Can adults make new brain cells? New study may finally settle one of neuroscience's greatest debates
Researchers say they have found clear evidence that the human brain can keep making new neurons well into adulthood, potentially settling decades of controversy.
This new neuron growth, or "neurogenesis," takes place in the hippocampus, a critical part of the brain involved in learning, memory and emotions.
"In short, our work puts to rest the long-standing debate about whether adult human brains can grow new neurons," co-lead study author Marta Paterlini, a researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, told Live Science in an email.
Other experts agree that the work makes a strong case for adult neurogenesis.
While a single study does not constitute absolute proof, "this is strong evidence in support of the idea" that stem cells and precursors to new neurons exist and are proliferating in the adult human brain, said Dr. Rajiv Ratan, CEO of the Burke Neurological Institute at Weill Cornell Medicine, who was not involved in the study.
"This is a perfect example of great science teeing up the ball for the clinical neuroscience community," he told Live Science.

The researchers combined advanced techniques, including single-nucleus RNA sequencing and machine learning, to sort and examine brain tissue samples from international biobanks, they reported in a paper published July 3 in the journal Science. RNA, a cousin of DNA, reflects genes that are "switched on" inside cells, while machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence often used to crunch huge datasets.
Since the 1960s, researchers have known that mice, rats and some nonhuman primates make new brain cells in the dentate gyrus, part of the hippocampus, throughout life. But getting quality brain tissue samples from adult humans is extremely challenging.
"Human tissue comes from autopsies or surgeries, so how it's handled — how long before it's fixed in preservative, which chemicals are used, how thin the slices are — can hide those newborn cells," Paterlini said. Employing new technologies enabled the team to overcome this challenge.
They analyzed more than 400,000 individual nuclei of hippocampus cells from 24 people, and in addition, looked at 10 other brains using other techniques. The brains came from people ages 0 to 78, including six children and four teens.
Using two cutting-edge imaging methods, the team mapped where new cells sat in the tissue. They saw groups of dividing precursor cells sitting right next to the fully formed neurons, in the same spots where animal studies have shown that adult stem cells reside.
"We didn't just see these dividing precursor cells in babies and young kids — we also found them in teenagers and adults," Paterlini said. "These include stem cells that can renew themselves and give rise to other brain cells."
The newer technologies enabled the researchers to detect the new brain cells at various stages of development and conduct research that wouldn't have been possible a few years ago, Ratan added.
The team also used fluorescent tags to mark the proliferating cells. This enabled them to build a machine learning algorithm that identified the cells that they knew would turn into neurogenic stem cells, based on past rodent studies. This was a "clever approach" for tackling the challenges of studying brain-cell formation in adolescents and adults, Ratan said.
As expected, the brains of children produced more new brain cells than the brains of adolescents or adults did. Meanwhile, nine out of 14 adult brains analyzed with one technique showed signs of neurogenesis, while 10 out of 10 adult brains analyzed with a second technique bore new cells. Regarding the few brains with no new cells, Paterlini said it's too soon to draw conclusions about the disparity between adult brains with evidence of new cells and those without.

Next, the researchers could explore whether the adults who produced new brain cells did so in response to a neurological disease, such as Alzheimer's, or whether adult neurogenesis is a sign of good brain health, said Dr. W. Taylor Kimberly, chief of neurocritical care at Massachusetts General Brigham, who was not involved in the study.
"They were able to find these needles in a haystack," Kimberly told Live Science. "Once you detect them and learn about them and understand their regulation," scientists can research how to track the precursor cells through time and see how their presence relates to disease, he said.
He envisioned comparing patients who have dementia to "super agers" who are cognitively resilient in old age. If the link between neurogenesis and disease can be uncovered, perhaps that could open the door to treatments.
"Although the precise therapeutic strategies in humans are still under active research," Paterlini said, "the very fact that our adult brains can sprout new neurons transforms how we think about lifelong learning, recovery from injury and the untapped potential of neural plasticity."

Met urged to scrap Carnival facial recognition plan
Civil liberty and anti-racism groups have called on the Metropolitan Police to drop plans to use live facial recognition (LFR) technology at this year's Notting Hill Carnival. In a letter to Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, 11 organisations described LFR as "a mass surveillance tool that treats all Carnival-goers as potential suspects and has no place at one of London's biggest cultural celebrations". They said the decision to reintroduce the technology at Carnival was "deeply disappointing" and argued it could be "less accurate for women and people of colour". The Met Police says LFR is accurate and balanced across ethnicity and gender, and insists it will help keep people safe. The groups - which include Liberty, Big Brother Watch and the Runnymede Trust - highlighted an ongoing judicial review brought by Shaun Thompson, a black Londoner who says he was wrongly identified by the system and detained. The letter states: "There is no clear legal basis for your force's use of LFR. No law mentions facial recognition technology and Parliament has never considered or scrutinised its use. "Notting Hill Carnival is an event that specifically celebrates the British African Caribbean community, yet the [Metropolitan Police] is choosing to use a technology with a well-documented history of inaccurate outcomes and racial bias." The letter also raised concerns over a 2023 National Physical Laboratory study, which found the NeoFace system used by the Met was less accurate for women and people of colour depending on the algorithm that has been set. The study's authors found the system could show bias at lower thresholds, though at the higher settings the Met says it uses, performance was found to be equitable across ethnicity and gender. These thresholds are confidence levels the system uses to decide a match - lower ones flag more people but risk more mistakes and bias, while higher ones are stricter and more balanced. Campaigners said there was no legal obligation for the force to avoid the lower thresholds, and argued policing resources would be better spent on safety measures at the carnival. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Ward, who is leading this year's policing operation at the carnival, said LFR had led to more than 1,000 arrests since the start of 2024 and that independent testing showed the system was "accurate and balanced with regard to ethnicity and gender" at the thresholds used by the Met. Notting Hill Carnival takes place next weekend and has previously attracted up to two million people. It has come under increased scrutiny after two people were murdered at last year's event. Pump the Brakes on E-Bikes
I applaud the efforts in New York City to adopt an e-bike speed limit of 15 miles per hour, paralleling safety actions abroad ('New York Has a New E-Bike Speed Limit—and Can't Enforce It,' Page One, Aug. 8). Scientific literature from Europe, Asia and the Middle East documents the severe neurosurgical, orthopedic, maxillofacial and other traumatic injuries associated with the higher rate of speed for e-bikes compared to traditional pedal bicycles. The U.S. should learn from this experience and spare the public repeated tragedies. New York can continue to lead the way by implementing new requirements for licensure and registration for those e-bikes that travel at higher speeds more closely resembling mopeds and motorcycles. This will enable law enforcement to identify these vehicles in traffic flow and restrict their use to the roadway instead of bike lanes and sidewalks, where they are more likely to collide with pedestrians in densely populated areas.

1 Stock Down 40% This Year to Buy and Hold
Key Points Novo Nordisk's shares have been trending downward due to clinical setbacks and underwhelming results. However, the company has some potential catalysts on the way that could jolt its stock price. Novo Nordisk looks attractive given its lineup and pipeline, especially at current levels. 10 stocks we like better than Novo Nordisk › Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) first earned U.S. approval for its now-famous weight management medicine Wegovy in June 2021. That marked the beginning of a strong run for the company on the stock market. However, the Denmark-based drugmaker has given up most of these gains over the past year; the stock is down by 40% since January alone. Despite its recent misfortunes, Novo Nordisk's shares could still deliver strong returns to patient investors. Here's why. The weight management opportunity Novo Nordisk primarily develops medicines for diabetes and, in recent years, weight management. Its stock has plunged over the past year because its financial results haven't been as impressive as the market had hoped. It also faced some clinical setbacks, while its biggest rival in its core markets, Eli Lilly, earned some important wins. However, there's more to the story. The market for anti-obesity medications could grow at an incredibly rapid rate. Some analysts estimate that it will be worth $150 billion by 2035, compared to $15 billion last year. Novo Nordisk still has one of the deepest pipelines in the industry. In fact, it's challenging to find a company other than Eli Lilly that has more promising products. Recently, Novo Nordisk expanded its pipeline through various licensing deals. Here's one more thing that recently broke its way: Eli Lilly's oral GLP-1 candidate, orforglipron, did not perform nearly as well as expected in a phase 3 study. This opens the door for Novo Nordisk to catch up to its longtime rival. The company's oral version of Wegovy is currently awaiting approval from regulators in the U.S. The oral version led to an average weight reduction of 13.6% in a phase 3 clinical trial, slightly higher than the 12.4% that orforglipron recently posted in its late-stage study. While it's always hard to compare across clinical trials, the data at the very least suggests that oral Wegovy is comparable to orforglipron -- but only the former drug is closing in on approval. Novo Nordisk also has yet another promising anti-obesity candidate in phase 3 studies, amycretin, which the Denmark-based pharmaceutical giant is testing in both subcutaneous and oral formulations. Why is the race to develop an oral weight loss option so important? Pills are easier and cheaper to manufacture, store, and transport. So, compared to injectable weight loss therapies, oral versions would allow drugmakers to produce them more cost-effectively and to expand the reach of weight loss therapies. On top of that, some patients are strongly averse to needles. Because the current leading weight management drugs are administered subcutaneously, an oral option would likely take a decent share of the market. Novo Nordisk is likely to be first to market. And the company could follow up that win with another oral product in amycretin. The price is right Let's go back to Novo Nordisk's recent and disappointing financial results. In the first half of the year, revenue rose by 16% year over year to 154.9 billion Danish kroner ($24.2 billion), while net profit came in at 55.5 billion DKK ($8.7 billion). Perhaps that's not quite what the market expected to see, but these are still excellent results for a pharmaceutical giant -- most drugmakers of that size would be happy to grow their revenue at high-single-digit or low-double-digit rates. Meanwhile, the stock appears reasonably valued, trading at 13 times forward earnings, compared to the healthcare industry's average of 16.2. What's the verdict? Novo Nordisk looks attractive at current levels, given the company's strong pipeline in weight management and a lineup that continues to deliver consistent profits.
