Will honour SC order, says Karnataka Deputy CM Shivakumar on screening of 'Thug Life'
BENGALURU: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday appealed to Kannada activists to abide by the Supreme Court order, which directed the state government to ensure the screening of the Kamal Haasan-starrer movie 'Thug Life'.
Kannada activists have been up in arms against the screening of the movie after the 70-year-old actor's comments about Kannada language sparked a major controversy.
They staged protests, lodged police complaint and warned film theatres not to screen the movie, alleging that Haasan insulted Kannada without knowing its rich history.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday came down heavily on the Karnataka government after 'Thug Life' was not screened in theatres in the state.
The court said mob and vigilantes cannot be allowed to take over streets.
Reacting to the court order, Shivakumar said, "We have to abide by the Supreme Court order with honour. Everyone has limitations. I appeal to various organisations that we must have our limitations."
"I appeal to all the Kannada activists, please be calm, we should respect the court. No one should take law into their hands," he said.
The Deputy CM underlined that Karnataka has always been a peace loving state. Noting that there is nothing wrong in expressing opinion, Shivakumar said the state government too gave activists a chance to express their views.

Mysuru: BJP functionaries staged a protest at Gandhi Square on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar over the tragic stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, which claimed the lives of 11 Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans and left over 50 others injured. "This tragedy is a result of complete administrative failure. The chief minister, deputy chief minister, and home minister G Parameshwara must take moral responsibility and resign immediately," he demanded.

BBMP to provide funds to Forest dept if it develops parks on its lands: Dy CM DK Shivakumar
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 17 (ANI): Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday said that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) would provide funds to the Forest Department if it comes forward to develop forest land in Bengaluru on the lines of Cubbon Park and Lalbagh. Speaking at the World Environment Day event at the Palace Grounds, he said, 'If the Forest Department develops its land parcels as parks on the lines of Cubbon Park and Lalbagh, it would benefit the public and save forest lands from encroachment.' 'We all need to realise that land doesn't belong to us, but we belong to Earth. We can't exploit Mother Earth, ignoring the future. The government is committed to protecting our land, water and nature. We must realise that we are there only when Earth is there,' he said. 'All of us have to take an oath to plant at least one tree in our lifetime. When I became the Bengaluru Development Minister, I introduced a scheme in which every student adopts a plant. As many as 50,000 plants were planted as part of this scheme, and the students are nurturing them,' he said. 'We have instructed schools to form a 'climate action club' comprising 25 students in each school. We need to think about our planet as pollution is increasing rapidly,' he added. Apart from this, Shivakumar also launched a sharp critique against the BJP, accusing them of using the recent Chinnaswamy stadium stampede for political mileage. Shivakumar alleged that the BJP has a pattern of exploiting tragedies. 'They are specialists in doing politics over dead bodies. They have been doing this brand of politics for a long time,' he said. Responding to a reporter's question about BJP protests demanding accountability from the Chief Minister and himself, he said, 'Do we need to carry the BJP on our shoulders for taking a high ground and criticising the government on the stampede? Who is responsible for the stampedes in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and many railway stations across the country? More than hundred people died in a stampede at a UP temple alone. I went to visit plane crash site in Ahmedabad, did I say a word about the Union government?' Pointing out that the Karnataka government has already acted, he said, 'The government has already taken action against many people in this regard. We have also formed a one-man commission to conduct investigation.' He further claimed that Congress has never politicised similar incidents elsewhere. (ANI)

Mizoram Cong MLA granted bail in corruption case
1 2 3 Aizawl: Special Court (Prevention of Corruption Act) in Aizawl has granted bail to C Ngunlianchunga, the lone Congress legislator in the 40-member Mizoram state legislative assembly, who was recently charge-sheeted in a graft case, court sources said on Tuesday. Ngunlianchunga's counsel, Lalfakawma, argued that the investigation had already been completed, and the charge sheet submitted before the court. "The applicant is a permanent resident of Mizoram and poses no risk of absconding. As an elected MLA, his arrest at this stage would bring disrepute, particularly given that the trial is still in its initial phase," he submitted. He further informed the court that Ngunlianchunga is undergoing treatment for rectal cancer. After hearing the arguments, special judge F Rohlupuia granted bail with a bond of Rs 2 lakh and a reliable surety. "Upon careful perusal of the case record and guidelines set by the Supreme Court in Satender Kumar Antil vs. CBI (2021) 10 SCC 773, granting bail is deemed appropriate," the judge ruled. He stipulated that the accused must attend court regularly, failing which the bail may be revoked. The court has scheduled July 22 as the date for Ngunlianchunga's next appearance. The case stems from a complaint submitted to the state Lokayukta alleging misappropriation of funds meant for constructing the Lawngtlai town bypass road in South Mizoram's Lawngtlai district, bordering Myanmar. The funds were received under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources from the ministry of development of north eastern region (DoNER) in 2013, when Ngunlianchunga was the chief executive member of LADC. The lokayukta authorised the state anti-corruption bureau to investigate, leading the agency to register the case in 2022.
