Opposition in Maharashtra demands to make film ‘Phule' tax-free and screen in schools
Opposition in Maharashtra has urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to exempt the film Phulefrom tax and make it available in schools. They argued that making the film tax-free would allow more people to know the history of India's social reforms and movements.
While NCP-SP leader Jayant Patil asked to make it tax-free, aiming to reach more people with the history of social reforms, Mumbai Congress president and MP Varsha Gaikwad wants school students to understand the struggle of such social reformers that enabled girls to pursue education in India.
Actor and filmmaker Ananth Mahadevan directed the film Phule, a biopic on the lives of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, released on April 25. The film has already attracted criticism from the Brahmin community for allegedly showing the community in a bad light. The director has defended that the film is not against the Brahmins, and the controversy around it was 'unnecessary'.
Mr. Patil on Friday asked Mr. Fadnavis to tax-free the film Phule that depicts the struggles of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule for equality and see the living history of the movement built for the upliftment of society. He shared the letter on X, mentioning, 'The work of Mahatma Phule and Savitrimai is beyond opening water tanks for Dalits and promoting women's education. The film has been opposed in the 21st century as much as the couple faced opposition for their work in the 19th century, resulting deletion of nearly 12 scenes from the film.'
'Everyone must watch the struggle of the couple fighting to give a man the right to live as a human being,' he wrote, adding that people's misconceptions will also be cleared.
Mumbai Congress president and MP Varsha Gaikwad demanded that the film be made tax-free in Maharashtra and screened in schools, especially girls' schools across the State. Crediting the Phule couple for all her achievements, Ms. Gaikwad said, 'Many women like me can get themselves educated and work in the political field just because of Phule's initiatives to educate women and the underprivileged sections of society.' 'We have a social responsibility towards them; the current generation should understand their struggle. This is possible through this film,' she wrote in the letter to Mr. Fadnavis.
Meanwhile, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) Chief Prakash Ambedkar also raised his voice to make the film tax-free. 'I demand that the film be released without any cuts and be made tax-free in Maharashtra. VBA follows the Phule-Shahu-Ambedkarwadi ideology, and we will NOT tolerate and stay quiet to this insult of Mahatma Phule,' he posted on X, a few weeks ago.

'While I was abroad as a part of the delegation, the Congress contacted me. I said I cannot join them as I am away and told them to wait till all the delegations return. I told them, let's have a meeting and decide after I return, but it happened before I returned. That is why I could not sign the letter to the Prime Minister,' Sule told The Indian Express. Sule's remarks come close on the heels of 16 Opposition parties writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a special session, saying 'there are serious questions facing the nation about the terror attack, killing of civilians in Poonch, Uri and Rajouri, the ceasefire announcements, and the implications on our national security and foreign policy'. The NCP(SP) was not a signatory. They also come amid the rising 'closeness' between NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar and his estranged nephew and NCP chief Ajit Pawar. In the recent past, the two leaders have been seen sharing the stage at multiple events. Earlier, the senior Pawar, who has served as the Union Defence Minister, had categorically said that his party would not demand a special session of Parliament over Operation Sindoor as 'some things were not meant to be discussed in public'. On the other hand, Sule said the country comes first and India must send a message to the world that we are united against any terror attack. 'Pawar sahab had made it very clear. We were expecting that when the July session comes, hopefully everything will be settled by then, then we can definitely debate it. Because in a vibrant democracy, every issue must be debated, but there has to be a right time for it.' Sule said her party would 'definitely ask' the government questions during the Monsoon session. 'Of course, I think India will ask questions, not just the NCP (SP). India will ask questions. India wants to know a lot of answers. It is not just about the NCP (SP), India wants to know.' NCP members' involvement in crimes will be discussed at anniversary event, says Sunil Tatkare
Pune: The dissolution of NCP's entire Beed district unit, the resignation of former Pune city unit chief Deepak Mankar, and the expulsion of Rajendra Hagawane, who was arrested in connection with his daughter-in-law's death, will be on the agenda for discussions when deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar-led party celebrates its 26th anniversary in Pune on June 10. Confirming this, state NCP president Sunil Tatkare on Friday said it is quite unfortunate that some office bearers were found to be involved in criminal activities, and police cases were also registered against them. "We have acted against such members but I feel that a person involved in crimes should not be associated with the party." After the split in 2023, both factions have been organising separate conventions to mark anniversaries in Pune since last year. This time, Ajit Pawar 's camp will hold its event at Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, while NCP(SP) headed by Sharad Pawar has chosen Balgandharva Auditorium for its convention's venue. Tatkare said senior leadership has taken cognisance of all criminal cases involving party functionaries, and on June 10, they will reflect on them. "All members will be told not to indulge in any criminal activity, or they will face action even within the party." Amidst speculations of a possible merger of both factions, Tatkare said, "I am categorically saying that we have not received any such proposal. We have a core group within NCP which makes all the important decisions, and there has been no discussion on this topic." He further said his party is not deviating from its stand of being within NDA. "The discussion of joining NDA had been going on since 2014, and finally, the party collectively took a call to be part of the alliance under the leadership of Ajit Pawar. Now, those who support our stand and want to join us, we will welcome them." Earlier this year, NCP had to disband its Beed district unit after it came to light that some of the officer bearers were named in the FIR registered in connection with the Massajog sarpanch murder case. Mankar recently resigned from his post after a case of forgery was registered against him in Pune. The top brass expelled Hagawane from the party after he was named in the FIR related to the death of his daughter-in-law Vaishnavi. Later he was arrested.
