Civic bodies are only following the meat ban imposed by Congress in 1988: CM
MUMBAI: Amid a backlash by Opposition leaders, as well as deputy chief minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar, over the ban on selling meat on Independence Day imposed by several municipal corporations in the state, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday that the 'directives issued by civic bodies was based on a similar order issued by the Congress government in 1988'. Nagpur: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis congratulates chess player Divya Deshmukh on winning the FIDE Women's World Cup 2025, during a press conference, in Nagpur, Monday, July 28, 2025. (PTI Photo)(PTI07_28_2025_000493A) (PTI) On Tuesday, while Pawar opposed the ban, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had released a copy of a government resolution (GR) of 1988, which was issued when Sharad Pawar (who was with Congress at the time) was chief minister of the state. On Wednesday, Fadnavis said while BJP supports citizens' freedom of choice in food, the 'ban is not the state government's decision, but has come from the municipal corporations of some cities'. 'The civic bodies have appraised me that the ban has been in practice for years, with the first GR being issued in 1988. Everybody has the right to live life as per the constitutional provision and the government does not want to interfere with it,' said Fadnavis. BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye posted the GR on X, stating: 'Aaditya Thackeray (Shiv Sena-UBT) and Jitendra Awhad (NCP-SP), who have been opposing the ban, should condemn Sharad Pawar (head of NCP-SP). Awhad and Thackeray were ministers in the Uddhav Thackeray government, which continued the ban, but uttered no word against it. I however have no doubt that deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, known for his command of the administration, would very well know that this decision is not by the Mahayuti government.' The row over meat ban erupted after the Kalyan Dombivili Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Thane district directed the closure of meat shops on August 15, which was followed by civic bodies of Malegaon, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Nagpur.

BJP Slams Sharad Pawar's Party MLA For Anti-Sanatana Remarks
New Delhi: BJP national spokesperson and MP Sambit Patra on Sunday hit out at the Congress "ecosystem" for what he called its determination to defame Sanatan Dharma and use terms like "Hindu terror", citing the latest controversial statement by leader NCP-SP MLA Jitendra Awhad. Addressing mediapersons, Patra said, "Awhad is a leader from Maharashtra and belongs to Sharad Pawar's party. Once again, he has used derogatory language for Sanatan Dharma. Awhad said that Sanatan Dharma has destroyed India and that there was never a religion called Sanatan Dharma." Criticising the MLA, Patra said, "You have insulted the truth, spoken against Shiva, and opposed the beauty of India - an India whose beauty lies in its respect for all. Today, I want to ask respected Sharad Pawar Ji and his daughter Supriya Sule, who is also a Member of Parliament, if this is the official line of your party, or is this just Jitendra Awhad's personal opinion." The BJP MP blamed the Congress "ecosystem" for the latest "disrespect" of Sanatan Dharma. "The objective of appeasement drives the entire Congress ecosystem to make such controversial remarks time and again," he said. They want to insult Sanatan Dharma, eradicate and oppose Sanatan Dharma and want to deliberately use the term "Hindu terrorist" and "Saffron terrorist", he said. The BJP MP also trained his guns on Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan for using the terms "Hindu terrorist or Sanatan terrorist". "Nowhere else in the world is the majority community assailed like this and taunted as intolerant," he said. Patra said it is the greatness of Sanatan Dharma that its followers are voicing their protest against such provocative remarks through a press conference. "I think Sharad Pawar Ji and his daughter Supriya Sule ji need to ask Jitendra Awhad as to who is the real intolerant and what kind of behaviour should be followed in the country," he said. After the acquittal of all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts, Nationalist Congress Party - Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) legislator Awhad had sparked a controversy by claiming that "Sanatan Dharma's ideology is perverted and it has ruined the country".

NCP-SP leader says Sanatan Dharma, Hinduism not same; BJP leaders react
Jitendra Awhad, MLA from the Nationalist Congress Party–SP (NCP-SP), has courted controversy after making remarks criticising 'so-called Sanatan Dharma', arguing that Hinduism is different from it. NCP-SP MLA Jitendra Awhad said concept of Sanatan Dharma behind oppression of anti-caste activists, social reformers such as BR Ambedkar.(PTI File) ANI reported that Awhad was talking to reporters when he said, 'There was never any religion called Sanatan Dharma. We are followers of Hindu Dharma.' He said the concept of Sanatan Dharma was behind the oppression of anti-caste activists, social reformers, and other leaders: 'It did not even allow Dr BR Ambedkar to drink water or attend school.' He also said, 'It was this so-called Sanatan Dharma that denied our Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj his coronation. This Sanatan Dharma defamed our Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The followers of this Sanatan Dharma tried to assassinate Jyotirao Phule.' It was Ambedkar who "rose against Sanatan Dharma, burned the Manusmriti, and rejected its oppressive traditions', he added. Leaders of the ruling BJP reacted angrily. Party leader Ram Kadam said, 'The statement by the leader of Sharad Pawar's faction is based on an incomplete study of the scriptures… Will they now do this for politics… defame Sanatan Dharma?' He accused Awhad of making the statements for "politics of appeasement'.
