gunn is giving an update on his 'Superman' sequel. During a recent interview with Collider, Gunn said he has completed the treatment for his 'Superman' follow-up and that he and his team are currently scheduling production. More from Variety James Gunn Posts His Emotional On-Set Debate With David Corenswet Over Superman's Big Speech: I Was 'Freaked Out (and So Happy)' It Was Filmed Missed It in Theaters? You Can Now Watch 'Superman' Online James Gunn Says 'Superman' Is Getting Digital Release So Quickly Because of 'Peacemaker' Season 2; Blockbuster Hits PVOD After Just Over a Month in Theaters 'We're scheduling it now,' Gunn said. 'I'm totally done with the treatment. My treatments are incredibly intense. They're not regular treatments. They're 60-page treatments with dialogue and everything. And so, now I'm just turning that into a script. We're planning out when we're going to shoot that. It's going to be much sooner rather than later.' Gunn recently revealed across various interviews during his 'Superman' press tour that he is writing a new film featuring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, although he remained vague whether it was a standalone sequel or an entirely new project. Other upcoming projects on the DC slate include 'Peacemaker' Season 2, 'Supergirl,' the 'Lanterns' TV series, 'Wonder Woman' and 'Clayface.' Gunn said during a recent interview with CBS Mornings that all projects under the DC umbrella will have their own unique tone and style, much like the comics they are based on. ''Clayface' is a totally different thing. Although it's in the same universe, it's a complete horror film, and that's one of the things we want to do,' Gunn explained. 'There's not a company style. It's not like every movie is gonna be like 'Superman.' The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it. … We don't want people being bored.' Sydney Sweeney Parties Hard In Blue Jeans During Boozy Night Out As She Ignores AE Ad Backlash

Sydney Sweeney recently shared photos of herself and some friends partying in Florida, while rocking blue jeans. The "Euphoria" star recently came under fire after she featured in a commercial for denim brand American Eagle, which some critics slammed as racist. Many had demanded that she release a statement or an apology, but Sydney Sweeney has ignored her critics as she returned to Instagram to promote her film "Americana." Sydney Sweeney's Boozy Night Out With Pals Sweeney flaunted her love for denim as she enjoyed a boozy night out with some pals. The "White Lotus" actress took to her Instagram account to share photos from the fun experience, and she can be seen rocking a blue denim with a white cotton crop top that flashed her toned midriff, and white sneakers. The event seemingly took place at a crowded location, as fellow partygoers were spotted scattered around in the background. Sweeney held up a tray of shots to hand out to friends in one photo. She kept her blonde hair down and is also seen holding up a microphone with a girl pal on a stage for some karaoke. "Duval diaries," she captioned the photos. The Actress's AE Controversy Surrounding The Actress Sweeney's time out with friends comes some weeks after she faced backlash for her American Eagle "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans" commercial. In the ad, the 27-year-old actress made a "jeans/genes" pun, but critics argued that it supported eugenics and white supremacist rhetoric. A Salon report noted that the term "great genes" is "historically used to celebrate whiteness, thinness and attractiveness," seemingly making the commercial "a tone-deaf marketing move." Amid the backlash from several online, Sweeney has remained silence, seemingly opting to let the issue die down. The Brand Has Responded To The Sydney Sweeney Backlash Unlike Sweeney, American has since released a statement insisting that the "'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans." "Her jeans. Her story," they added. "We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone." After posting the ad on her Instagram last month, she seemingly went on a hiatus from posting amid the backlash. However, she returned 3 days ago and shared a series of pictures promoting her new film "Americana." "A few years ago, I filmed this little movie with some friends, and now you get to meet Penny Jo," she wrote in the caption. The Actress's Silence On The Ad Controversy May Be A Bad Idea In The Long Run, PR Expert Claims Although a poll showed that only 12% of Americans see the ad as controversial, crisis PR expert Eric Schiffer believes the situation bears some risk if the movie star continues to go silent about it. "Sydney's mute button is a toxic time‑bomb with some people on the left – every hour of hush hurls her wholesome brand deeper into racial quicksand," he told the Daily Mail. The CEO of Reputation Management Consultants warned that failing to speak out "will be seen as a brutal insult to many shoppers on the left." "Sydney's no‑comment stance will scream ruthless privilege to those offended, and critics feast on the void like vultures on a desert carcass," Schiffer continued. He, however, acknowledged how some conservatives may resonate well with her silence. "For conservatives, Sydney refusing to grovel denies the mob its delicious public‑shaming ritual and would be seen as a brutal power move," he said. "Because for conservatives, silence isn't weakness, it's an ironclad shield against manipulative narrative‑hijackers." Sydney Sweeney Remains Single After Split From Her Ex-Fiancé Sweeney became single again after her relationship with her fiancé, Jonathan Davino, came to an end. The pair first sparked romance rumors in 2018 before blossoming into a full relationship and even later getting engaged. However, the actress raised eyebrows earlier this year when she deleted a photo of them kissing on New Year's Eve. According to People Magazine, an insider claimed that the break-up happened after Sweeney came to realize she wasn't prepared to get married and "didn't feel right" about her connection with Davino. "She's exactly where she wants to be. Most people would feel overwhelmed by her working schedule this year, but not Syd. She's all about working right now and very excited about all her projects," the source said. "What did make her overwhelmed, though, was her relationship and her wedding. She didn't feel right about it," the insider continued. The source added that Sweeney "is not ready to settle down" and that her relationship with Davino "only lasted for this long because it was hard for her to break it off." Solve the daily Crossword

PETA Urges Nintendo to Remove ‘Mario Kart World' Cow's Nose Ring: ‘It's-a Mean!'

Animal-rights advocacy group PETA wants Nintendo to remove the brass nose ring from Cow, the joyful anthropomorphic vehicle-driving character in the recently released top-selling game 'Mario Kart World.' Yes, really. PETA this week launched a campaign to urge the Japanese game maker to redesign the Cow character 'without the nose ring — a painful reminder of the cruelty cows endure in the meat and dairy industries.' More from Variety Nintendo's Switch 2 Sales Near 6 Million 'Legend of Zelda' Live-Action Movie Casts Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Zelda and Link With the Release of the Nintendo Switch 2, the Nintendo Switch 1 OLED Is on Sale Online 'The brass ring in Cow's nose glosses over real-world violence and cruelty to animals. That's why we're asking you to give this beloved bovine a small but meaningful upgrade: Remove the nose ring and let Cow race freely — without any painful reminders of the industries that treat animals like profit-making machines,' Joel Bartlett, PETA's SVP of marketing engagement, wrote in a letter addressed to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, which the group posted on its website. He added, 'leave the rings to Sonic and let Cow breathe free!' Reps for Nintendo of America did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 'Mario Kart World' was released June 5, 2025, as a launch game for the Nintendo Switch 2. As of June 30, the company had sold 5.63 million copies, according to Nintendo, making it the best-selling title for the new console. In the game, 24 players compete against each other to see who can zoom through open-world racetracks the fastest. Online commenters have pointed out that it's possible — in the context of the 'Mario Kart World' universe — that Cow chose to get the nose ring herself. 'How do they know the cow didn't go to a body piercing place to get it? The damn thing knows how to drive so it's not completely… ordinary,' an X user posted Friday about the issue. According to PETA, in a press release about Cow's nose ring that said 'It's-a mean!', the cattle industry uses nose rings as a tool of torment, not a fashion accessory: 'Nose rings are used by the meat and dairy industries to exploit, control and even drag animals to their deaths. These brass rings are crudely stabbed through the sensitive septum of cows and bulls, which can cause lasting pain and discomfort.' It's not the first time PETA has targeted Nintendo. For example, the advocacy group in 2020 criticized the game giant's 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons' for 'encouraging abusive behavior toward fish and insects, where players can tear wildlife out of their homes and display them in cramped cases in a museum.' And in 2017, PETA said Nintendo had 'sold its soul' by partnering with McDonald's to include 'Super Mario' toys in Happy Meals. 'Nintendo should stay in the business of selling creative video games, not cruel and unhealthy chicken nuggets,' the group said at the time.
