Representative image The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) recently issued an order banning the sale of meat on Independence Day, August 15. This decision has led to strong reactions from political leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT), who called the ban an infringement on people's freedom to choose their food.
According to the KDMC, all slaughterhouses and licensed butcher shops selling goat, sheep, chicken, and other large animals must remain closed for 24 hours, from midnight on August 14 to midnight on August 15. The civic body has warned that anyone found slaughtering animals or selling meat during this period will face legal action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act of 1949.
KDMC Deputy Commissioner for Licences, Kanchan Gaikwad, told news agency PTI that this order is not new. In fact, it has been issued every year since 1988 as part of a civic resolution. Gaikwad, who signed the latest order, said the ban is meant to maintain public order and to observe important national occasions respectfully.However, opposition leaders do not agree with this view.Jitendra Awhad, NCP-SP MLA from the Kalwa-Mumbai constituency in Thane district, criticised the order strongly. He said he plans to host a mutton party on Independence Day to highlight what he called the 'freedom' to eat what one wants. 'On the day we got freedom, you are taking away our freedom to eat what we want,' Awhad told PTI.
Earlier the same day, Awhad also posted on X (formerly Twitter), 'This is too much. Who are you to decide what people will eat and when?'Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray also condemned the KDMC's order. He demanded the suspension of the KDMC commissioner, accusing the official of trying to control people's food choices. 'Who is the commissioner to tell people whether they can eat non-vegetarian food or not?' he asked.Suresh Mhatre, Bhiwandi MP and NCP-SP leader, joined the criticism. He called the ban an infringement on people's traditional food habits. Mhatre said that what people eat depends on their customs and culture. He gave the example of local fishing communities who consume both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. 'Food habits are shaped by customs prevalent in different parts of the state. The ban on meat sale is incomprehensible,' he told reporters.Mhatre emphasised that dietary preferences are closely linked to cultural identity, especially in coastal communities like the Agri Koli. He urged civic authorities to respect these traditions instead of imposing restrictions.On the other side, Kalyan (West) MLA Vishwanath Bhoir from Shiv Sena defended the KDMC's decision. He said the ban is not being opposed by most people and asked why it should be a problem to avoid meat for one day. 'People are not opposing the notice. What's the issue if one doesn't eat meat for one day? The Opposition only knows how to criticise,' he said.The KDMC's annual meat sale ban on Independence Day is meant to honour the national holiday with peaceful observance and public order. Still, it has become a matter of heated debate over personal freedom and cultural respect.While the civic body insists on the importance of the ban, political leaders and many residents see it as an unnecessary interference in their food choices and cultural traditions.

Pooja Pal Meets Yogi Adityanath Days After Being Ousted From Samajwadi Party
Expelled Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Pooja Pal on Saturday met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at his official residence in Lucknow. The meeting comes after Pal was expelled from the Samajwadi Party by Chief Akhilesh Yadav for praising CM Yogi Adityanath during the UP Assembly session. Samajwadi Party expelled her from the party, citing anti-party activities and indiscipline. "You have carried out anti-party activities, and even after being warned, you did not stop these activities, due to which the party has suffered a lot. The work done by you is anti-party and a serious act of indiscipline. Hence, you are expelled from Samajwadi Party with immediate effect," read the letter of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav addressed to Pooja Pal. Earlier, while speaking in the UP Assembly, Pooja Pal, whose husband Raju Pal was shot dead by Atiq Ahmed and his associate, thanked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the zero-tolerance policy against crime that improved law and order in the state. The SP MLA said that the UP CM gave her justice by bringing in policies like zero tolerance that led to the killing of criminals like Atiq Ahmed. Speaking at the Assembly's 24-hour marathon discussion on 'Vision Document 2047,' Pooja Pal said, "Everyone knows who murdered my husband (Raju Pal). I want to thank the Chief Minister for bringing me justice and hearing me when nobody else did. The CM gave justice to many other women like me in Prayagraj by bringing in policies like zero tolerance that led to the killing of criminals like Atiq Ahmed. Today, the entire state looks at the CM with trust," she said. Praising CM Yogi, she said, "Mere pati ke hatyare Atiq Ahmed ko Mukhya Mantri ne mitti mein milaane ka kaam kiya' (The Chief Minister has buried my husband's murderer Atiq Ahmed." She further said," I raised my voice when I saw that no one wanted to fight against criminals like Atiq Ahmed. When I started getting exhausted with this fight, CM Yogi Adityanath gave me justice." BSP MLA Raju Pal was shot dead in Prayagraj in 2005, days after his wedding with Pooja Pal. In February 2023, Umesh Pal, a key witness to the murder, was shot dead in Prayagraj's Sulem Saray area. The expulsion of Pooja Pal for alleged anti-party activities and indiscipline drew sharp criticism from several Uttar Pradesh ministers, who accused the party of being intolerant of differing views and disrespectful towards women.

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader BK Hariprasad's "Indian Taliban" remark for BJP's ideological parent, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has drawn a sharp response from the ruling party. The BJP has said that the Congress abuses every nationalist organisation and loves banned radical outfits such as PFI and SIMI. Speaking to news agency ANI, Mr Hariprasad, former MP and currently a member of the Karnataka legislative council, criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising the RSS in his Independence Day address. "They (RSS) are trying to disturb peace in the country. I will only equate RSS with Taliban, they are Indian Taliban and the Prime Minister is appreciating them from Red Fort," he said. "Did any 'Sanghi' participate in the freedom struggle? It's a shame that RSS is not a registered organisation. We don't know where they get funds. Any NGO that wants to work in the country should register, as per the Constitution," the former Rajya Sabha MP said. Mr Hariprasad said the BJP and RSS are "masters of twisting history". "BJP and RSS are the masters of twisting history, and they are trying to rewrite history. It was AK Fazlul Huq (Bengal Prime Minister before Independence) and (Sangh ideologue) Syama Prasad Mookerjee who moved the first resolution in Bengal for the Partition. (Muhammad Ali) Jinnah and (Vinayak) Savarkar were of the opinion that both religions need a separate state. They are trying to blame Congress for it," he said. Delivering his 12th Independence Day address, the Prime Minister on Friday congratulated the RSS for completing 100 years. "Today, I would like to proudly mention that 100 years ago, an organisation was born - Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Hundred years of service to the nation is a proud, golden chapter. With the resolve of 'vyakti nirman se rashtra nirman', with the aim of the welfare of Maa Bharati, swayamsevaks dedicated their lives to the welfare of our motherland... In a way, RSS is the world's biggest NGO. It has a history of 100 years of dedication," Prime Minister Modi said, ahead of the Sangh's centenary celebrations on September 25. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla responded sharply to Mr Hariprasad's remarks and said the Congress sees goons in Indian forces, surrender in Operation Sindoor, Taliban in RSS and considers Pakistan its own. "Insulting the forces, constitutional institutions, social organisations and Sanatan has become Congress's identity. Courts have pulled them up multiple times because of targeting nationalist organisations," he said. "The Congress's mindset is Taliban. Why did Mahatma Gandhi and Jayaprakash Narayan praise RSS? Why did (former President and Congress veteran) late Pranab Mukherjee visit the RSS headquarters?"
