OLED specialist wins Merck Award for display innovation
The Merck Award, established by the International Meeting on Information Display, recognizes outstanding scientific achievements in the field of display technology.
Cho was honored for his pioneering work in developing OLED microdisplay processing technology, which has since been transferred to domestic panel makers. His contribution has laid the groundwork for next-generation displays used in virtual and augmented reality devices.
'I will do my best to continue research and development in OLED technologies and to support collaboration among academia, industry and research institutes, thereby contributing to the advancement of Korea's display industry,' he said in his acceptance speech.
This year's Merck Young Scientist Award went to Kim Sang-hyeon, an associate professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, for his fundamental research on micro-LED display technology.
The announcement was made during this year's IMID, held from Tuesday to Friday at Bexco in Busan. At the event, Johannes Canisius, head of OLED business at Merck, delivered a keynote speech.
'Merck has been investing in display technology development for more than 120 years, which is one-third of its 357-year history, and is recognized by its customers and the industry for its rich expertise in next-generation display technology development and AR/VR fields,' said Kim Woo-kyu, managing director of Merck Korea.
'Merck will lead new business opportunities in extended reality, optical coatings and optical-on-chip technologies, accelerate customer innovation and provide customized solutions across the entire industry.'

Korea's ODA-to-GNI ratio to 0.5% is crucial, calls it a 'reflection of national values' Bill Gates, chair of the Gates Foundation, called on Seoul to increase its foreign aid and redirect more of it to global health, recommending that Seoul allocate 15 percent of its aid portfolio to multilateral initiatives such as the vaccine alliance Gavi. Gates, co-founder of Microsoft Corp., called for increased spending on official development assistance after meeting President Lee Jae Myung and Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on Thursday during his two-day visit to Seoul, which began Wednesday. 'We've challenged the government a little bit to go back and look at their ODA spending. ODA spending is a bit less than 0.3 percent of GDP, and hopefully that will grow over time,' Gates said Thursday afternoon during his press briefing in Seoul with local media. Gates stressed that global health multilaterals are by far the most effective form of ODA given their efficiency and accountability. 'In our proposal, as this government makes a new ODA strategy, the health multilaterals could grow to be as much as 15 percent of that and draw South Korea into a much stronger role in terms of governance and contributions,' he said. In July, President Lee ordered a sweeping review of South Korea's ODA programs, questioning whether all aid projects that consume billions of won each year serve diplomatic purposes and enhance national prestige. Gates said South Korea's ODA remains too focused on the bilateral level, while most of the other donor countries channel a larger share of their aid through multilateral institutions such as Gavi and the Global Fund. 'Korea is a bit of an outlier in the current approach, but this new government can take a fresh look at that,' Gates said. Gates also underscored that raising the ratio of South Korea's ODA to its gross national income to the 0.5 percent level is critical. He noted that the aspiration level for wealthy countries is 0.7 percent — a benchmark only a few have surpassed, while Europe as a whole stands at around 0.4 percent. 'In terms of getting to the 0.7 percent, that's not a near-term aspiration. But you're a little bit below 0.3 percent. So ideally, there'd be a concrete plan to get towards 0.5 percent over the next five years.' Gates stressed that South Korea should regard development assistance not just as a financial burden but as a reflection of national values, noting that Korea itself once benefited from international aid. 'Well, certainly, 99 percent of the money, or maybe someday 98 percent, should be spent on those things. I don't think you can solve those problems with the 1 or 2 percent that has to do with,' Gates responded to questions about the legitimacy of spending Korean taxpayers' money on foreign aid at a time when South Korea faces pressing domestic challenges. Referring to South Korea's past as an aid recipient, Gates added, 'When aid was brought here to Korea, was that valuable? It saved a lot of Korean lives at that time." "And now, it's up to the voters to decide.' When asked whether he has an interest in aiding North Korea, Gates said, 'North Korea is low-income enough that, if they choose, they can work with these health agencies on things like vaccines.' Before the news briefing, Gates met with President Lee to discuss global health security, highlighting South Korea's technological and manufacturing capabilities in the biotechnology sector. 'Unfortunately, in aid, the weakest programs are often the ones that get into the newspaper, which can tarnish the overall effort because people won't focus on how miraculous the really strong work is,' Gates said. KHNP, Westinghouse may create joint venture to target global nuclear power market: sources
The state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. and US energy firm Westinghouse Co. have held talks on creating a joint venture to jointly target the recovering nuclear power plant market in the United States and Europe, sources said Thursday. The possibility was discussed as part of efforts to boost cooperation between South Korea and the United States in the nuclear power plant sector, according to the sources familiar with the matter, who noted energy officials from the two countries have held a number of meetings to that end since US President Donald Trump took office. Trump has vowed to expand his country's nuclear energy capacity from the current 100 gigawatts to 400 GW by 2050, which will be equivalent to building some 300 new nuclear reactors. To this end, the US president has signed executive orders that shortened to 18 months the time needed to evaluate and approve new construction and operation licenses. In the recent meetings with South Korea, US officials are said to have asked Korean companies to play an active role in Washington's plan to reinvigorate its nuclear energy industry. US energy officials have also told their Korean counterparts that with the settlement of an intellectual property dispute between the KHNP and Westinghouse, conditions for bilateral nuclear energy cooperation have been established, the sources said. The KHNP and Westinghouse signed the settlement deal in January after the latter accused the Korean firm of infringing on its IP, claiming the KHNP's APR 1000 and APR 1400 plant designs utilize its licensed technology. The deal removed a major hurdle for a KHNP-led Korean consortium to sign a final contract with the Czech Republic in June to build two nuclear reactors in the European country for an estimated 26 trillion won ($18.7 billion). The details of the settlement deal remain undisclosed, but according to industry sources, the bilateral agreement prohibits the KHNP from bidding for new power plant projects in North America and the European Union, except for the Czech Republic. But if the KHNP forms a JV with Westinghouse, the Korean company will be able to take part in projects in the regions as the US company's partner. Market watchers say Westinghouse needs a business partner that has capabilities in construction, equipment procurement and operation, noting the U.S. firm currently remains what they called a "fabless" company that only has original design technology with no construction capabilities. Across the world, South Korea and France are the only countries that have comprehensive nuclear power plant construction capabilities other than Russia and China, they said. The US is still a powerhouse in original technologies for building nuclear power plants but has fallen behind in terms of actual construction capabilities as the country has rarely built a new reactor since 1979, when it experienced a nuclear meltdown accident at a facility on Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania. Earlier this week, KHNP CEO Whang Joo-ho said during a parliamentary committee meeting that his company reached a conclusion that it should focus on targeting the US market rather than the European market, remarks that appeared to be referring to the KHNP's push to enter the American market as Westinghouse's partner. Whang plans to visit the US from Saturday to Wednesday to meet with officials from Westinghouse and two other American energy firms, according to industry officials. "It is true that the KHNP and Westinghouse have been discussing forming a JV for some time," an official said on the condition of anonymity. "But it is uncertain if the two companies will reach an agreement during Whang's upcoming visit to the US." In an apparently related move, Korea Electric Power Corp. CEO Kim Dong-cheol was set to head for the US later Thursday to meet with officials from Westinghouse and American electric power companies, according to company officials. (Yonhap)

Cosmax steps into India to accelerate global growth
Cosmax, a leading Korean original design manufacturer, announced plans to establish a local subsidiary in Mumbai by the end of the year, accelerating its push into the Indian cosmetics market. According to industry sources Thursday, Chairman Lee Kyung-soo emphasized a 'premium strategy' and reaffirmed the company's commitment to top-tier R&D and expanded global partnerships. 'We want using Korean cosmetics to be a source of pride,' Lee said during an IR session held Wednesday in Seoul. Cosmax currently operates production and sales hubs in over 10 countries, including the US, China, Indonesia and Thailand. Following the India launch, the company is also considering entering the Middle East. While the Indian subsidiary is in its final planning stages, the company clarified that there are no immediate plans for a local manufacturing plant. According to the Korea Cosmetic Industry Institute, India's cosmetics market was valued at $31.7 billion in 2024, growing at an average annual rate of 4.7 percent since 2022. Cosmax posted 2.17 trillion won ($1.54 billion) in sales last year, outperforming global competitors like Intercos and Kolmar. The company aims to leverage its production capacity — over 3.3 billion units annually — and partnerships with global beauty brands like L'Oreal and Estee Lauder to solidify its premium positioning.
