The Hong Kong Rope Skipping Association, China said on Monday it has strictly followed the guidelines, after reports suggested the SAR regional flag shown at the medal ceremonies of the World Jump Rope Championships in Japan differed from the official design.
The rope skipping association said the correct version of the SAR regional flag was given to the organisers earlier.
More than 2,600 athletes from 34 countries and regions took part in the tournament recently held in Kawasaki, with representatives from Hong Kong, China winning a number of medals.
The Hong Kong Rope Skipping Association, China said it has all along followed strictly the guidelines provided by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department on the use of the regional flag and the national anthem when participating in overseas tournaments.
The body added it had followed established procedures for the world championships in Japan by, for example, providing organisers with a file of the correct regional flag that was downloaded from the official government website.
The Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, for its part, said it contacted the rope skipping association to learn about the case.
The bureau also reminded sports organisations that the regional flag displayed at competitions must match the format and specifications stated on the government's webpage, and that they should reference guidelines issued by the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China.

Top fencers to duel at Palace Museum

Top fencers to duel at Palace Museum Activities promoting the National Games are to highlight crossovers between culture and sport. Photo: RTHK Top fencers from Hong Kong and the world will face off at the Hong Kong Palace Museum later this month as part of a series of activities to encourage the public to learn more about the upcoming National Games and cheer on athletes. The exhibition will feature Olympic gold medallist Edgar Cheung of Hong Kong, China taking on France's world champion Enzo Lefort – a rematch of their Paris Olympics quarter-final. Asian Games bronze medallist Lam Hin-chung from the SAR will fence China's Olympic gold medallist Zhong Man in sabre. Lam said it is meaningful to bring the sport to an iconic cultural landmark for the first time, mirroring the Grand Palais in France, home of fencing at last year's Olympics. "It means a lot to me because last year when I was at the Paris Olympics, we were there, and [Edgar Cheung and Vivian Kong] got a gold medal in such a great place there," Lam said. "And we were talking about like, 'oh, why don't we do it in Hong Kong?' The Palace Museum, it means Chinese culture in Hong Kong, and I think it's similar like the [Grand] Palais in Paris. So that's why we try to make it happen." Local rising athlete Hailin Chen, who will face fellow fencer Vivienne Lee, said she hopes to inspire youngsters through the exhibition match. "Showcasing fencing in this grand venue can inspire younger fencers as well as just promoting the sport of fencing and inspiring younger kids to know the sport and also continue to play the sport that they like," Chen said. "I think it's crazy that they're able to fit a fencing piece there and for us to perform, and I'm just really excited to just be there and enjoy the game." The matches will be broadcast live on RTHK TV 32 and on a channel in France on August 26. Local artist Elaine Chiu also created paintings to commemorate the Games, one of which will be revealed at the Palace Museum on the night of the matches. Event organiser and GDCD Association Limited chairman Vincent Cheng said the Games is an opportunity for crossovers between culture and sport. "We hope that this event can let more people know that we can promote sports from culture and we can also promote culture in sports, so it's both ways. Hopefully we can have more crossover coming up in the future as well," said Cheng, who's also a DAB lawmaker. Leading up to the National Games, GDCD Association Limited will host several community events around the Yau Tsim Mong district. Residents can participate in interactive booths and athlete sharings to learn more about the spirit of the Games.

National Games bowling to strike home in HK

National Games bowling to strike home in HK The chairwoman of the Hong Kong, China Tenpin Bowling Congress said on Tuesday that Hong Kong's staging of the mass-participation sport at the upcoming 15th National Games will spark interest. Bowling is the only mass-participation sport of the nine to be staged in the SAR during the Games that it will co-host with Guangdong and Macau. The finals for the sport will be staged at the Kai Tak Sports Park Bowling Centre between August 22 and 24 ahead of the Games to be held in November. Speaking on an RTHK radio programme, Vivien Lau said local bowlers rarely get to play against representatives from the provinces and other special administrative regions. "When we hold local competitions, bowlers have to be members of our congress," she said. "But now all who are interested can form groups to join the event. "This will definitely enhance public understanding of as well as interest in bowling. "In particular, this event is a nationwide competition, so for the spectators, it's a very special competition." Even though SAR bowlers enjoy home advantage in the Games, Lau said the style of releasing the ball will be one of the challenges as most of them are hookers while many of their mainland counterparts are spinners. Lee Wing-yan, a SAR bowler who has retired from the sport for years, said she immediately signed up when she found out that Hong Kong is hosting the mass participation event. "It is the first time that the National Games has the bowling mass participation event, and it's held in Hong Kong," she said. "So I and my teammates thought that given this rare opportunity, as we do not know if bowling will still be part of the National Games in the future, we hope to seize this opportunity to join the mega event," she told the same show.
